First I started with the chalkboard. I took the table top and sprayed the chalk paint on the reverse side. This gives you the option to flip the table top if you want to use it as a normal table. This is a great kids table if you are looking for a separate space for your child ren to do crafts, have tea parties, read books, play blocks, and create impromptu caves.
Or is that only our daughter who throws her biggest blanket over the tops of tables and crawls underneath? We use it every day. I originally hacked this table when our daughter was too young for it, but starting when she was about 18 months, we have used it every day since. This little thing shows no dents, no stains, and no trauma. Anything your decor throws at it be it living room, play room, or garage , this little guy can handle it!
Our tutorial below even shows how to make a padded seat for chubby little kid legs. Even the display model was sturdy and you KNOW how much those things get crawled all over. The only problem wa s that it is very simple. And plain. Actually, very plain. And kind of boring. The worst part is that the chairs looked really uncomfortable. Our little girl had some chunky toddler thighs and it just seemed that there was something that could be done.
So I did something. I changed it up a bit with some dark stain and added a padded chair seat. Every piece of furniture in our house is dark wood and I knew I could easily alter this little thing to match. Note: The table and chairs are made of pine wood and it sucked the stain in.
It took three coats of a very dark stain to get it this espresso brown. The final tip is regarding the Plexiglass — Do. It has saved us so many times.
A friend did this without the nicks in the corners, and it works as well as ours! Before you assemble the table and chairs, stain or paint each piece. Just think about it. Once stained, assemble the table as instructed by Ikea. Or, as in my case, ask your husband — very nicely — if he will help you put it together. Then leave him alone to finish it. The chairs were a bit trickier than the table. I mocked up a prototype for an Ikea LATT cushion see my pine wood chair with a pink, striped fabric seat without any hardware , making sure that the foam and fabric would still allow the chair to be put together.
It did, so I proceeded. I cut the craft foam so that it was just shy of the seat edges that slide into the outer chair pieces. After your foam is cut, you will affix it to the seat piece with a small amount of spray adhesive or glue. Once it has set, cover the seat with the fabric and hot glue each side of the fabric to the chair.
I folded my fabric over, making a trapezoid. Because I have trust issues with hot glue, I also secured two of the sides with some khaki colored duct tape I had on hand. Get it? Burned by hot glue? Moving on. The underside of my chair, once assembled, looks like this. In true Ikea fashion, all pieces fit with just a little wiggle-room.
Now listen, y ou cannot put the chair together following the directions that come with the Latt table because the fabric is in the way. I wiggled the pieces around, pushed as hard as I could, and then pounded it with a shoe seriously, I did in order to get the fabric-covered chair seat into the little slats. Although my husband questioned my method of tools, the flat-bottomed shoe worked perfectly. To keep the table top looking pristine — I know, a lesson in futility with a rambunctious toddler using it for crafts — we added a Plexiglas topper, cut to the size of the assembled table top.
Handy, right? It is so easy and the kids just love it! You can use home decor weight fabric, although I used a very thick sheet I picked up a thrift store. If you're refinishing an old one, this is optional, but recommended. There is an indentation.
After your foam is cut, you will want to affix it to the seat piece with a small amount of spray adhesive or glue. Once it has been affixed, cover the seat with the fabric and hot glue each side of the fabric to the chair.
I also secured two of the sides with some khaki colored duct tape I had on hand. Assemble the table and chairs, drop in the plexiglass topper, and set up your tea party, LEGO builds, or anything else you'd like! Thank you for this! My husband and I just finished chairs for our son he's 3 and the chairs certainly seem sturdy enough! We used outdoor fabric and instead of folding like a gift we cut the corners off and folded edge by edge.. We used 1" foam and I'm so glad that's what you recommended!
Thank you for giving us this idea!!!!!!! Do you think I could swop out the plexiglass for perspex or something plastic? I'm thinking of a chalkboard laminate paper on the top for drawing but think without plastic or glass it wouldn't survive meals and general toddler curiosity. I just know I'd break that glass somehow. Bernadine, Perspex is exactly like Plexiglass a clear plastic. Ours has held up for 6 years, so it's definitely durable.
We didn't use it for meals all of the time, however, play date snacks, tea parties, and many milk and cookies were served on it. We are working on our Latt table now and have a question. Does your plexiglass topper just sit on top of the assembled table, or is it attached in some way?
Thank you! Cristina, Ours sits in the small space between the Ikea top and the top edge of the wood. So the plexiglass is aligned with the top of the wood, so it's smooth and nothing catches on anything. I just got this set second hand and tried to stain it but the stain wouldn't soak into the wood like yours did. A second-hand version is more budget friendly so what a great find! The previous owners might have sealed the table to protect it, Krystal.
Try sanding it off and checking to see if the stain takes. We've done this to two of the tables one was a gift for someone without the Plexiglass topper and it's taken both times. Sarah this is so cute! I have been eyeing that table for my daughter, but thought it was too plain too!

This easy hack is too good not to share. This fun table keeps my daughter entertained for hours, and encourages her to draw and be creative! Anything to minimise screen time is a bonus in my books! Initially, we were given a super funky and expensive kids table as a gift but the chairs seemed too high for Little Miss to safely get up and down.
