Phase Linear Post by Vagante » 04 May I never owned one of these previously and I know that they are susceptible to blowing a channel which is common.

They tell me that they can fix any future problems of blowing the Channel with this overhaul. I am trying to drive some very power hungry speakers I need an amplifier about this size.

Are there any better vintage choices for that price range? Try a Hafler DH for a start. That will drive your Mc speakers until the end of time. I should mention that unlike some I don't think that vintage is necessarily better than new.

I'm concerned solely with performance. An awful lot of popular vintage power amps and receivers need a serious overhaul to allow them to perform up to original spec.

The cost of the overhaul must be factored into the cost. Re: Phase Linear Post by analogaudio » 05 May Some people feel that there was a golden age for tube amplification and that vintage cannot be improved upon.

This is not true for solid state, the early days of solid state amplification the Phase Linear is early were not particularly happy except for being smaller lighter and cheaper than the tube equivalent.

Early solid state power output levels were limited, distortion was not particularly good and reliability poor. Things got better when superior devices became available but it took twenty years for solid state amplification to mature.

Anything mid s onwards is probably worth considering but nothing earlier. The Crown mentioned above is switching amplifier technology which is lighter, smaller and cheaper than the traditional boat-anchor class AB solid state amplifier, and it is well worth considering.

It may have more power but how does it sound. With high fidelity playback sound quality counts. A lot of people that recommend these Crown amps have not been exposed to true high fidelity. Besides all that the Crown amp is a switching amp that creates it's own kind of distortions Audiosoul's post bothers me.

There is a common delusion widely promoted by glossy hifi magazines that sound quality and price are correlated. In this case this delusion would state that the Crown isn't expensive enough to sound good.

This delusion is based on two fallacies: that high quality audio requires expensive parts; and that sound quality increases as the price increases. Both are false. The cheapest products sometimes haven't sufficient money in the parts budget to purchase decent parts and build quality can suffer, those are best avoided but with an increase in the parts budget the quality quickly climbs and then levels off.

The whole power gain section is point to point wiring, the pre stage has a circuit board, as do the 2 VU meters. Over the years I replaced the 2 power caps and the bridge rectifier. When I use it I connect a Velleman kit valve pre-amp to it, and even after all these years it sounds quite acceptable. But as you well know whether or not something sounds good or bad is very much a personal experience.

Some people swear by Garrard 's and Thorens turntables, but they're not for me. Wilson Audio is very highly thought of, but the sound of their speakers drives me up the walls. I still hook up the PL every once in a while for shits and giggles, but I think my Musical fidelity is a lot better. Get what you like after you hear it. Board index.

Phase Linear 400 Power Amplifier Fixed Price Repair And Restoration Service

I've recently acquired a Phase Linear This was an historically important audio amp, as it was the first of the wave of high-powered amplifiers that came out of the 's. This unit, though, has been through some tough times. I've found lots of shorted and fried components, but the main difficulty is in the output transistors. There are four different types plugged in to the sixteen TO-3 sockets. The outputs are four composite-Darlington transistors, each having a single driver feeding three paralleled output transistors. Someone in the past replaced some of the paralleled outputs with various types. So, I don't trust the types of transistors I see there. Also, I don't know what the original drivers were. Output types: GE, PL The first is clearly inappropriate in this application, and the second is apparently a Fairchild special part number for Phase Linear.

It was designed to complement all high quality bookshelf speaker systems in the efficient to medium efficiency range. The Model produces a minimum of watts per channel and, typical of all Phase Linear amplifiers, the has a power supply designed to make additional voltage available for brief periods which further reduces clipping.

To keep the cost of the relay boards as low as possible, the input jacks are no longer supplied unless requested at the time of ordering.
