Difference between single ended and push pull amplifier
An electronic amplifier , amplifier , or informally amp is an electronic device that increases the power of a signal. It does this by taking energy from a power supply and controlling the output to match the input signal shape but with a larger amplitude. In this sense, an amplifier modulates the output of the power supply. Numerous types of electronic amplifiers are specialized to various applications. An amplifier can refer to anything from a electrical circuit that uses a single active component, to a complete system such as a packaged audio hi-fi amplifier.

What is a single-ended amplifier?
David, aka Grumpy, needs our help. Great news. David is home! It was quite the ordeal to get him home and into the house, but it is done.
Thank you to everyone for their support. Now a long road ahead to get him back on his feet and functioning normally. I have started a GoFundMe to help with the medical bills.
Please help, if you can. Log in or Sign up. Messages: 1, I have heard this terminology but don't know what it means. And is one topology better than the others? Or is it just a matter of preference? You'll probably find the answer towards the beginning of this forum Back on topic. My primary amp is a push-pull, a Line Magnetic ia. I really like it. Some limited, non-technical and possibly incorrect observations regarding push-pull vs. SET: Push-pull: cheaper in general and per wattage output; more tube options and therefore more "tube rolling" possibilities; more amp options to choose from generally; usually more powerful and therefore able to drive a greater variety of speakers.
SET: more mystique; somewhat cultish but might be interesting to join the cult ; generally low wattage, so use of very efficient speakers is recommended full-range, horns, older Klipsch ; more "tubey"; limited types and often very expensive tubes; reputedly magical - like being at a live performance. Messages: 10, Location: miles N. Double your output. I haven't listened to an SE amp. I think my PP amp sounds great, and I don't have to be extremely picky about my speakers or worry too much about their impedance curves.
Zvezda , May 3, Messages: 3, Location: Terra, 21st century CE. I have listened to PP amps for over 25 years and 5 years ago i made my own SE EL84 amp and realized that it sounded great. It had an audio quality that was missing in the pp amp. Basically, the difference is the presence of second harmonic products which are removed in a push pull topology and the abscense of a phase splitting circuit and pp output transformer to reform the mirror imaged signals.
PP topology by removing the 2H leaves 3H and higher harmonics in its place. These remaining odd order harmonics are unpleasant to out ears and will become harsher sounding when the amp approaches maximum power. Single ended amps whether powered by triodes or tetrodes or beam pentodes do not have the odd order distortion problems as 2H distortion products dominate.
Second harmonics are pleasant to our ears. As with anything there is no "free lunch". Without the noise cancelling action of a pp stage much care must be taken in construction and design of the power supply for low residual noise.
Ah but the sound qualtiy can be mesmerizing and seductive. Of course, i am just scratching the surface of the debate, and one must judge for themselves by listening to each type.
If you are truly in search for the sonic experience that can leave you totally involved in the music reproduction. Then one must make the effort to listen to both types.
It is a mistake to think that SE costs more than PP. If one looks hard enough or makes the right connections you can get a very high quality amp for a reasonable price that is made in the usa. Because of the popularity of high power triodes the 2a3, b, and command very high prices. But if you prefer to go se without the hi priced tubes beam power tubes like 6l6, kt66, kt88, and the higher power kt and kt can be a satisfying alternative.
Messages: 1, Location: Cape Cod. There really is no "debate" about one topology or the other since both PP and SE have the potential to offer truly high end sound. Much of achieving truly outstanding sound quality is about synergy within the entire sound system and, indeed, what's needed in both SE and PP is synergy between the output tubes, output transformers, and speakers.
That synergy is particularly important as the potential power output of the amplifier diminishes, constrained by the practical limitations of a single ended 2A3 or B amplifier. As you reach the threshold of 2. Both SE and PP have their respective engineering challenges as well as their technical difficulties in overcoming these challenges.
That doesn't mean that all SE amps suffer from H2 distortion! That simply means that reducing H2 is one of the engineering challenges of the topology, just like creating a low distortion phase inverter, without adding an additional gain stage, is one of the engineering challenges of PP. My latest SE B amp has H2 distortion of just 1. H3 is much more detrimental to the sound than H2 and so the designer of a PP amp must be cognizant of that.
In the end, much of the attraction of either topology is a function of the listener's preferred speakers. I have speakers specified to be about dB by the manufacturer. Yesterday I replaced it with my latest B amplifier using an EF driver.
Both amps are two stages driver and output tube with a volume control at the input, both employ high current low DCR power supplies with no electrolytics and both amps sound great. Selmerdave , May 4, Push pull has been the standard for tube amps and solid state amps for years. The term single end is defined as half the amp at twice the price. Sounds like a rip off to me.
If single end is so good, why did someone develop push pull??? To get more power at a lower distortion. Sorry for being an old timer but I know a deal not good when I see one.
Messages: 6, Location: Edmonton Alberta Canada. SE is. Messages: I own more than 2 dozen working tube amps, and my SEP amp supports more types of tubes than any other amp I own. There are also several options for input tubes. The decibel scale is logarithmic — a difference of 3dB represents approximately twice the power. In addition to speaker sensitivity, other important factors are the size of the room H x W x D , and how loud you listen, and if you use a subwoofer to off-load work from the main amp and speakers i.
The type of music is also important. Most pop music has little dynamic range, and is less demanding on a hi-fi system compared with uncompressed hi-resolution e.
Sound quality of my SEP amp can be excellent, given the right tube complement, and synergistic speakers that have high sensitivity. Provisions that are valid at a general level e. The structural association with elements coupled with amplifiers can be classified either in H03F or in the subclass covering the element or in both the subclasses , depending on which aspect is more relevant. In particular H03F units represented as "black boxes" in a specific application e. Amplifiers capable only of dealing with pulses, electronic switches, comparators, logic circuits, PWM signals. As general remark, it must be noted that multiple classification symbols may be given. The philosophy is to classify documents in several sub-groups as the case may be, i. The following IPC groups, which are mostly related to discharge tube amplifiers or general type amplifiers, are used to classify circuit topologies based also on vacuum tubes, valve amplifiers, due to historical reasons see vacuum tube amplifier in the "Glossary of terms" section below :. Amplifying devices operating in class A conduct in their linear range over the whole of the input cycle. Amplifying devices operating in class B conduct in their linear range half of the time and are turned off for the other half. Amplifying devices operating in class AB conduct in their linear range for more than half of the time.

Push-Pull vs. Single-Ended in Class A Operation. For a push-pull amplifier, the pull-up transistor is on for 0 degrees through degrees, and the pull-down transistor is on for degrees through degrees. Is there any difference in the way the circuit performs when it is operating in Class A vs. Class B?

Single Ended vs Push Pull tube amplifiers
WlLKlNS 3,, Wilkins, Mountain View, Calif. Push-pull amplifiers are generally employed as balanced amplifiers to provide a minimum of distortion resulting from the generation of even-order harmonics.
Push–pull output
Push Pull you can get much more power. If your thinking tubes I love tubes myself you will need a push pull amp for sure. If your replacing the KEF's as well then your whole world of tubes amps opens up. SET are very seductive in the midrange but can if not done well be rolled off a bit at the highest top and lowest bottom.
