Akai AM-32 Operator's Manual
David, aka Grumpy, needs our help. Great news. David is home! It was quite the ordeal to get him home and into the house, but it is done. Thank you to everyone for their support.

Last edited: Jun 21, Okay, Here are some pics of the amp, I just took Each channel has it's own rectifier, filter caps and probably winding on the transformer, hence dual power supply. I'm pretty sure I have an Akai I haven't seen it for a while, I may be confusing it with an Hitachi here somewhere that does have dual transformers, but it didn't get the dual power supply label.
Looking up the specs for the darlington power packs will give you an idea of the power output as it can't be anymore than the maximum rating of those devices.

The output devices are STK type. I think it has 2 secondary windings in 1 transformer, one for each channel.

It didn't do anything, then made an ugly noise through the speakers and then worked, but when I tried it again, nothing. I am interested in it even though it uses IC outputs, which I am not fond of, but it is a little more ambitious than the run of the mill integrated -- it has a midrange control and a two step variable loudness compensation.

I have an Akai integrated, AM-U4 if I recall correctly, might be slightly later than this, is 48wpc and is designed slightly differently. Pretty similar though it used discrete outputs sounded just fine IMHO, little warmer than I would have expected, especially with something with all that fancy stuff packed inside, VFDs and the like. I'd probably be using it if most of my systems weren't already in place when I got it, its a nice little amp. Messages: Location: Middletown, MD.
I usually don't like the slide-type volume controls, but that Akai is a very nice-looking amp. The flourescent meters look sharp too. RastaFish , Jan 15, I forgot to mention that the AM UO4 has the liquid flilled copper tube heat sink arrangement, which I believe gives the added pleasure of gurgling noises after it has been turned off. TiMi: Will try to get some pictures, but like several other computer dolts here, I haven't yet figure out how to post them -- the files are too big.
About postage -- its a pretty heavy object for its size. I suppose I could ask for a rough guess at the Post Office or UPS, if you are seriously interested, though I have to guess that postage would be more than its worth. TiMi , Jan 18, I just don't think this makes economic sense, because I suspect its not the greatest amp in the history of the world, its a little rough around the edges, and needs repairs, even before you get into the voltage issue. I took a look to see it it had variable voltage taps, but it does not. I suppose an adaptor might do it, but I can't believe there aren't equally interesting amps with fewer issues for relatively little money in Australia.
So unless you are an Akai nut and they didn't sell this range in Australia, I don't think you want it. Having said that,when I opened it up, I did notice that in addition to the liquid in a tube heat sink on the Sanken ICs, it had a large transformer, and dual power supplies, so some effort was taken in its construction.
If you still want it, I'll get a firm shipping price. And if anyone else closer wants it, and TiMi doesn't, give me a yell. I will try to get a dedicated preamp sooner or later, but that will probably end up being 10 years until that day.
I am looking for an amp kit that says it has far more power than i really need after I lost faith in the watt with the invention of "Car Audio". I can probably get basic parts and the boards made up at school for free, so it may cost less than buying a kit.
