Which is better 16 gauge or 14 gauge speaker wire?
I purchased the Sonos Amp and 6 sonance speakers, each to be run in a mono setup 1 speaker per room. Before I go out and purchase the speaker wire to run, I wanted to know, what gauge speaker wire can I reasonably fit when all connected to the single Amp? The wire needs to be sturdy enough and safe enough to enclose in the ceilings.
Thick wire 12 or 14 gauge is recommended for long wire runs, high power applications, and low-impedance speakers 4 or 6 ohms. For relatively short runs less than 50 feet to 8 ohm speakers, 16 gauge wire will usually do just fine.
Use the big wire for the runs but then get a couple feet of the largest wire that will fit in the Sonos connectors and make up two pigtails to hook from the Amp to the speaker run wires. I prefer this as the Amp to banana plug junction is likely to have a higher resistance and chance of having issues over time.
Same for the join of the pig-tail to speaker runs, use a good quality connector to join them and it will be problem free. Already have an account? Enter your username or e-mail address. Audiophiles listen attentively for the tiniest details of sound quality. But most people put on music and then read, talk, exercise, work, or a variety of other activities. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire. The higher the number, the skinnier the cable. For most speaker setups, 16 AWG will be fine, but if you need longer lengths of cable, around 25 feet or so, it would probably be better to get thicker cable, either 14 or 12 AWG. Ideally, the cables running to paired speakers should be the same length. Just what I ordered.

Thick wire 12 or 14 gauge is recommended for long wire runs, high power applications, and low-impedance speakers 4 or 6 ohms. How to Choose the Right Gauge Speaker Wire
However, if you are pushing power over long distances you may want to opt for a larger cable smaller guage. Want to save a ton of money on high end cables? This speaker wire set up is fine and will easily do the job but if you wish to minimize your power loss at the speaker terminal you may want to opt for a slightly larger gauge cable. Under these parameters watts is at the edge of the number of watts 14 guage speaker wire can distribute. I increased the length of the cable up to 60 feet and it was still able to carry the load but lost over watts from insertion loss at the speaker terminals.
Speaker systems with high power requirement will need a 12 or gauge speaker wire because they have lower resistance and will be better at power handling. Using a gauge speaker wire in this case will result in speaker wire getting hotter. Comparing gauge vs gauge speaker wire, the main difference is their thickness and resistance.

Figuring out the best speaker wires can be a daunting task, especially for first time installers. You need to consider the proper gauge that will deliver the best sound quality, how long of cabling you need, which type of cable you need, and what type of connectors are required by your speakers. Before we can discuss what gauge wire is appropriate for your speakers, you first need to understand what wire gauge even is. The lower this number is, the thicker the wire is.
