Best DAC 2021: Ultimate Buyer’s Guide

There are already a bunch of reviews out there about both, the K3 and the Q1. But this review is for those who need more clarity on the differences between these two models. These two DACs differ mostly in their applications. The K3 is designed for desktop use. It has no internal battery, so it will need to be powered from your computer. The Q1, on the other hand, is ideally designed for on the go use with your mobile device. While both, the K3 and Q1 have line outs, only the K3 has a coaxial and optical out.

Both, the K3 and Q1 have 3. And after doing an AB comparison test with both models, there was little discernible difference in sound profiles. See author's posts. With a reputation of cost-killer-yet-audiophile constructor, the Shenzhen company steadily rose from a small team to a full-fledged company, producing thousands of products each month.

Will it also be a winner? It shared the same size from the FiiO E11, a portable amplifier launched prior to the E But, it quickly became one of the hottest topics on head-fi, and for good reason.

For a fraction of the cost of an audiophile M2tech interface, the FiiO E10 was able to carry a digital signal in pass-thru from a USB connection. Visually, the differences were very subtle unless you already owned a FiiO E This made the FiiO E10K more powerful, more precise yet retaining this typical sound signature that was at the root of the success of the first generation. Floor noise was lowered, sound stage became less vague with a clear improvements in the bass section.

The idea remains the same, a small desktop USB DAC with a good chip and various ports so you can plug it in to almost anything. Compared to the previous version, the FiiO K3 is a major upgrade in term of design.

Sure, if you see it from far it looks like the same monobloc DAC you were already used to. The magic happens once you hold it in you hand: the FiiO K3 is much more sleeker, more handy to carry and it looks much more modern compared to its older brother.

In term of design, the new FiiO range is nearly faultless, even though the FiiO M9 in my opinion is the ugly duckling of the lot. You can feel a slight bump when you slide your finger over it, I kind of like it. Slowly but surely, FiiO moved all the switches from the back and bottom to the front panel.

The only switch that remains at the back is a new 2. On the front panel from left to right you get :. Again, all the connectors feel sturdy and they should endure lots of plugging and unplugging over time. With all these outputs, the FiiO K3 can be your main interface to connect all your gear to. The FiiO Q5 has been my jack of all trade in portable use this year. I can connect my phone in bluetooth or USB and connect it to almost anything thanks to its clean line out.

A nerdy guy with a passion for audio and gadgets, he likes to combine his DAC and his swiss knife. A switch on the rear of the unit allows the user to set the player to USB 1.

Input comes only in the form of USB-C, but the K3 includes outputs for optical, coax, and a standard 3. All of these ports are located on the back of the unit, while the front of the K3 features headphone outputs and a volume knob. Alongside the usual 3. The recessed LED light — which changes depending on audio source or lack of signal — helps with this effect.

In between the volume dial and the headphone outputs, a switch for gain and a switch for bass boost allow the user to adjust the volume output and low end of the DAC. You can peruse the full specs here. Instead of listening to the DAC, you listen to your music — with all the fidelity that the K3 has to offer.

The low end seems a little bit thick for a FiiO DAC, but refreshingly so, with just a little extra warmth. Despite this bit of extra attention to detail in the lows, the highs retain the usual amount of detail — sparkling and clean, with a natural glow that heightens strings and vocals.

While more suited for portable or mobile use, it lacks the same power output as the K3, making it less suitable for larger, more power-hungry cans. The added outputs and the ability to decode up to Native DSD makes the K3 a potent hub for inexpensive audio setups, too.

Again, with a modern internet connection, this should take you no more than 15 minutes, installation included. The 1. The K3 only needs mAh to power up, so you can just connect it to a hub and it will power up once you turn the knob. Too bad as those should have been a great solution on the go!

Depending of the device, volume control was muted on the phone and could only be controlled from the FiiO K3. I think this is much more intuitive than having two different volumes to control each time…. There is not much to say about the FiiO K3 in term of ergonomics, there is no screen, no UI, no battery. The only options you have are the gain and the bass, plus the volume of course. The line out is less powerful than usual, claiming a shy 1.

If you want to use the FiiO K3 for a set of power-amplified speakers, you can just set the gain a bit higher than usual. Interestingly, the volume can be adjusted if the line out is plugged in, but not if the optical out is used. Even if you only have 24bit files on your computer, or DSD. Usually you can choose which roll-off filter you will use, not this time. A little quirk, the light-ring around the volume has three different colors, depending of the sample rate:.

The Fiio K3 supports both single-ended and balanced output. They are mounted in double mono configuration, so you should get the same wide sound stage you had with the E10K. He likes spreadsheets, technical specs and all this amazing ly boring numbers. But most of all, he loves music: electro, classical, dubstep, Debussy : the daily playlist.

Big thanks Nanotechnos for this excellent review. I think they used a better filter to avoid feedback like this. The Schiit should have more power to drive your Beyerdynamic. Also, it will sound a bit more metallic, the highs are a bit too proeminent for my ears. Both are solid performers, take the Schitt if the Beyer is you main headphone, the FiiO for everything else. Download only in CD-quality, like. Forget about mp3 and YouTube, respect your ears and the gear you own that companies tried to make perfect for so long!

FiiO K5 Pro DAC/AMP review — device for those who love music

If your high-end headphones sound too quiet or dull when paired with your computer or mobile device, you may need a headphone amplifier. Powerful enough to drive most headphones, the diminutive DragonFly Red works best with computers because it needs to draw power from the connected source. About the size of a small thumb drive, the DragonFly Red is very portable and, unlike larger battery-powered amps, is easy to leave connected to a computer. The battery life is rated for around eight to 12 hours of use. With the ability to connect via Micro-USB, optical digital, coaxial digital, or a 3. The battery life will depend on how you use it, with around nine hours of playtime via Bluetooth, 10 hours through the coax connection, and 25 hours if utilized purely as an amp.

FiiO - K3 Portable USB DAC Headphone Amp

I just knew what to expect from it, I started to know its sound signature very well, in return it gave me multiple hours of musical bliss. When FiiO told us about a year ago that a successor to E10K is in the works, my nipples got hard. I have it for more than two months, so I feel I am ready to cast my humble opinion on what I liked and disliked about it. K3 comes in a simple white cardboard box. K3 is staying securely inside a sponge like material that will protect from accidental drops. To me it looks like a beefier Q1 MKII, again with a simple minimalist design, with pleasant clean lines. It looks like a very grown-up product in comparison to older FiiO designs.

PROS: Intuitive to use, significant improvement in sound quality over the internal sound of a MacBook Pro, excellent build quality, great value. No incentive was given for a favourable review. FiiO is a very well-established name among audiophiles the world over. The Chinese company was established in and has built up a reputation for affordable products with a high value ratio. You pay a budget price and get high quality equipment in return, which I think is why so many audiophiles have cut their teeth on FiiO equipment when they started out in the hobby, with DAPs such as the venerable X1, X3 and X5.
