That linked room gain article is spot on. Been using dual PB in my 12ft sealed room for years now and my take on them mirrors your findings. I started with one and if allowed it would shake the walls. Added the 2nd to help smooth the response but found the biggest difference was with bass in music using an 80Hz XO.

For testing low-frequency bass response, the track "Death Row" by Chris Stapleton seems to contain a lot of low-frequency energy. Below is the result of a spectrum analysis.
The track contains a lot of energy across the frequency band from 32 Hz to 72 Hz, with a strong peak at 36 Hz. I wonder how the PB subwoofer would have sounded when playing this track.
