Speaker sensitivity is a measure of how efficiently a speaker converts amplifier power to acoustic energy. In other words, it tells us how loud the volume will be for power output from the amplifier. With a speaker, we are talking about the acoustic output, or the volume, resulting from a given amount of power. Measuring the decibel dB output of a speaker when applying 1 watt of power provides the degree of sensitivity. The measurement is taken at 1 meter from the speaker and is usually performed in an anechoic chamber non-reflective, soundproof room.

Generally speaking, yes. I've got a low power vintage Pioneer receiver, the SX, that drives a pair of Klipsch bookshelf speakers quite well. I've also got another low power Cambridge Audio amp that drives a pair of Paradigm bookshelf also admirably. Speaker efficiency seems to have a lot to do with it.

Anyhow one should also keep an eye on the speakers impedance as well just to be better informed. But that said take any speaker specs with a grain of salt,as they can lead one astray. Often having some experience with a given speaker will be more reliable than the printed specs. That's why having a place like this can be such a great resource for any audio fan.

Given that, I would first look for the sound you like then build your system to match. If you like big electrostats, you'll need plus per channel from the amp.

The problem they run into is the laws of logrithmic declines at their limits. But, those last few watts around it's limit it starts to huff and puff and gets distorted. It is perfect for a bedroom where its never called upon to give more than watts. I am in the camp above.. It's better to have too much and not need it than not enough, mostly for a main system where it takes an extra 80 watts to go from 80db to 90db.

Some seem to have the goal of getting by with the least power, and will find speakers that work with that. Others buy hundreds of watts of power, and often never take advantage of it. Another group buys speakers they like and then drive them with a suitable amp. Some have a favorite amp or receiver that they like and find speakers that sound good with it.

All are fine, and none is more valid than another. Personally, I like a little leeway in my setups. By that I mean that I'd not want a super low powered amp that works great with X speaker model but is way underpowered when I want to give Y speakers a try.

I'd say to decide on the speakers and go from there as a good starting point. FWIW, my main speakers are not particularly efficient, are 4 ohms, and really like lots of power. They sound good, though, and I don't think that they'd sound better if they were more efficient. Currently, I have them connected to an amp that's rated at WPC at 4 ohms, and they sound really good.

They didn't sound quite as open with less power, and the sound at higher levels seems much more effortless, if that makes sense. This is in no way a real test, but it's enough for me to decide to use the bigger amp with these speakers. As a plus, any of my other speakers sound great on it, too.
