The ‘tears’ EP Is A Perfect Starting Point For Getting Into Boris

While all artists stopped touring and record labels started rescheduling their release dates, Boris have chosen another path to follow.

Despair and depression. Happiness and sadness. At the beginning of lockdown, many theaters and clubs were forced to close, and it was a similar situation for recording studios. Now, to protect the music and culture that are about to be killed, and to connect to the future, there was no time to hesitate. Making this album became therapy for ourselves too. You could say that this helped stabilize our minds. How different is it usually from your typical inspiration — does it usually come from your mood, a certain idea or musical structures you want to explore?

Takeshi and Atsuo were both influenced by punk, hardcore music as teens. The ex-bassist GUY came to see our Hiroshima show, and he gave us approval to play the cover. It seems to me that each track of it is a different record in its own.

How did you approach your work? Surely, the texture on the outside will look different compared to albums. The simple rule setting I mentioned earlier has a great influence on our musical composition. We poured in the same level of density as before, into the composition of the simple and short song structures.

As well as different chaotic elements. Songs that are easy to understand and are enjoyable can reach the everyday lives of the listener. However, at the same time, we also need to deliver work that includes feelings that only we understand, or the artistic expression would be meaningless. I think conflicting elements must always be equipped in a single piece of work. We began recording on March 24th. Due to the influence of the coronavirus, there was nothing we could do besides constantly making songs and recording, but I think it was also a period where we could apply a methodology for after the coronavirus.

In what way are your approaches to writing material different now? From the point of our formation to today, our method for making songs through jam sessions has not changed. In the process, the beauty of the sound form is explored. On October 13th, , there was a co-performance planned with Z. The show was postponed to March 8th, , due to a huge typhoon throughout Japan. Due to the coronavirus and with live venues closed, even this show was postponed.

Because of this, we ended up selling the CD by mail order only. A has a long active history, and Atsuo has professed their influence on him. How important is this punk-component for your creativity — musically and esthetically? The songs completed from jam sessions and their relationship, in addition to how the album will turn out, will become clearer little by little in the process towards completion.

The important thing is to first deny your own unconscious, habits, and ego, and make that the starting point. What was so particular about this album? The noise constantly appears in front of us then disappears, and helps us awaken our perception.

Even in a world with coronavirus where it felt like our hearts were being torn, our own studio always felt like it was filled with pleasant noise like any other time.

While looking back, do you actually differentiate your creativity according to stages and chapters or it all comes tightly connected to you? I will always feel like a rookie. The skills as a musician don't improve, but maybe because we accumulate experience as a painter?

In the music industry, I always feel like a newcomer. What drove you to the direction of collaborative work? We pay tribute to each other, we respect each other, we erase all ego as individuals, and create completely new music. And how different was it in terms of playing live? Obviously, in such a case someone brings his or her influences and energies. When we co-perform a Boris song with a collaborator, the same song emerges with an expression completely different than before - not only just what we hear, but the characters and colors the songs hold change dramatically.

The new phenomenon that occurs on stage will be a thrilling experience for the audience as well. While working with noise and quite specific musical structures, what do you feel creating music that sometimes gets to an edge of chaos? Leave your emotions and react by throwing your body into chaos.

Is the elation coming from beauty? Take the feelings that have not yet become emotions, before they become emotions, and translate them into music.

We will keep producing work, and hope that we can share the pleasure gained with people in this world. In order to keep expanding the possibilities of the world and human perceptions as well. But oh dear if you dare make EBM! These are our roots too, so it was a pleasure being able to share time with them.

Riffs are born and the beats keep accelerating faster than our minds can think. What helps you to find your path with each record? X LUCY. And this is a scam.

News: Boris Announce Release of Six Volume “Archive” Series

If playing loud was the goal, these guys hit it. Their metal was new to Japan then, a country exploring heaviness through hardcore punk and psychedelia despite strict drug laws and Boris largely went under the radar. It would take 10 years and 10 albums later before Boris released Pink— their genre-destroying masterpiece of thrash, hardcore, shoegaze, metal and ambient zen—when the world was finally ready for them in With Pink , Boris found themselves at a sonic crossroads, and their penchant to crush genres and labels has only grown more potent since. But after all that, we got and have been reflective…after Pink , we wanted to wipe the slate clean and start anew, but there is a limit to how much skin you can shed.

Tokyo band “Boris” draw fan reverence during 25th anniv tour stop, NYC

Yet despite frequent visits to America by the band, discussion, online and off, about their nearly sold-out show in New York this month, was heated. Film director Tetsuya Nakashima is renowned for his choice of alternative music from the underground that goes side by side with the grotesque and bizarre scenes in his work. Of course, Boris are more than just two dimensions, having shifted among all kinds of possibilities in each one of their past albums. Also, it is a habit of the band to play albums in their entirety, tracks in the same order, while on tour in order to give audiences a fresh and vivid sense of the current spiritual and musical state they occupy. Their new drone metal album "Dear" came out in July to wide critical acclaim, and the performance was far beyond any cheap words. The group may have looked slender and quiet, but their creation of heavy sound waves which bounced around the crowd was no joke. With their fuzzy guitar and vigorous beats, they were able to create an almost imaginary transparent jar in the venue space that held all the psychedelic thoughts and sounds within touch. Instead of supplying music alone, the trio were actually handing out their aesthetics, an effect achieved by switching pedals and layering feedback.

Some bands are fly-by-night operations, garnering instant fame, critical acclaim and shattering all album sales expectations within their first couple years of operation. Boris is certainly not one of those spontaneous success stories. Each current member had been playing in other acts, and Boris was assembled as a way to have the members interact together in a band atmosphere with their former drummer. With influences including the Melvins and Earth to use as sonic templates, the foundation was set for Boris to flourish in the artistry it so immersed itself — and consequently gain the respect from like-minded audiences. In , Boris released its first full-length, Absolutego, which would quickly lead to a slew of album releases, including collaborations with Japanese experimentalists Merzbow and American-based drone metal guitar duo Sunn O. Releasing albums with a surprising consistency and frequency would be immensely advantageous to Boris in a variety of ways.

Just when you thought Boris was done giving this year they surprise you again! Starting today, Boris will begin making their past limited releases available for sale on Bandcamp through a series they are calling Archive.

And yet Boris, hitting The Bunkhouse Saloon on Thursday, remains one of the greatest bands that you might never have heard of. The one common denominator: They keep it heavy They do take their name from a Melvins tune, after all. Boris is an intensely prolific bunch, having put out 23 studio albums on their own as well as numerous records with other artists.
