Hoverspeed was a ferry company that operated on the English Channel from until It was formed in by the merger of Seaspeed and Hoverlloyd. Its last owners were Sea Containers ; the company ran a small fleet of two high-speed SeaCat catamaran ferries in its final year. In late , when the two companies eventually merged, the situation was dire. Draper had been involved in filling empty passenger seats aboard the new Boeing jumbo jets in the early s when IATA regulations prohibited discounting.

He was also successful in turning Concorde services profitable. Nevertheless, a number of early decisions plagued the new company. First, Hoverspeed inherited an antiquated reservation system which was inadequate, resulting in potential travellers having great difficulty in contacting Hoverspeed and many being told crossings were fully booked when they were not. This necessitated the reversion to a very basic manual reservation system to try to cope with demand. The most damaging mistake was to increase the number of crossings operated, over 10, in , which did not match demand and the decision to briefly re-open the Ramsgate route for the summer season which was counter-productive.

The company immediately adopted premium instead of parity pricing, justified on the grounds that a faster service was expected to be more expensive.

An aggressive advertising campaign was mounted against the ferries and more effort was made to target fares accurately. Large financial gains made by former managers of British Rail was to become a feature of rail privatization. Being part of a larger shipping company allowed fresh re-capitalization, cheaper fuel as well as access to legal services. With the reduced fleet of hovercraft aging, it also permitted capital investment into more fuel efficient vessels with the first SeaCat catamaran services introduced in and larger Super SeaCats in , the latter to achieve economies of scale in the face of stiff competition from the Channel Tunnel and the ferry companies.

Hoverspeed briefly ran services from Ramsgate Pegwell Bay Hoverport in which had been the base of Hoverlloyd hovercraft services. Four Superseacats were ordered by Hoverspeed's parent company Sea Containers after the original Superseacat design built by Austal failed to meet the speed required.

After sustaining losses annually since the last financial year the company returned a pre-tax profit it was clear, by the early s, Hoverspeed could no longer continue operating business-as-usual. Despite the introduction of the Super SeaCats, Hoverspeed could not match EuroTunnel both in terms of economies of scale and pricing. This became apparent in the company's pre-tax profits immediately following the opening of the Channel Tunnel in May Lucrative duty-free sales came to an end in July when the European Union removed tariffs between members states.

It was initially thought that both the 81m Seacats would move to Sea Containers Mediterranean services. It is 10 years since the final flight of a Hovercraft out of Dover. A hovercraft is a vessel which skims the water on a three foot cushion of air. When it reaches land it simply deflates that cushion and sits down. It needed no special ports or tying up and could cross the Channel in half an hour. It was simple and it was British. The world's first metal hovercraft crossed from Calais to Dover in two hours on 25 July with its inventor Sir Christopher Cockerel on board. The first two cross channel passenger services started in with a Hoverlloyd service from Pegwell Bay to Calais. On 14 June Townsend Car Ferries launched Britannia to cross from Dover but bad weather and technical problems saw that service withdrawn by July. The world's first hovercraft car ferry made its maiden trip from Dover to Boulogne on 11 June and crossed in 25 minutes reaching speeds of 50 knots. That year also saw the introduction of the first SRN4 craft which were powered by four Rolls Royce Proteus gas turbine engines.

Hoverlloyd operated a cross-Channel hovercraft service between Ramsgate , England to Calais , France. Originally registered as Cross-Channel Hover Services Ltd in , the company was renamed Hoverlloyd during the following year. Widespread construction, meanwhile, relied heavily on migrant workers, whose living and working conditions were often far from satisfactory. Building sites had a considerable impact on existing inhabitants: some residents organised community action to defend the interests of people displaced by infrastructure development.
