Sunn amps review
ProSoundWeb Community. Please login or register. Pages: [ 1 ] 2 All Go Down. I have a friend who recently purchased a vintage Sunn 8 channel powered mixer. On the back its marked as Watts, 4 Ohms. I've never heard of a problem running 8 Ohm speakers with a solid state amp rated at 4 Ohms, but considering the vintage nature of this beast I thought I'd check with the vintage guys on this forum before recommending 8 Ohm speakers 4 Ohm are not available locally. My assumption from specs I've read is there may be a power loss at 8Ohm, but the amount appears to be tied in with the amp design and difficult to predict.

Eric Clapton's guitar, amp and equipment set up (historical 1963-2014)
Description This is a late 60s vintage Sunn L tube amp head in extremely clean condition. It has a black amp cover not shown in pictures. Around Sunn was breaking new ground making amps that put out the volume to keep up with guitars and drums in a live setting. The result is a bunch of tube amp heads that start to shake the rafters once Volume gets past about 3. They also happen to be super reliable.

The amp was stock except that the output tubes were replaced with KT66s which have a more refined mid-range and clearer top end than either EL34s or 6L6s. The amp was usually turned up full volume, even in the studio. In Cream, Eric Clapton switched to watt Marshall heads and 4x12 cabinets using two full stacks. He also used a Vox wah-wah pedal and occasionally a fuzz effect pedal. For a while, he used Les Paul guitars exclusively. He had it painted by the artist collective known as "The Fool" - it is as famous for it's paint job as well as for its association with Clapton.
