Thoughts on Magneplanar MGIIB Speakers?

My first question would be why you would even consider buying 20 year old speakers you don't know anything about? With old Maggies there can be tears in the membrane from wear. And the wires on the membrane can have gotten loose.

At least that's what I think could be the case. I'm really looking in to Magnepan as I am thinking of buying the 1. The speakers are my bosses that he used for his home stereo. About 5 years ago he put them into storage and hasnt used them since. He said when he put them in storage they were in perfect working condition. So i do know something about them, sorry, i should have made that apparant. He said they would be really cheap if I wanted them, provided they arent damaged, of course.

Ill take your advice into consideration though when examining for damage though, thanks. It required two rebuilds--one the late 80s and one in the late 90s he gave them away this year to a friend. IMO, they could fail at any moment given their age, even if they weren't used much over their lifetime.

Maintenance issues, yes there's the potential for that! A fairly handy owner can perform a surprisingly big rebuild, but it's labor-intensive.

The trick to very quickly determining if something is wrong is to play some music with heavy bass notes reggae ought to work fine : If you hear odd buzzes, that's a sign of loose wires not to be confused with the sound of a Maggie bottoming out at high listening levels. And of course if it REALLY sounds rolled of, it's time to lay down some new tweeter wires 'cause the aluminum wire used doesn't last forever.

Does anyone have any experience with these speakers - are they good? Joseph Oberlander. Uptown Audio. They will in all probability need new membranes and that would off-set their cost.

They also behave differently from regular dynamic loudspeakers and you may find them not to be as cool as the initial thought once all is said and done. As if that wasn't enough, buy them from your boss?

What are you thinking?! I can't think any any good scenarios arising from a problem with the transaction. All that considered, I would pass. Jason Kau. Harry Lavo. All that. When new, those were very decent speakers but sound their best well away from the back or side walls, and always did sound kind of rolled-off in the upper frequencies, though with use and aclimatization, you get used to it. Later variations of the MGII incorporated ribbon tweeters, but I didn't like these at all, as I thought they weren't a good sonic match.

I had a pair Okay on acoustic, low-dynamics. But those thin little wires on the membranes are vulnerable to corrosion breaks when old. The 1.

The Audio Board

Their loudspeaker technology was conceived and implemented by engineer Jim Winey in Magnepan's speaker design, sold under the brand name Magneplanar often referred to as "Maggies" , differs from that of conventional speakers in relying not on cones mounted in an enclosure, but on a planar driver system mounted in a panel. A Magneplanar's reproducing mechanism magnetostatic loudspeaker comprises thin conductive wires and or foil strips attached to a thin sheet of Mylar residing in a magnetic field created by a vertical array of permanent strip magnets. When an electric signal is applied to the conductors, the resultant electric current moving through the magnetic field applies a force to the wires or tape, moving the Mylar film sheet, which projects sound as a dipole. In principle, this approach relies on the same concept as a voice coil -driven cone speaker, but in a Magneplanar speaker the "voice coils" are attached glued directly to the radiating surface. Since the force is applied only to the voice coil in a cone speaker, there are distortion modes called cone breakup; in the magneplanar speakers the force is applied much more evenly over the radiating surface, resulting in fewer distortion modes. Sound is projected from both the front and back of the radiating surface. The sound from the back of the speaker is reflected from the front wall of the listening area. This is said to effectively enhance the soundstage — the sense of space and realism — of the speaker.

These speakers are being offered as-is. They are working well and sound phenomenal with one small exception. I listened to a wide variety of music at loud volumes before finding a track that produced this issue. It was an XX song

Planar-magnetic loudspeaker. The Planar-magnetic driver. It consists in a large planar magnetic area of permanent magnetic field with a very thin. To the low mass mylar diaphragm are attached two long aluminum wires one of more large diameter for mid-bass section and the other of lesser diameter for the high section. Magnepan owners, please tell me what you have and Can you help me remember the name of the guy that mods While Magnepan's idea was that by giving the consumer a taste of their offerings at a greatly reduced price, that would lead to a definite trade-up to the more expensive Magneplanars. And that has happened, quite a lot, actually. But so many felt that with modifications, the smaller MMGs could compete favorably with much more expensive ones The ST is a definite lightweight with a measly two output devices per channel.
