The Powered Partners not only fill the room with sound but also upgrade a personal portable or stereo TV to component loudspeaker-quality sound. Creative styling also sets the Partners apart. Their triangular shape allows them to nestle comfortably into a corner, which considerably boosts bass response.
A cylindrical hole in the rear corner of the triangle facilitates mounting on a tube or pipe. Optional wall- and stand-mounting brackets make use of this feature. In all fairness, AR benefits from being able to specially match the internal amplifiers to the speakers, while most other manufacturers must make their small speakers work with whatever amplifier you connect.
Bass, you want bass? Position the Powered Partners in a corner, turn the bass control up midway and connect a portable CD player, such as the Sony D, playing a good quality disc. While you can plug the AC cord from one speaker into the AC outlet on the other speaker, you still must turn each on and off independently. Each speaker also needs to be separately supplied with audio. By comparison, only one of the Bose Roommates needs to be plugged in for power, and it receives both channels of the stereo audio, since it contains both amplifiers. Then a simple speaker cable supplies sound to the second speaker.
The Bose arrangement makes for both easier portability and permanent installation. The biggest liability of the AR design results from its profusion of wires. Surely somewhere in Massachusetts, where AR manufactures speakers, there must be a justice of the peace who doubles as an engineer. Maybe he or she could join the AR Powered Partners in wedlock and dispense with all that extra wiring. At the moment, AR sells the speakers only as a pair.
