Who has time to suffer through all the looting necessary to find a particularly elusive book? This probably was proposed but I didn't see it in a search. How about adding all the books to the skills list so we can choose to either hunt for a book and save points for skills or buy the book and lose points we could have used for skills?
Might lower frustration when you feel really stuck. Also similiar type mechanics for unlocking tech tree are present in most games out there reaching from rpg, shooters, platforms, arcade games ,strategic games and so on and usually follow similiar path some of which has huge player base and make ungodly amount of cash in the process - get this item in this quantity usually parts of BP or such similiar research material - get skill points - and either find someone to put all the pieces of info togheter or do it yourself in time, and if you meet prequisites and by spending skill points or similiar equivalent aka exp this gives the player the choice to go for whatever particular thing he needs and provides great flexibility - compared to that RNG based schematics are like comparing Sci-fi future to stone age.

I also agree that if NPCs or some other unknown features are added, like quests, then this issue might be better solved there. But, I'm not sure -- as usual -- what is a feature or not in this game. Another is to up the loot percentage that is books. Another is to have specific books in logical locales, or a higher likelihood of such.
A gas station with a garage and lift might be likely to have a book on car repair or the like. Then again so might a public library or some rich house with a chaffeur's residence. Unfortunately, I'm not sure which building represents what in this game. Again, you could simply have options. If you could control the type of game you could choose to play, you might be able to adjust the likelihood of finding books, or books you need, or fixed locations for books, or use skill points for missing books, etc.
Even games in which you know you CAN'T find a certain book, just for bragging rights and trying new game play might be interesting. Every time they make a new build, it feels pretty close to as random as a new loot list. That is to say, some game changes seem totally out of the progress before. Not sure if that is intended either. It may sound like I'm being very negative.
I'm not. I just don't know where this game is going based upon its past. I dunno. I dunno what an NPC means in this game, it has never been completely delineated in the description or the Steam forums, that's enough reading for me.
Does seem like it. That suggests that using Skill Points to get the needed book is unlikely. No, wait that suggests that using Skill Points, at a high cost, to get the beginning of that Skill Tree would be an intended fix. No, yes, um, depends on the game, or the options, or what's in the mind of the devs from day to day.
I'm confused. Never seems to quite pan out though to us waiting here. It looks more like random changes sometimes, like on the 7 Day Horde mechanics, etc. I sometimes think that the game's ability to be interpreted as someone's variant dreams, allows it to seem to be something other than what will be the finished truth. That's a worry, but it also suggests the current game may benefit from being somewhat amorphous and able to be molded into what a person wants or dreams it to be.
The min-maxers tend to be those who also like the hardcore find it or not mechanics. So, as long as they have more skill points available than you do, and those extra skill points matter enough, they will be still proud to have found that Leather Tanning book when you did not and wasted Skill Points on it. In Single-Player, I would think game options are a good way to go. Just have these input into your Score Scaling. That way bragging rights are retained.
Multi-player, you can just have the server settings decide all that, or votes by the participants, requiring people to adapt as needed or the server to adapt as needed. It's not a bad idea to use Skill Points for book purchases. But without some more context and some sort of penalty to it, it would seem that such easy purchase would bypass a large part of the previous type of gameplay, which was explore and suffer -- er, survive -- until then.
I think the more it tries to harden into one vision, the more it loses a lot of players who currently like it. The game builds do not really point in any one clear direction, often changing direction on a dime -- such as with the current omission of gore blocks. I really think that having a choice of game styles, perhaps even having Game Style Templates to choose from, created by the Devs as a template, might really help players out here in seeing what is proposed for the future.
But in any one given gameplay type, they are not the best at what they do, IMHO. Therefore, I think they should keep flexibility and options, thus keeping the edge they do have, a game that can be played many ways and still be enjoyed.
The fact that every player thinks his way is the right way is the beauty of it. But it is more likely the player's immersion in his experience than a definitive fact that such gameplay is intended or will survive Development. This is why, soon, Dev Input must begin to make clear what will be available down the road. Oh, and for the love of Pete, how about smacking displaying in big neon lights that big decision on the Steam forums clearly, when you do make it -- so that it is clearly highlighted at the place where you actually make the core of your money.

Solo play is very tiresome when searching for stuff and then trying to build your fortress up to defend against the horde. Creative mode is a god send Also ive mentioned it before - i do not want to see the books removed from the game - it would be nice if you remember take notice of that or do you have cognitive problems with comprehension?
Introducing proper tech tree with using the skill point system would be a great step forward in the right direction - this is a simple fact - if you choose to ignore it or feel diferently - yup you've guess it - its your perogative. Pure RNG mechanics were ok and sufficient in the very first stages of the game aproximately up to A5-A8 after those RNG mechanics became insuficcient and more of a nuisance and negative than positive influence on the game - the makeshift attempt via introducing books and later even adding schematics in huge numbers in the following A versions in order to restrict tech progress made this even more visible and to some ppl including the devs insufficient to be meant as primary way of governing tech tree the removal of certain books aka forge book and constant tweaking in the drop tables for books are prime example of this and this is also indisuputable fact- which ofc you might choose to ignore yet again.
In earlier posts you asked what modding has to do with RNG? So why are you forcing in something that barely makes sense? To make something else you are forcing in make more sense. You really dont see this pattern do you? Again being a modder has nothing to do with it, I have modded since doom and have looked through this game's files But you arent doing that, you are clearly using bad mechanics and creating balance problems to solve a RNG issue Its staggering your first thought isnt to simply address the RNG issue by removing the extremes or in other words the entire problem.
How about You can just make everything so long as you have the material, tools and a copy of that item to break down? Find Iron Boots, you can craft Iron boots So you can do it without the book, but its grindy and you start terrible, also there is a chance to fail the item and loose the materials That took me 8 mins to come up with and write.
You really have nothing but go against their core systems, designs and just auto give me it if I havent found it in x amount of time by buying it with randomly earned skill points and create a new balance issue with the same material you make ammo from?
Again with the magic books? Find 10 different pieces of 10 different magazines, posters, books, newspaper articles all found randomly in the trash or for whatever reason shredded and hidden like Easter eggs?
