Bad amplifier tubes 811
QRZ Forums. I had a condition where, irregardless of whether the amplifier was in standby, operate, keyed or unkeyed, the grid current meter went negative, plate current was showing around 75 mA, and my radio was complaining about high swr. The problem cleared up and the amplifier once again is operating normally and putting out full power I've had this amplifier for over a month now and up until now it's always performed flawlessly and put out full rated power At first I suspected a relay problem since this condition disappeared with no intervention from me, but I didn't really understand how a bad relay could cause these symptoms My H is of the newer design with 2 relays. Then I stumbled across a troubleshooting guide by W8JI in which he states: 2. Grid meter moves backward, and Ip meter reads forward, with no drive and amplifier in standby Tube has a filament-grid short from shipping damage or tube manufacturing defects A shorted grid-filament shows as little or no RF output power, and high transceiver SWR Try removing all tubes, then insert tubes one in at a time, to find bad tube Tube has or had an internal arc from gas or air leakage If a tube arced, a filament circuit component may have shorted to the chassis. This could be a MOV on the filament winding of the transformer, or a gas protection clamp tube under the sockets A defective bypass capacitor may be shorting the filament or the filament center tap line to ground A backwards moving grid meter that never goes forward is always an indication of a filament to ground shorts, either inside or outside the tube SO

Matched Quad ( 4) Machlett 811A Tubes
New to Ham Radio? My Profile. You can write your own review of the Ameritron AL However, the price of the AL makes it the Best Buy for the money.
But, it is well built. It has a 17lb power transformer that is of conservative design for a watt PEP output amp. The high voltage 3KV bridge rectifier does operate a little more efficient vs full-wave doubler see Hammond transformer tech data.
The Ameritron design 2 to 1 rectifier peak to operating voltage does seem to be reliable, but I would prefer at least a 4KV bridge. I will change to 6KV with replacing each rectifier with two in series.
The A tubes are a crap shoot per other posts. These tubes have the plate fins and are much more forgiving during tuning. High vacuum is important! Tubes should be at 10 to -6 Torr or higher vacuum. I suspect the Chinese are as low as Torr. You can install Chinese Bs, but some have also experienced internal tube flashovers anyways despite the much higher B operating voltage. If you can find Cetron Bs, the amp will never experience a flashover and tubes will likely last 30 years or more.
I would limit the amp to watts output unless using B tubes. Also, some have mentioned using B tubes produce lower third order IMD. I suspect it is still dB. So, watts PEP is available from this amp with Bs. But, is it worth it? The capacitor bank is maxed out with four volt rated capacitors. The amp will operate with about volts no load to volts full load on the B tubes.
At volts the B start to wake up and will produce watts PEP output, no problem. All in all the AL is a good amplifier for the money. So, never having owned an amp before, I wanted to dip my toe in the water, and this amp is is the least expensive currently made. It was about 3 years old, according to the included original invoice. Not a spec of dust inside. The tubes were devoid of any signs of abuse. So far so good, its my first amp. The rest of the bands are about 1.
No problems are anticipated with re-tuning. The increased signal to him was a blessing. My Elmer Passed and is a Silent Key. Mostly 10Mtrs when Band opens. Stock fan was left in place. Tubes seem to last longer now. AM Ops are at watts output. Long winded transmissions are the Norm. Problems arise when I forget to plug in the external fan…..
Only problem I have is with heat. Better tube life has been achieved with addition of the external fan. This amp was not designed for longwinded AM Ops, I understand that. I have pretty much learned to live with losing tubes due to heat, however there must be a better solution, other than placing the amp in an ice box, ice house etc……perhaps cooling thermal couples on the air inlet…. I find them much harder to cool. ARB Description Hide. The ARB will work with almost any transceiver without the need of the plug-and-play cable.
The ARB advanced interface is compatible with all common radios and amplifiers even though radios and amplifiers do not have standardized voltages, accessory plugs, or wiring. The input is designed to be compatible with any transmitter or transceiver, and the output is compatible with AC control lines or DC positive or negative amplifier control lines having up to Volts peak open circuit voltage and mA of operating current.
This is the deluxe version of ATP The ATP has, in addition to the features listed below, Duty Cycle and Pulse Rate controls on front panel for easy performance testing of wattmeters, QSK systems and other equipment. The Ameritron ATP Amplifier Saver lets you safely tune up your linear amplifier perfectly for full power output and best linearity. It protects your expensive amplifier from overheating, tube damage, power supply stress and arc-over during tune-up.
It prevents premature failure and costly component replacements. Ameritrons innovative pulse tuning technology lets you tune your amplifier at full peak output power for best linearity. It keeps average power to a low safe level to prevent overheating and power supply stress. Well you can… but if you dont re-tune at high power which causes overheating you can create severe splatter and abuse your rube grids because of excessive grid current. If your linear uses tubes that are easily damaged by normal tune-up, the ATP could extend tube life.
Also use to evaluate wattmeters and QSK systems. Set and forget internal trim pots let you tailor duty cycle and pulse rate precisely for your rig and amplifier.
Plugs into your rigs CW key jack. Simply press Pulse Tune button and tune your amplifier normally for maximum power output. Locking Pulse Tune and momentary Carrier Tune buttons. Fully shielded all metal case. Also read carefully and know that this requires a 9 volt battery to operate. You are commenting using your WordPress.

