After a few seconds up high still sounded amazing by the way the sound cut out all together. The head unit is still working fine though so I assumed it was just a fuse or the amp. I've checked both fuse boxes and all seem fine. I had a look around the amp but can't see a fuse.

Could there be one on the back of the head unit? I just pulled the amp right out and there are no fuses or reset buttons on it. I'll try taking the headunit out tomorrow and look at the back of that. Although as you say it doubtful it'll be that because its lighting up and playing ok. If you have an amp, then if it was installed properly, there would be a fuse under the bonnet next to the battery for the power cable to the amp. Yeah I've checked every fuse I can find in both the under bonnet fuse box and the one by the drivers right knee.

I then opened it up and to my delight found a 25amp fuse inside. Hurray, I thought but it wasn't blown. There was no signs of overheating inside and no other damage either so now I'm really pulling my hair out. Is the head unit going straight to the amp? If yes you need to check if the head unit is still working, so u need to disconnect the head unit from the amp and plug a speaker into the head unit and see if you got sound.

If you have no sound going to a speaker then you have blow a on board fuse in the head unit. If there is sound comming out of the head unit then the amp fuse has gone and once again more likley a onboard fuse. I don't know alot about car audio I'm afraid but surely the headunit only emits pre-amp outs therefore you wouldn't hear it before it goes through the amp? Anyway, not too sure what you mean by "straight to the amp". Its just the standard McIntosh system if that helps.

On the back of the head unit there are strangely two thick black arial leads and another thick black wire. There is also a bunch of wires approx 10 coming out which I took to be the speaker wires but not sure why these would be needed?

Surely the speakers are fed off the amp? On the amp there is just a thick black wire pluged in with approx 10pin round connector and the 8 speaker wires coming out. As I've already checked the fuse on board the amp I'd like to think its now a fuse inside the head unit but surely this would stop the head unit "working" all together?

I just find it so hard to belive they'd fit all this kit without adding an external fuse somewhere. Yes but if you open the stereo you will prob not see the fuse because its like a resistor. Not like the fuses your looking for. From the stereo the back should be 2 x of the same colours ie 2 x purple , 2 x white etc. These are normaly your speaker wires. If you put a speaker to one pair of wires you be able to try and see if sound is comming out of the stereo.

Well I've removed the head unit and opened it up but no sign of any fuses nor are there any of the circuit board type fuses that I can see. I tried connecting a speaker to the speaker outputs on the head unit but nothing could be heard. I expected this anyway as I don't think the head unit has an amp built in?.

Where do you live? Your profile doesn't show it; maybe someone on here who lives nearby can help you. Norwich in Norfolk. I had a similar problem to this with my Macintosh System - when I had the volume turned up to the very last you could barely hear the radio. Had a nightmare of a time trying to find the fault. Tried everything, opened up the radio, the amp, fuses etc to no avail. When i tried to fit that i relaised that all the speakers were running through the amp and ended up having to rewire each speaker.

I tried applying direct 12v to a couple of the thicker looking wires in the 16 block connected but only suceeded in melting the wire and burning my fingers. You can post now and register later. If you have an account, sign in now to post with your account.
