Yeah, sure…. That last point is a bit of a pain — I mean, I can see that Denon intends this unit to be used with its own amplifiers, receivers or mini-systems, but a variable-level analogue output would open up the DAUSB for use straight into a power amplifier or even with active loudspeakers. As it was, I tried the Denon with my own amplification and systems, as well as with a rather fine pair of active speakers review coming soon complete with their own volume controls, which required some juggling of levels but delivered an impressive taste of what could have been.
Missed opportunity, Denon…. Independent master clock crystals for Completing the package is an external plug-top power supply, while the DAC itself has a switchable auto-standby function. In use, the Denon delivers what can safely be described — and I choose my words carefully there — as a very Denon sound. However, the DAUSB never sounds dull or uninteresting; rather the balance here keeps things smooth, controlled and assured, while still revealing plenty of detail in fine recordings and giving a very mature listen.
What this DAC does is bring out the fine detail in high-quality recordings — those subtly audible cues so informative about the studio or location acoustic, the position of the performers within it and so on — while at the same time flattering the rougher stuff with the warmth and generosity of its presentation.
The headphone provision here is far from being a makeweight, to the point that it would actually be worth buying the Denon DAC even if all you ever wanted to use it for was as a headphone amplifier, making the line-level capability the icing on the cake, rather than the cake itself.
Could one really ask for much more? Written by Andrew Everard. Nice presentation. Any thoughts about it? So the Meridian has convenience on its side, but I suspect the Denon would better it on flexibility.
The only review I could find was on Amazon Germany, and yes that person seems to have a problem with the build. Thanks for the quick answer. So the build is fine, just his model had a problem i guess. I dont have any experience with Denon yet so i was curios. If so, would the standard iPhone cable suffice?

I 'm a music critic and I love good sound quality, but I don't think it's always necessary. Music is made for different purposes and places: pop for whinnying out of a radio on a hot summer's day, hip-hop for distorting out of a rolled-down car window. But lots of digitally downloadable music does sound fairly shoddy — the price we pay for convenience. Digital-to-analogue converters promise to change this, however. The market is becoming crowded with them. What Hi-Fi? But what do they do? DACs add analogue signals to digital data, magically making compressed files sound uncompressed — giving your crappy computer files an aural makeover. A slinky piece of kit with minimal controls — an on-off switch, a volume dial, a touch-screen button to switch between inputs — it is very simply, rather sexily, hi-tech. Attach your headphones or an amp, and it acts as a huge, external soundcard.

Denon has thoughtfully included a stand that allows horizontal or vertical placement for those short on space, with its OLED display adjusting automatically for each position. The bright OLED display will then show the source selected and the music bitrate. Squeezing such high-end tech into a device at this price is admirable and shows in its performance, which is assured and well balanced. Play Angels by The xx through our reference system via coaxial and the wonderfully stripped-back production is handled beautifully, with the vocals front and centre, full of expression and emotion. The DAUSB is on the relaxed side in its character though, meaning it can lack the impact and edge needed for more lively tracks. Timing can feel off compared to the best, and bass kicks are on the soft side. If your music is of a heavy sort, there are better options.

It has been tested and is in full working order. The amp is mostly in very good condition but there is a small bend to one of the rear rack ears please see photos. Not only is it nicely constructed and attractively styled, but it's the added flexibility of allowing itself to be placed vertically or horizontally, including a good amount of flexibility when setting it beside a hifi or desktop computer system. Helpfully, the screen vehicle flips to the location that is proper according to its positioning also. Taking the Denon's power from a wall-wart transformer provides the DAUSB a sound edge in terms that are hifi on many hub-powered versions in this round upwards.
