Loudspeaker Enclosure Design Guidelines
Imagine the sonic possibilities. From spoken announcements to music, our loudspeaker options have you covered. Choose from the 5-inch Ashby-5C, or for even deeper low-end and higher output, the 8-inch Ashby-8C.
With this speaker, out of sight is out of mind. Meyer Sound has been pioneering self-powered loudspeakers for professional installations and touring since In the s, sound reinforcement technology was inconsistent science at best, and at worst, led to show-ending failures.
In Meyer founded his own speaker company; early Meyer Sound innovations include the iconic HD-1 self-powered studio monitor launched in Today Meyer Sound offers a full range of self-powered sound reinforcement products. Self-powered loudspeakers offer several advantages over their passive counterparts when it comes to fidelity, reliability, and simplicity.
Ease of deployment: System set-up is so much easier when you have fewer components and fewer cables to worry about being miswired. And when you consider that the average amp rack weighs nearly pounds and takes up four feet of truck space, the efficiencies get even clearer. Let alone when you want to fly the amplifier racks to get closer to the speakers, often requiring more rigging points and more motors. Predictable, reliable operation: Internal amplification is closely matched to drivers.
Because individual components have been optimized during manufacturing, you can expect consistent sound from show to show. Built-in, factory-optimized protection circuitry provides extra assurance without degrading signal quality.
And, when you have less equipment, you have less risk of failure. Better frequency and phase response: Because self-powered loudspeakers incorporate sophisticated processing, they are calibrated to exhibit optimal response curves in key performance parameters.
Active crossovers are more precise, sophisticated designs, and bi-amped systems are time aligned, eliminating phase issues. The result? Unparalleled clarity: In powered monitors, internal amplifiers are precision-matched to drivers, delivering optimal power at all times for cleaner sound. Tighter transients: Since self-powered loudspeakers have very short internal cables, amps inside can more effectively dampen driver mechanical motion, which leads to better sonic accuracy and tighter, crisper transients.
Certified Safe: Nothing matters more than the safety of your staff and customers. Because self-powered loudspeakers incorporate amplification, they must undergo rigorous testing by Underwriters Laboratories and other international organizations to ensure they operate safely and guard against the risk of fire, electric shock, and inadequate structural design.
What about passive loudspeakers? At first glance, passive systems may seem like a bargain. But we already know that passive systems require more components and accessories than powered systems. Sonically, they exhibit potential for signal loss over distances, and it is very hard to ensure consistent, optimal sound and volume as amplifiers have many variables to consider when being matched to loudspeakers, such as cable lengths and gauge as well as the number of speakers connected to the amplifier.
Passive systems are often touted as easy to service. But because powered loudspeakers are so complex to design and build, self-powered loudspeakers usually represent the top innovations from leading manufacturers. Better quality translates to better reliability, which means fewer maintenance issues in the long run. At face value, passive systems might seem less expensive and easier to maintain. The simplest way to determine the proper woofer and required cabinet alignment is to use computer simulation to model the response of several woofers in different enclosures. For a vented enclosure, it is important to find a driver with a Qts between 0. The figure below shows the system response for a 2. The 2. Although a tuning frequency of 22Hz would have resulted in flatter response, the cabinet design limited the length of the port tube as lower tuning frequencies require longer ports. Note here that the sealed alignment in green would yield a pretty flat in-room response and is probably a better overall choice for many listeners. Most people have heard a woofer or two bottom out and it is important to consider how much abuse a woofer can take before employing it in a design. Below is a graph showing the expected cone excursion with a watt input signal with the vented enclosure in red and the sealed enclosure in green. Note that this power level yields over dB sound pressure level before the driver rolls off for both enclosure types. Clearly, vented enclosures allow significantly more power handling above 20Hz but there is no free lunch here.
DIY Speaker Kits

It was back in that a couple of researchers from General Electric, Chester Rice and Edward Kellogg, patented what remains the basic design for virtually all the world's loudspeakers. In the 84 years since, engineers and enthusiasts have invested a lot of thought and energy in the refinement of Rice and Kellogg's concept, creating a valuable knowledge base for the do-it-yourself crowd. I should know--I recently built the speakers pictured here, and in the process I learned quite a bit about the art and science of a good speaker. At its core a loudspeaker is a surprisingly simple device.

How to Build Your Own Speakers: Step-by-Step DIY Tech
When you build your own DIY Speaker cabinet you have maximum control over the style, design, and structural integrity of the box. But all of their overhead and expenses does nothing to increase the performance of your speakers. Because of this, DIY Speaker cabinet design offers a unique opportunity to significantly increase the performance of your loudspeakers.

Isobaric loudspeaker enclosure configuration refers to systems with two identical transducers operating simultaneously with a common enclosed air adjoining one side of each transducers diaphragm. In the theoretical ideal the air chamber between the drivers should be small enough to virtually be incompressible — the diaphragms would act closely coupled, almost as if coupled together by a lightweight rod. The modeling for a true isobaric design is essentiality identical to that of standard vented box only you would divide in half the Vas of the driver — the isobaric pair is in effect acting as a single motor with twice the magnetic circuit and moving mass. This will in effect make all your speaker enclosures half as big as they would normally be for any particular driver. There are three basic types of isobaric designs:.

We are a small business specialising in DIY home audio speakers, full range speaker kits, speaker cabinet flat packs and custom speaker design. We can supply range of loud speaker kits using these Markaudio point source speaker drivers, along side the other speaker components we retail like Jordan, Cube, Neutrik, Hypex and more traditional multi way speaker kits. We also offer our own line of amplifiers that offer a high performance to cost ratio. As speaker cabinet builders, we are particularly pleased to be able to offer some of the best DIY speakers available, using the best loudspeaker drive units, as an alternative to commercial speakers and electronics that genuinely compete on sound quality at a fraction of the cost, whilst maintaining the manufacture of these products in the United Kingdom wherever possible. Its been 2 years since i started listening to alpair 11ms. Its the most free of compromise full range driver i have ever seen given that you follow a few set of rules.
Home Audio Nirvana. They use voicecoils that are too small and don't join the music from the whizzer cone and main cone seamlessly. Over the years, many customers have sent pictures of their DIY full range speaker projects to us. We'd like to share almost of these with you.
