Two D75 amps and a huge old DC, great sounding amps but certainly quite different than the current offerings. I'm not a fan of class D amps I prefer to waste a lot of power and pretend it sounds better which are most or all of the new ones and most modern PA type amps by other makers as well but many people do like to use them on Magnepans and the such.
It is used, a Crown XLI cost about euro with shipping and i don't have a preamp or amplifier with preout but im looking. Al Rogers. Used Adcom gear is one of the best values in vintage hifi. I figured with your question worded the way it was I thought maybe you had some big planar speakers. Why do you think you need a Crown? There are lots of amps that are far below W max rating that would drive these speakers no problem.
My Crown D75 which is only like 30W a side and would do a fine job but so would many other amps that are high quality and conservatively rated. Amp power ratings are all over the place, I would rather have a good W driving a small pair of box speakers than cheap junk that claims W. If you are expecting really high volume you it''s not that you need W but that you simply have the wrong speakers for the job.
Is THIS too expensive? It's a high current amp designed by Nelson Pass. It's an audiophile quality high current design. You can't in most cases change a high wattage amp with lower wattage amp and say that would be good enough or alot better when your actually are looking for more watt. That's like wanting more power from you car and someone say get a lower powered engine or buy a car with less power but generally a better motor.
It's not that i don't wan't good sound i also want power power,watt. I've still got it, and it's still basically mint. Enough clean power to turn HiFi woofers inside-out, but you know it'll never clip! Don't forget the old QSC amps How about a Crown PS It should be more than enough amp for what you are using it for.
I tried one of those and they sound pretty bad. Good for running some floor monitors on a stage though. As somone mentioned in another thread If you want higher levels with low distortion, you need to think bigger.
I want high level with low distortion even at high volume levels, and still have plenty of headroom if needed! Most pro amps built in the last 20yrs will have fans that run constantly and they will be too noisy for home use, one exception to that rule are the Yamaha P series which have thermostat controlled fans that don't run at all under higher impedance loads.
The smallest model in this line the Ps produces more power than you asked for but it won't disappoint in terms of sound quality. There are also loads of old school "big iron" PA amps from pre y2k that don't have fans at all, most of these will be class AB and have more than enough power supply to deliver what it says on the tin, think Peavey CS, old Yamaha P or C series, Crown's, QSC's, and Crest's from the '80s and '90s, Ebay always has some of this stuff only problem is people are starting to get wise to this and the price of these old boat anchors is going up all the time.
