Red box amplifier
The fifth-generation Red Box features a balanced XLR output at one end and quarter-inch jack sockets marked 'in' and 'thru' at the other. You can feed the 'in' jack with anything you like — your amp's direct out or effects send, or even a preamp pedal or digital guitar amp modeller — and the Red Box will happily apply its speaker and cabinet-simulating EQ curves. The reason most people will buy this box, though, is to add a direct out facility to a traditional valve amp, which offers none of the above frills. In this case, you connect the amp's speaker out to the Red Box's 'in' socket and connect the speaker or speaker cabinet or a dummy load for silent recording to the 'thru' socket, thereby providing the amp with the impedance load that's necessary to prevent damage. Alternatively, you can use a 9V battery, the compartment for which is accessed by unscrewing four thumb screws that hold the light yet sturdy die-cast metal box together.

Hughes&Kettner Black Spirit 200 Floor
Housed in red-anodised aluminium cases with apertures for fixing screws, this range of rack mounting distribution amplifiers have been designed to properly distribute audio signals to varying outputs. A multi-function distribution amplifier offering either six-way stereo, dual six-way mono, or twelve-way mono operation. The front panel has a power indicator, two pre-set input gain controls and a recessed switch to select mono or stereo operation.
There are two inputs using 3-pin XLR connectors, which may be fed with dual mono sources or a single stereo source to feed six outputs. Alternatively, one mono input can be distributed to twelve outputs. All audio connections may be wired balanced, or unbalanced, without loss of level, for use with domestic equipment. Power is connected using an IEC inlet, which has an associated fuse and voltage selector switch.
All connections are on the rear panel. Common-mode rejection: Greater than 66dB. Distortion: 0. Dimensions: 1U rack mounting, mm deep. Weight: 1. UK 13A plug. Optional accessories: RB-RK3 rack kit. Sharing the specifications and accessory set of the RB-DA6 audio distribution amplifier, this uses Neutrik 'Phoenix' style terminal connectors instead of XLR inputs and outputs. The rear is fitted with fourteen 3-pole connectors. Each DA is shipped with the mating connectors so that wires can be simply terminated using a small flat-blade screwdriver.
This variant has the specifications and functionality of the RB-DA6 , however it has twelve separate output gain-adjustment trimmers on the front panel. Accessories as RB-DA6. Again based on the RB-DA6 see above , this design differs in the inputs available and the output connectors.
The two balanced XLR connectors remain as inputs, wired in parallel with a single RJ45 connector carrying the two balanced signals. A push switch on the rear selects between either these balanced connections or a pair of RCA phono sockets, offering unbalanced inputs.
The outputs are available from six RJ45 sockets, each carrying a pair of signals. Input impedance: 10k ohms, unbalanced. This variant is identical to the RB-DA6R with the addition of individual output gain adjustment, instead of global stereo gain adjustment. It has twelve separate output gain-adjustment trimmers on the front panel.
This model has four mono 3-pin XLR inputs, and four groups of five outputs on pin, male D-sub connectors. All inputs and outputs can be wired balanced, or unbalanced, without loss of level, for use with domestic equipment. Each output has a separate buffer amplifier so that loading or a short circuit on one output of a group does not affect the others.
Front panel has four, tri-colour LED audio presence indicators to show the input signals or the level of the output groups, selected by a single switch. A removable panel conceals four gain trimmers for inputs and four for output level. Miniature switches configure the internal routing; each of the four output groups is fed from a mix of the four input signals or a test tone signal.
Specification as RB-DA6 except the following. Power consumption: 9W maximum. Depth: mm. Of the three outputs, the first is a direct link whist outputs 2 and 3 are isolated with optional ground lifts — activated via toggle switches on the front panel.
This is replicated across the four channels. Dimensions WxDxH : x x 42mm. The front has an LED to indicate power. Mounting flanges at each side provide for mounting to flat surfaces or the DA may be rack mounted using optional accessory panels. It accepts input sample rates in the range of 30kHz - kHz, and bit rates of 16, 20 and 24 bits, so can be used for standard CD signal distribution as well as for high quality bit 96kHz work.
Sampling rates include: 32kHz, Weight: 0. Included accessories: Manual, AC power cable. Automatic load-sharing between the two supplies in case of power supply failure.
If both supplies fail the input is connected directly to output 1. Function of each supply is indicated by red LEDs positioned on the front panel. The rear has a 9-pin female D-sub connector which is connected to a changeover relay to indicate the status of each supply.
This is normally closed to indicate power fail and once the supply is working correctly the relay activates to make a normally open contact. Power source: V, 6W maximum. All connections are housed on the rear panel along with IEC power inlet with adjacent fuse holder. The front panel has an input select button, to select the input to be used, and seven indicator LEDS to show the input selected, valid signal presence, or the operational frequency.
Bit depth: Up to and including 24 bits. Sampling: 32, All sample rates in the range of 30kHz - kHz, and word lengths of 16, 20 and bits are accepted. Signal level: 0. Sample frequency range: kHz.
