I recently purchased a new pair of speakers, and have found myself asking a question that never seemed applicable before: Should I leave the speakers on display in my room with the grill covers on or off? What do you do? I never did this myself because… well… none of the speakers I ever owned previously looked very attractive with the covers off. On the one hand, I kind of like the looks of these towers when I can see all the horns. View Results. Voted no but for practical reasons.

Stereo speakers are typically wood or plastic boxes with speaker components on the inside. For decoration and to keep dust and other particles from settling on the actual speakers, manufacturers often place cloth grills on the front. These grills can become a magnet for dust, pet hair and other debris common in most homes.
Many speaker grill cloths are mounted on a frame that can be removed from the speaker. Although this makes it easier to clean, it is not necessary in most instances. Place the furniture brush attachment on the hose of your vacuum cleaner. Lightly vacuum the outside of the speaker cloth to remove dust.
Wipe down the cloth with a dry towel. Attack stubborn pet hair or other large pieces of dbris by rolling a lint or pet hair roller over the speaker cloth. Remove stains by gently rubbing a slightly damp cloth on the stained area. Make sure not to allow water to seep into the speaker components. On speakers in which the speaker grill can be detached, remove the grill, work on the stain and allow it to dry before reattaching it to the speaker.

When you install a set of speakers, it is important to make sure that they have airflow through the grill. This will keep your audio sounding crisp and clear. If you notice any distortion in sound, then chances are there is something blocking the airflow from getting into the grill.

Though it does depend a lot on the type of speakers and grills. I have Focal Chorus speakers, and there is a separate grill over the tweeters, which has quite large holes. Unlike the grill over the mid-range speakers, the tweeter grill is metallic, so, given the size of the holes, I doubt it would have much effect. Yup, Kirk, nice speakers! Lots of variability depending on construction of the grills I'm sure any reputable manufacturer would make sure that the grill affects the sound minimally since I think everyone realizes that consumers listen with them on or off. I don't think it's in anyone's interest to use the grills as some kind of "tone control"! Oh no, what have you done Archimago! Now we will have people making 3rd party audiophile grade speaker grills with batter operated network boxes that provide increased transparency and widen the soundstage into your neighbor's house. Many people, for whatever reason, seem to prefer their loudspeaker appearance with the grilles on. Most home audio loudspeaker grilles are removable though, so their use is optional for most domestic applications. Given how fussy audio enthusiasts can be, the use of grilles has been a point of strong personal preference for as long as there have been home audio loudspeakers. Here at Audioholics, we have received many inquiries in the past pertaining to the impact of speaker grilles on the sound quality. More specifically, something along the lines of:. Since there are so many different speaker designs out there, the answer to that question could never be an absolute yes or no, at least without knowing the characteristics of that particular speaker. However, in our experience, grilles usually do not improve loudspeaker performance. In this article, we will explain how and why grilles tend to have an adverse effect on the speaker's performance, and we will also talk about how much they can actually spoil the sound quality.

Its main purpose is to protect the driver element and speaker internals and possibly other audio components from foreign objects while still allowing the sound to clearly pass. However, because it sits in the direct path of the driver, the grille interacts with the sound produced. A suitable compromise between protection and sound quality must be made based on the speaker's application. Soft grilles can be made from any well suited cloth , weaving , stitching , foam , fabric upholsteries and other similar materials.
I can remember taking an undergraduate "audio" class many years ago where the prof. Obstructions included furniture we all know this , lamps, grill covers, etc I know that this is compensated for today, but I also remember that he stated that in order to achieve the lowest accurate bass sound reproduction required that you have, at a minimum 40 feet of distance, between your speaker and any object that might interfere with the bass sound waves. How many of you remove the grills if possible from your speakers when you have a serious listening session. If so what is your reasoning for doing this?
As for top mids and heights, which are responsible for the feeling of clarity and for stereo imaging, yes it makes a noticeable difference. But, most of the time, speaker grills are on, preventing curious little hands from touching the drivers. I confess to hearing little or no difference whether on or off, but I dislike the tiger ebony finish they were an ex-dem bargain they reveal! When breaking in my PMCs, the grills were utterly necessary for 3 months to take the edge off the top. After that they came off.
