Audiophiles frown when non-audiophiles scoff at the finer points of the genre. There is one golden rule. Everything makes a difference! Despite what people say, everything makes a difference. It might be subjective, but it makes a difference. Do not listen to people - listen to the music.
It is not tosh. Frankly, such remarks are offensive to those that know better. I presume nonsparky hsan't listened to the item he searched for on ebay - he has just made an assumption that it is rubbish. Remember that pro musicians are pro musicians for a reason - they have good ears and acute perception. A professional musician will be used to certain standards and it is worth trying to find out about them.
The audiophile route may differ from the expectations of a musician. The audiophile route has simplicity as its core value. A musician may prefer toys such an filters, mixers etc. For pure music listening, it's all about the basics. Clean, regulated mains supply.
Even though hifi equipment meets all standards, it is more sensitive than the usual items found in white goods stores. Top end hifi will assume that the mains is regulated and won't include expensive filtering to overcome problems as the filtering will affect the sound.
Thus it will pick up all sorts of clicks, hums and other general interference. We all know that poor contacts cause problems in domestic wiring - imagine the effects on sensitive top end hi-fi. Keep thermostats, dimmers, fluorescents etc. Remember that all cables act to greater or lesser degrees as aerials. A lot of expensive hifi includes options for screening earthing.
Also remember that we lose the upper frequencies as we get older. This is why many older people prefer 'bright' sounding systems. Finally, book a session at your local hi fi dealer. Take one or two CDs which you think have been recorded and produced to a high standard. Set a decent budget so that you get to listen to decent gear. Then sit back and listen. Try to listen to pick out individual sounds. Little to the tone, the timbre, timing, decay, separation etc..
Then listen again with one of the components swapped for something else. Listen to the same as you listened to before and compare. After about an hour, you will be convinced that it all does make a difference.
Once you have acknowledged that, you will understand better the task ahead. As regards to specifics - first determine whether your client wants a top end hi-fi or a mini-studio, or a mixture. There are lots of mains conditioners out there, so when you audition, make sure you include these. Finally, it will all depend on budget as to how far you can take things. I have a friend in Berkshire who recently ploughed a long furrow as regards to mains conditioning - I haven't spoke to him for a while and as tis the season for such things, I'll tap him up and pick his brains for some info.
Firstly, I'm not arguing against the performance of high quality audio equipment - it can and does make a difference, and I own a stereo system which many people would probably consider extravagantly priced, even though it is far from high-end in audiophile terms. And no, I have not "listened" to that power cable, but until I read the results of proper double-blind tests with a statistically significant number of people, or take part in one myself, I am happy to pass judgement on it based on my understanding of science, rather than believe the word of either: a Hi-fi journalists, whose livelihood depends on an environment where new and improved products must always be available b People who've spent hundreds of pounds on a mains cable and are desperate to justify it to themselves.

Two large diameter ferrite noise filters I suppose if you have RFI in the vicinity, and they know what frequencies it is so that they can use the right ferrite components, this might actually work, in the sense of stopping the RFI from entering the equipment power supply.
Whether it works in the sense of improving the sound I don't know - does anybody know how susceptible power supplies are to radio frequency interference on the mains supply? It's all snake-oil, and you know it. As I thought - you haven't listened. Nuff said! Did Stradavari apply 'science' to his selection of tone woods? Did science create Caruso? Did science create the sublime melodies of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony? Or whether they have a particular favourite brand even though the science and technology is almost the same and metal is after all just metal? Perhaps your science can explain to my why two identical, factory produced Fender Stratocasters have different tones and action?
Or why my Silver Series Japanese Fender Telecaster sounds and plays a world better than a mate's expensive USA built model despite costing less than half the price? Or why two guitarists can achieve a different tone despite playing the same gear on a live swap session?
