One hundred and twenty calypsoes to remember

Every year as we move from the summer into the fall, everyone at the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia is buzzing as we approach our annual provincial conference. Usually, the conference would be held in person in Dartmouth. Our provincial conference brings together healthcare professionals from home care, long-term care and acute care, students, researchers, people living with dementia and care partners for a day of learning and sharing the latest in dementia care.

Each of us share a common human experience, but our diverse identities and perspectives shape our journeys along the way. One of those presenters is Heather Cowie, national project manager of a new initiative known as Dementia-Friendly Canada. Other topics include Indigenous perspectives on dementia, the intersection of dementia, caregiving and supporting African Nova Scotians, creating LGBTQ2S-affirming spaces across continuing care, meeting the needs of French Nova Scotians, supporting rare or complex dementias, including persons with dementia in research and committees and more.

If any of these topics pique your interest, please join us for a jam-packed virtual conference on October This year, to honour Dr. John Gray, an advocate for caregiver education, leader in dementia care and one of our founding members, we have set aside a limited number of free spots for caregivers who have been enrolled in one of our programs. Please contact us directly for more information on these spots. She lives in North Sydney and happily spends her day providing resources and support for people on the dementia journey.

A campaign has begun to have a song referred to as the "Yorkshire anthem" to be preserved. It comes amid fears that the popularity of the traditional tune, Ilkla Moor Baht 'at, and its lyrics, are dying out. An MP has tabled a Commons motion calling for colleagues to preserve it. The song tells the story of a man "courting Mary Jane" on the moor who is exposed to the elements without wearing a hat "bhat 'at". It warns of the consequences of being unsuitably dressed in Yorkshire weather and that if he dies, the worms would eat his body, and the ducks would eat the worms. Nearby residents would eat the ducks, and they would, therefore have eaten him "then us'll all ha etten thee". The words are traditionally credited to singers from the Halifax area in the midth Century.

A member of Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, Jeremy first did music studies in Halifax before taking a chance to work in the archives at the Canadian Museum of History, painstakingly transcribing Wolastoq songs from wax cylinders. As he listened to each recording, he felt his own musical impulses stirring from deep within. Long days at the archives turned into long nights at the piano, feeling out melodies and phrases, deep in dialogue with the voices of his ancestors.
