1971 Ampeg Portaflex B-15N "Fliptop" Amp

Are there any Ampeg experts out there that can advise me which speaker I should be using in an old B15 flip top, I bought this without a speaker and loaded it with a JBL K, but it sounds a bit thin to my ears. I might be tempted to contact Andy Baxter as he sells plenty of them and many with non-standard speakers.
You might find some information here, as far as I am aware, different models, or years of manufacture, used different speakers. I had like 30 B15N's in my life. Those all "official upgrade" speakers ampeg offered for B15 JBL, Altec and EV [in the late 70s] were "hi-fi" upgrades with extended clarity and upper frequency spectrum so that's why it may sound "thin" to your ears at first.
They handled more power and they were cleaner. B15Ns preamp has broad tone control, so you can easily dial the high end back I once owned the 60W BS, version of this classic amp, really regret selling, loved how it sounded, and it was just loud enough to be used in a loud playing rock band.
Unfortunately I can't help you though, since I have no idea which speaker unit my flip top cab was actually equipped with. You need an efficient driver because of the limited power such as the JBL you have , but efficient drivers can be not so great for bass, especially in a cab which is just a plain box, such as you have with your B Why not ask Bill Fitzmaurice for suggestions? The unit will never be a bass pounding monster 'cos of the small size of the speaker box. It is, however, a wonderful amplifier and handles everything my six string basses can throw at it. And got to be about the most cool looking amp ever made as well. Got it amazingly cheap in the mid 90's from a local 2nd hand music instrument and gear shop. Regret so much selling it.

The unit, however, may not have started with Ampeg may very well have used or as the starting point during slow production periods. Nevertheless, for dating purposes, the serial number provides adequate information during this period. Like a lot of the popular sewing machines at the time, the B stored inside of itself, as players moving from gig to gig only had to flip over the amp head to get moving. Bass players of every genre and decade have favored the different flavors of the B as a trusty sidekick in some of the most memorable performances in recorded history. Motown fixture and demigod James Jamerson used a B for all of his live performances as well as the majority of his non-Motown sessions in Los Angeles.

I wrote this page originally to help me sell my classic Ampeg BN Portaflex flip-top combo bass amplifier. I've sold the amp, but I leave this page around for Ampeg fans who might want to take a look at it. I sold the amp because I'm not a tube amp kind of guy; these days I'm more of a small and lightweight amp kind of guy, and I haven't used it much since the early '80s when I bought a Polytone Mini-Brute III , and I have since moved on from that. I hope it's having a better life than it did in my basement!

After seeing the excellent post recently about the homebuilt Fender Combo on the forum, I thought that I should put a link here to my home brew Ampeg B15 bass amplifier and speaker which I made some time ago. After a bit of research I found some details on the net of a build which met my spec. I also added a hum balance pot to the design. I'm very pleased with the result and have used the Ampeg at a small local gig which I do regularly.
