Speaker wire under wood floor
LOG IN. Hi all…. The Supra cables are currently sitting on the floorboards for their runs from the amp to the ESLs. Am content with the way it all sounds, if not with the way it looks! The floor itself is suspended timber with a joist depth of 6 inches under the floorboards. And over the coming weeks, I will be lifting the boards to fit rockwool sound insulation in the underfloor cavities to reduce the sound levels reaching the room beneath mine.

Thread starter EM3 Start date Jul 19, Joined Sep 7, Likes Location Ok in a few weeks I will be moving to a new home.
I will need to set up the living room theater again. I can't run the wires along the floor due to hardwood flooring and running wire through the attic is a no go. I will need to run the wire under the floor. Any idea what kind of wire I need because there is only a crawl space under the house. I need the wire in white or paintable due to light colored walls. The wire runs will be about 25ft each. I've thought about running it around the top of the walls but thats out.
Any suggestions at all? SilentBob EH??? Jul 19, Joined Apr 1, Likes Their is something called Corner Ducts Which can house your wires and keep them flush with the floor wall or ceiling. More options here that may help you. Jul 20, Joined Apr 2, Likes Are you able to run the wire up into the walls even a little from the crawlspace? If so, I'd get wall plates. Joined Dec 4, Likes I would check your local building code just call and ask , but you probably need "in-wall" rated wire.
Plenum-rated, CL2 or CL3 rated wiring. In-wall rated wiring doesn't emit toxic fumes if it smolders or burns, which could get into your ventilation system. It is often required because it could improve your chances of escaping a fire before being incapacitated or otherwise poisoned by toxic fumes.
You might be able to use standard wiring if you run conduit. If you run a large enough conduit, with large bends, it would aid in the addition or replacement of wiring in the future. No not in wall I thought about in wall but I would have to tear paneling out. I like the idea of the corner ducts. I will let the other half look at that stuff. So would PVC pipe count as conduit? EM3 said:. You wouldn't have to tear paneling down if you can get the wire up into the wall from the crawlspace.
And when I say into the wall I only mean about 6" to 8" up. Then, you would cut a rectangle out of the paneling using a utility knife and connect the wire to the back of the wall plate and screw the plate in.
The wall plate would look neat and tidy and then run speaker wire from it, to the speakers. This I assume would be for the front channels. If you need wiring for the surrounds which I'll assume are higher up you could still run the speaker wire from the crawlspace and for those, use that stuff SB linked.
As far as conduit for the crawlspace, yes, I believe PVC pipe is considered "conduit". However, don't worry about the "code" sorry Firestorm.
I don't know what your crawlspace is like but mine was very claustrophobic and full of fucking creepy crawlers. I just ran thickly encased car audio speaker wire and was done with it.
Conduit pvc would have had me down there a lot longer because I had water pipes that I would have had to navigate around and instead I just let the wire hang below them. Just be careful with the HOT water pipes if you have them and don't let the wire touch them.
That's my 2 cents. I only suggest checking for resale sake. If you have anything non-code-friendly in your house, it has potential for removing FHA buyers from the pool of home buyers. That's if you have a house of low enough value for FHA buyers anyway. Then again, so long as you make the wires nice and neat, they'll probably never look twice at them.
What I find funny is, non-plenum wiring typically has PVC sheathing It's inexpensive vastly cheaper than Monster Cable and is awesome stuff - happens to be in-wall rated too. I have the 12 gauge wire 52 cents per foot , and it was a breeze to pull through the basement. It was just as fun to pull out. The only nice thing about it was how fast it sold in the garage sale. As Iggy pointed out, you should be able to run wire up through the floor and sill plate of the wall that you want to place wires in.
You just have to find the right place for the hole, right between the two studs where you want the "outlet". You just have to be sure to locate the wall precisely, or you could end up drilling up into the living area instead of the wall cavity.
You also need to hit between studs. Use utilities for reference - ducts, plumbing, wiring, etc Otherwise, there are flexible drill bits for this purpose - expensive - that you could use to drill down from the outlet hole. They usually have a provision i. Besides PVC pipe, there is flexible plastic conduit that you may or may not find easier to work with.
If you can get a hole in the sill plate big enough, you should be able to get that all the way up to the outlet. If you do use conduit, you probably want to at least consider this for getting up the wall, since getting a straight piece of pipe up the wall is most likely impossible. I like to rearrange the living room too much, so I haven't bothered. In a dedicated HT, I'd more heavily consider it. Thanks for the input guys. I think the way the living room is made that moving the furniture a lot will not be an option.
Plus when the wife puts the furniture the way she likes it we rarely ever move it. I showed her both options and her reaction was a little less than enthusiastic sp shal we say but I will give her the benefit of the doubt since we had both been working our jobs and been working on getting the house ready.
In the long run she will leave it up to me. I did a little research yesterday evening and I have noticed that some folks will run wire that is for landscaping with outdoor lighting so I guess that could be used as well and just use the tracks to hide it going up the wall. I want this job to look better than my last one.
Jul 22, It's part of the NEC. Non in wall rated wire inside a PCV pipe does not satisfy the code. I will see if I can find the exact code language, but if something happens, and say for whatever reason your house burns down, your insurance can deny your claim if you do NOT use in wall rated cables. I'll check the book when I get to work in the morning for you.
What we do, is take an insulation hanger, put it in the drill and get as close to the wall as possible. Going straight down, you drill up, about an inch and ahalf away from it, into the cavity inside the wall, and pop out where we want to. Also, be sure you secure the wire under the house. Mice and other critters like to eat speaker wire If you lived closer j.
Good point about insurance.

Taperwire® Self-Adhesive Flat Speaker Wire
Has anyone done some wiring of outdoor speakers utilizing buried cable? I intend to finally install some speakers into my yard and need to run speaker wire along the side fence line to the back fence and then mount some speakers on my fence. Any tips? I saw someone use pvc pipe to put the wire through and then they buried the pvc pipe.

Any one have experience with this? Does the flat wire work as well as 12guage speaker wire? I would not run speaker wire through the center of a room , or under any high traffic areas. Maybe rounding the edges will save some length , I have seen wood floors damaged from having speaker wire under the carpet, it can't be good for the wire if it gets walked on enough to embed itself into a wood floor. If you plan on running the wire under the carpet to hide it , make sure you chisel out a small piece of the tackstrip where the wire enters and exits, then duck tape the wire SECURELY to the floor wherever you choose to run it.. Hope this helps.

Descriptive Audio. Audio cables can be a pain to deal with. The first method is using speaker wire tape. Simply cut a piece about an inch in length and wrap the cable up with it as you would do with electrical tape.