Very Radio Specific as far as how to hook it up. Caution make sure you read carefully, some radio, such as mine, you will not need the power cable, the specific radio cable has the radio providing the power to the unity. Reviews Summary for Ameritron AL Email Subscription You are not subscribed to this review. My Subscriptions Subscriptions Help. I have had ran this amplifier for 2 years now, working countries, all 50 US states, and all during one of the worst solar minimums in our history. I usually run it at about w and it never gets very hot and the meters look happy.
I have broken through many pile ups with the combination of my modest equipment and well placed and well built resonant wire antennas. Sure, I could do better, but this amplifier, when properly tuned and not abused, will get you a nice signal increase and put you in position to make contacts.
I use mine daily. Often switching bands and antennas requiring many re-tunes. It keeps on chugging along. I see no viable reason to upgrade. The only problem has been difficulty in getting it to tune on

Verified purchase: Yes Condition: New. I put a set of these in my older model Ameritron and they produced the maximum output power. I get excellent reports on SSB with these tubes. I drive them up to the point where they just glow dull red and have not had any problems. They were packaged very well and arrived very quickly.

Electron tubes are almost outdated, but there was one time when the electron tube was in every piece of electronic hardware that received or transmitted Radio Frequency signals or accomplished some other electronic function like amplifying sound. As we will discuss, tubes were a giant step forward in getting wireless transmissions received or transmitted in the early years of radio. In England, tubes are called valves, but if you call them a tube or a valve, they still do the same thing. Tubes are called vacuum tubes, and you can say they are electronic tubes. It is the same function, same thing, just different wording.

We design and manufacture our tubes for high fidelity, reliability and warmth. Our tubes have always been known for their reliability and great tone due to our strong committment to quality engineering and manufacturing. For a tube to be labeled with our brand, it must endure and pass the toughest testing in the industry. Electro-Harmonix vacuum tubes are the leading choice for many legendary amplifier manufacturers and if you want great sounding tubes at an affordable price, then EHX tubes should be on the top of your list. A vacuum tube is an electronic device consisting of a minimum of four active elements: a heater filament , a cathode, a grid and a plate, all sealed in a vacuum glass enclosure to prevent parts from burning.

AL Changes. Power line voltage jumpers in AL80B mainframe. This includes the AL and AL series. Power line voltage in the USA is or nominal. If you operate SSB and have a reasonably good power line, you will see no improvement going to V on any amplifier shipped as V.

RELATED VIDEO: WAWAC MD811 amplifierIf you cannot hear them, you cannot work them. So, before buying an amplifier, install the very best antenna system you can afford. The best example of a compromise antenna is a G5RV because it was designed to provide great results only on 20m — on every other band it is a compromise and on 80 it gives very poor results, on it is little better than a Dummy-Load. A good antenna system gives gain in two directions, receive and transmit. If you use a poor antenna, you will get poor performance in both directions. The BEST way to get cheap gain is to eliminate loss.
