How to FIX Car Speakers Crackling [STEPS ]
Chic styling and a desirable nameplate emblazoned above its grille makes the Range Rover Velar an attractive choice in compact-luxury SUV world. But its unrefined powertrains, clumsy handling, and buggy infotainment system are all causes for pause.
All-wheel drive is standard, as is an eight-speed automatic transmission that's shifted from a rotary knob on the center console that pops up when you start the ignition. Land Rover offers several trims and a plethora of option packages and customization choices to aid customers in designing a nearly bespoke SUV to suit their individual tastes.
The high-performance SV Autobiography Dynamic edition joins the lineup for , powered by a rip-snorting supercharged 5.
We've driven it already , and it's awesome. Elsewhere, Land Rover has made more minor updates, such as making Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration across the Velar lineup and fitting the base S model with driver-assistance tech such as blind-spot monitoring, way power-adjustable front seats, a power-adjustable steering column, and SiriusXM satellite radio.
Two new colors are also available: Eiger Grey and Carpathian Grey. Land Rover has eliminated the diesel four-cylinder from the lineup. We'd love to recommend the raucous SV Autobiography model, but its price tag puts it out of reach of most consumers. Instead, we'd recommend going with the P R-Dynamic S, which adds inch wheels, a dual exhaust with polished finishers, a blacked-out grille, and leather-and-suede interior upholstery.
We'd also suggest adding the Dynamic Handling package, which includes an adjustable suspension system, a drive-mode selector, and All Terrain Progress Control, which acts as a sort of adaptive cruise control for low speeds or in slippery conditions. Unlike Goldilocks' home invasion, shopping for a Velar does not offer a "just right" powertrain combination.
Every model uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, but one must pair those items with one of three engines. The base hp turbocharged 2. The supercharged 3. The Velar P V-6 managed a 5. Much like the Velar's acceleration, its handling is by no means sporty. The suspension competently controls the SUV's body motions and keeps body roll in check while returning a firm, well-managed ride.
Models equipped with the available air suspension can raise and lower their ride height for either more dynamic moves on-road or greater dexterity off it. The Velar's weight is likely to blame for the turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine's being just 3 mpg better 23 mpg combined than the more powerful supercharged V-6 option.
Our Velar test vehicle with the V-6 was a laggard, with a posted 22 mpg in our real-world highway fuel-economy test. That's 2 mpg short of the EPA's highway estimate; with the turbocharged four-cylinder, we managed 26 mpg. Dig modern architecture? You'll probably like the Velar's simple interior, which is rendered largely from horizontal lines and bold rectilinear forms. Oh, and the materials used throughout are high quality and deployed in interesting ways. Take the door trim: Instead of using a spear of wood or carbon fiber inlaid into the upper part of the door panels, Land Rover adds the owner's choice of wood or metal into the section of the door between the upper and lower panels.
Our test vehicle featured aluminum trim, and every Velar has excellent detailing throughout. The Velar's generally boxy shape and visually pleasing rear overhang—bodywork that extends behind the rear wheels—combine to swallow more carry-on suitcases than its immediate competitors with its rear seats up or folded. We fit 10 of our carry-on suitcases behind the rear seats and 23 with all seats folded. Of course, we'd be remiss if we discussed the interior without tipping our caps to the wildly futuristic-looking dual dashboard-touchscreen displays.
Their fonts and on-screen graphics make a strong visual statement that matches the cabin's modern vibe, even if their functionality could be smoother. A better audio system with more speakers, navigation, and SiriusXM satellite radio requires additional options or a move up through the Velar's trim levels.
Land Rover makes available the latest driver-assistance technologies such as automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control on the Velar. Key safety features include:.
The Velar's four-year, 50,mile limited warranty is pretty much par for the course among its competitors. Interestingly, Jaguar's mechanically similar F-Pace carries both a stronger warranty and a five-year, 60,mile complimentary scheduled maintenance plan; the latter is something that Land Rover only offers as a dealer add-on. While the Range Rover Velar's infotainment system allows smartphone-like interaction, it is not the most intuitive. You are likely to take your eyes off the road when using the screens. Its striking looks do turn some heads. When they do come out, they project the Range Rover logo on the ground. This includes two screens—one on the dashboard and another just below it. The screen on the dash tilts outwards when you get into the car, so it does not reflect sunlight and is easy to use when you drive. The tech features are split between these screens. While the upper screen takes care of phone calls, navigation, Bluetooth control and more, the lower screen lets you adjust terrain response to shift between different driving modes , music, climate and more. Both displays are reasonably responsive to touches, though they could have been better.
