Public Speaking Classes & Camps for High School Students


WSU Tech offers many transferable general education courses. Here is a list of course descriptions — speech classes, many offered in class or online by WSU Tech.

Covers fundamental basics to all good private and public speaking experiences and elements in voice production and improvement, bodily movement, confidence, poise and understanding of all types of public speeches. Required of all transfer curricula. Improves individual communication skills. By understanding the elements of effective communication, students are able to create environments that bring out the best in themselves and others. In addition, students learn how to better turn ideas and feelings into words, how to listen more effectively, respond more appropriately to what others have said and, most important of all, how to maintain and develop good interpersonal relationships with their families, their peers and fellow workers.

Emphasis is placed on small-group activities, interviewing skills and verbal and non-verbal communication. The following courses are offered by WSU Tech and are guaranteed to transfer to public colleges and universities in Kansas:. There is a growing list of courses approved by the Kansas Board of Regents for guaranteed transfer among all Kansas public postsecondary institutions. WSU Tech is always working hard to increase transferability of courses.

Courses for Communication Studies

This path helps you build your skills as an accomplished public speaker. The projects on this path focus on learning how an audience responds to you and improving your connection with audience members. The projects contribute to developing an understanding of effective public speaking technique, including speech writing and speech delivery. Course Descriptions – Speech


T he Communications English Elective course is in progress for the first time at Palo Alto High School, taking a new perspective on literature by focusing on practical life skills. The new English elective is taught by teacher Lucy Filppu and is available to both juniors and seniors. Filppu has a passion for starting new classes, as she also started Comedy Literature, another English elective. In the class, the students will examine the foundations of communication and leadership techniques as well as study texts both past and present to raise questions about how communication affects the ability to actualize an authentic relationship with oneself and others. Filppu plans to help students create their own digital portfolios for future business plans as well as improve presentation skills. The class has spent the past weeks preparing for one of its bigger projects: a how-to speech. The curriculum focuses on public speaking, leadership skills and different forms of communication such as business etiquette. The class combines global competencies such as understanding international issues and business models with literature.

Paths, Levels and Electives


The Speech Communication major is focused on developing and enhancing communication competence through the examination of both theoretical and practical aspects of human communication. Speech communication majors must complete 48 credit hours including 9 credits from the prerequisite core. A minimum 2. This course is an application of communication theory and practice to the public speaking context, with emphasis on audience analysis, speaker delivery, ethics of communication, cultural diversity, and speech organizational techniques to develop students' speaking abilities, as well as ability to effectively evaluate oral presentations. This course is the application of communication theory to interpersonal relationship development, maintenance, and termination in relationship contexts including friendships, romantic partners, families, and relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This course is the study and application of communication within the business and professional context. Special emphasis will be given to communication competencies in presentations, dyads, teams, and technologically mediated formats. This course covers instruction in the development of effective habits in the use of the speaking voice. It covers the study of English phonetics, phrasing, intonation and voice production. This course includes discussion and small group theories and techniques as they relate to group processes and interaction.
