In practice, this only worked once or twice in the weeks I tested it. And, like those two, Google Assistant can also control all other compatible smart devices, including light bulbs, doorbells, robot vacuum cleaners and more.

That's why it's all the more disappointing that the sound quality doesn't really live up to our expectations. It sounds just fine with uncomplicated pop music, but other genres reveal a lack of detail in the treble and mids that make tracks lack sparkle and sound muffled. On the plus side, the Google Nest Audio functions very well as a smart speaker — the assistant voice comes out loud and clear, and it picks up commands very well. It also has some handy features like Google Duo voice calling, which can help you keep in touch with family. As a smart speaker, and as an extra Wi-Fi-connected speaker for the kitchen or another smaller room, the Google Nest Audio can do a pretty good job. However, if sound quality is important to you, it's worth keeping in mind that you don't have to spend very much more to get a speaker that will reward you with a superior listening experience. The Google Nest Audio is available for pre-order now via the Google Store and a range of other retailers, and the release date is set for October 5 October 15 in the UK. The price is slightly lower than the original launch price of the Google Home, but higher than the current price of that speaker if you can still find one for sale.

The Google Nest Audio is a smart speaker that you control with your voice. Via the integrated Google Assistant you turn on music, schedule your calendar appointments, and control your smart home. With multiple Nest Audio speakers or other Google Assistant speakers, you can easily create a multiroom setup. This way, you can listen to your favorite music in different rooms at the same time. Thanks to its relatively good sound quality, the Google Nest Audio is more suitable for larger rooms than other Google Nest speakers.

The design is completely different from the original Google Home. The outside of the Nest Audio is covered in a recycled plastic fabric — the same used on the recent Nest Mini. There is a mute switch for the microphones on the back and a port for the power plug but those are the only visible features. The front has four hidden LEDs that light up when you interact with the speaker, either talking to it or adjusting volume. The top has three touch-sensitive spots.

Since then, the two companies have released countless smart devices, acquired startups and expanded their voice assistants to create the platforms millions of people use today. The Google Home was overdue for an upgrade, and it comes in the form of the new Nest Audio. Sound is improved over the old Home speaker, and the design is updated, yet familiar, in keeping with the newer, fabric-wrapped design of Google's other Nest speakers.

The metal speaker casing with a good-sized woofer and tweeter deliver solid sound at volumes that would suit a small- to medium-sized room. The Nest Audio is available in several colours in other countries, but only Chalk off-white and Charcoal light grey in Australia. If you're the kind of person who enjoys talking to inanimate 'smart' devices, then you probably have one, or several, Google Home speakers.
