The 12 Most Significant Loudspeakers of All Time

David, aka Grumpy, needs our help. Great news. David is home! It was quite the ordeal to get him home and into the house, but it is done. Thank you to everyone for their support.

Now a long road ahead to get him back on his feet and functioning normally. I have started a GoFundMe to help with the medical bills. Please help, if you can. Discussion in ' Speakers ' started by Brian , Feb 20, Log in or Sign up. I need help hooking up an AR-2ax tweeter. Messages: You see, I've finished rebuilding the crossover in one of the AR-2ax speakers i'm rebuilding because the previous owner 'upgraded' it with cheap-ass drivers.

I followed Onplane's modified schematic and I think I have everything ready to go. Only one thing in my way--the previous owner also clipped the leads that used to run to the tweeter binding posts that stick out of the front of the cabinet.

I know that the tiny little leads from the tweeter go straight down to the posts. What I don't know is which post does the black wire go to and which does the yellow wire go to. Can anyone offer any help? Brian , Feb 20, Messages: 2, Location: Rochester, NY. Wow, it's important that you get this right or your drivers will be out of phase.

I just don't remember how many terminals do you have that migrate from inside the cabinet to the front? The woofer also has to be correct. You can check it with the battery test. Regards, Jerry. I wish I could find some hint There's only two of those posts on the AR I checked the terminals on the inside of the cabinet and they were cut clean--not even a scrap of insulation from which I could make an educated guess.

Also, the phenolic tweeters I have don't seem to have a marking for the positive side. Of course, they could have just scraped against something red sometime between and today. Its just these darn tweeters that are giving me fits. If I got them out of phase, how could I tell? I'd hate to do it, but I could do trial and error. Brian , Feb 21, Well, on the tweeters can you tell whether you are wiring them the same way??

That is, are there any consistent marks on the tweeters that could give an indication of polarity. If the tweeters are out of phase with each other, you'll get random cancellation as you walk around the room over the entire frequency range of the tweeters. If the tweeters are out of phase with the mid range, you'll get cancellation at the frequencies near the xover.

Now, Brian, neither situation is good. Whether you would be able to hear any difference is another story. So little energy is put out by the tweeters, that you may not be able to hear any difference. The good news is you can wire the inside posts make sure you wire the speakers consistently , and then experiment by switching the tweeter leads outside to see which way sounds the best. The key here, Brian, is to be able to position the tweeters in a consistent fashion.

That is, you really want the tweeters in phase with each other. Regars, Jerry. There's some red pencil marks on the left sides of the tweeters that appear to be original.

I hooked it up with the black on the left and yellow on the right, just like the picture I found over on Carl's Custom Loudspeakers page. If you look carefully, it looks like yellow is going to the right and black to the left.

That's what I did. Brian , Feb 22, Of course, now that I've hooked them up and everything, a couple of people have suggested to me that the wires actually go the other way around.

I dunno. I guess on the up side, its an easy issue to fix if I do have it wrong. Brian, it's almost irrelevant how you hook up the yellow and black wire, because you have no way to insure that you have the tweeters positioned correctly. More important that wiring according to stock is that you wire consistently! Then, when you try difference connections to the tweeters you at least know both tweeters are wired the same.

Is there any printing or stamps on the tweeters?? Anything to know how to orient them identically in the cabinet? Then when you attempt to try the alternate wiring you end up with: 1. So you're saying that there is one 'right hand' tweeter and one 'left hand' tweeter? Maybe I'm not understanding. Its not unusual. I was planning on hooking up the same wire coming off the crossover to the same lead out of the tweeter in both cabinets.

I was assuming that this would have the tweeters wired identically. The ones I have are a set pulled out of a pair of AR-2ax speakers and kept together. They look identical and are marked with nearly identical dates. If the polarity of the leads is different, there is no way to distinguish them. My guess would be the tweeters are identical. That is, your assumption is correct. They are circles, however, so is there a way for you to orient them and be sure they oriented exactly the same way in the cabinets?

If so wire them up One of the two wiring options should produce more sound in the to Hz range. Regards, Jerry PS: Ozmoid's pic below seems to show the black on the left with the yellow on the right. I'm going to orient them so that the two little leads that come out of the little dome are headed straight down toward the spring connectors. Once I get the second one hooked back up, I'll try to see what I can do about listening to them. Hopefully, my ears can distinguish a drop-out in the range you describe.

I'm guessing it will just sound like something is 'missing'. Perhaps, I'll see if I can figure a way to use my computer as either a source of test input or, with a microphone, as a way to analyze the output. I should be finished up, for better or worse in a couple of days. With the electrical stuff at least, the refinishing will take another few days. Yep, that's what I would do! If you look above I re-posted one of ozmoid's pics and it too seems to show the black lead on the left with the yellow on the right.

Regards, Jerry It's below again, only I rotated the pic so we can see the left - right better. It sure does look like the way I have mine hooked up. That's a positive thing. Thanks for all your help. Read times. Picked up a pair of AR-4X speakers today Wayner Full Member Posts: » Systems. I have been looking for a nice pair for several years now. I used to own a pair of AR-2ax and AR-5 speakers and eventually, they went away in one trade or another audiophile disease. So today, that very rare opportunity came to be. The AR-4x was the least expensive in the AR line, consisting of an 8" woofer and a 2. It's smallish size 19 X 10 X 9 put it really in the "bookshelf" category and, I believe it was literally designed to be put on a bookshelf horizontally.

A few months ago, I posted some woofer measurements. Pete B. After a few months of major changes, I am reporting more measurements. I have a pair of the "new" AR-2ax speakers with badges that read "AR-2xa". I decided that I would replace the mid and tweeter with some modern drivers and tri-amp the system. I settled on a 4.

Acoustic Research was a Cambridge, Massachusetts -based company that manufactured high-end audio equipment. The brand is now owned by VOXX. Acoustic Research was known for the AR-3 series of speaker systems, which used the 12 in mm acoustic suspension woofer of the AR-1 with newly designed dome mid-range speaker and high-frequency drivers. AR's line of acoustic suspension speakers were the first loudspeakers with relatively flat response, extended bass , wide dispersion, small size, and reasonable cost.
