Compatible amplifier bose 901 stands

By tysontom , February 21, in Bose. I just learned that the Bose is no longer being made available from Bose Corporation. This would be the end of a glorious year run for this fine old speaker, and it's probably safe to say that if founder Amar Bose were still alive, no one would dare discontinue this model regardless of low the sales volume! This is sad news, but nothing is forever, at least after the founder of the company has died. Let me add that the discontinuation of the may have occurred over a year ago. It looks like it may have happened back in September, !

Bose 901 Series IV Floorstanding Speakers

Hey a pair of 's sound good when used correctly? Mallette 10 posts. July 20, I doubt if the vast majority have actually heard a pair. The was their best product. I have been a Klipsch "fan," to use the description of some other contributors to this thread, for many years.

Up until a couple of years ago, Klipschorns were locked firmly in the corners of a. July 21, I'm also familiar with the myself. I've owned 2 pairs of 's in my life time. I actually used them for PA duties in worship halls over the 's. The - when set up properly no t. Up until a couple of years ago, Klipschorns were locked firmly in the corners of a 21' X 16' room, and in that setup provided the most uncanny and laser-like imaging of any loudspeaker Imhave owned or heard.

The Klispschorns, as the La Scalas that preceeded them, were driven by amnumber of different amplifiers -- single-ended triodes 2a3, B, 45 , single-ended pentode, push-pull pentode, class A transistor, single-ended OTL output transformerless , push-pull OTL, and so on.

Virtually all of the valve amplifiers were built rebuilt by me over the past 20 years or so. We currently own a very nice pair of industrial trapezoid La Scalas, being driven at different times by one of the amps mentioned above. In addition to two pair of Heresies, our second system consists of a large pair of rear-loaded horns that use in each cab a single Lowther PM5A alnico driver the drivers alone cost approx. This Lowther system is slightly more efficient than Klpschorns and La Scalas, and are extemely fast in terms of transient speed and clarity.

I have also had very, very promising results using them on an open baffle, with the La Scala bass bin positions reversed and wired out-out-of phase with a crossover at about cps using a single series choke and bi-amped with an integrated amp I built to balance gain with that of the horns.

Prior to either Klipsch or Lowthers, I was building woofer tweeter boxes along with their necessary crossovers for years, experimenting with a variety of crossover topoogies and slopes -- finding in almost all cases I prefer the sound of very simple, first order designs. I prefer to avoid compensation or equalization filters notch, zobel, etc.

All of this leads up to what I want to share about the Bose properly set up and connected to their purpose-designed EQ, and with a strong, clean amplifier in front of them, the can sound truly stunningly good. I have invested significant time with them, and in fact own a pair of series VI s right now. It was said above that the was their best product.

Certainly we might agree that it is hard for any, simgle person to state universally that anything is "best" without qualifiying that statement as being personal and subjective. The phrase "No highs, no lows, must be Bose" leads me to think that whomever adheres to such a statement may not have set the speakers correctly.

They can in fact sound painfully bright or decidedly dull if not balanced correctly. Our s arguably sound their best facing straight into the room, with the single driver facing forward and the eight on the rear facing the back wall. As a current owner of La Scalas, and as someone who has played drums in both progressive rock and small jazz ensembles, my opinion of the s is that they are able to play both very loud and with a very clean, undistorted, and highly engaging sound that is devoid of neither highs nor lows.

Are they "better" than La Scalas? They are certainly different, and I appreciate the virtues of both equally. I have read here and elswhere that any system that requires EQ on speakers to sound good is an example of very poor design. Going on that same line of thinking, one might also say that any system that must rely on the use of frequency discriminating circuits whether the type A, AA, AL, extreme slope, etc is also an example of compromised design.

Remove the crossovers and see what happens, particulalrly if you are using the K77 tweeter. I first joined this forum in , and we tossed this topic around back then, too. And that's fine. They are entitled to their opinions as we all are. I had a pair of Series IV a few years ago that sounded very, very good. I ran the Bose with a heavily modded Sansui AU I was running Belles and JBL a at the time in my main system, so the had some stiff competition.

I also have had a couple of Series 1 Sold the I recently received and promptly sold a pair of They never made it into the house. The little woman still has a pair of on her desk along with JBL all powered by a Sansui G as her computer system. I still prefer Bose original Quiet Comfort headphones for active life listening. I prefer them for the hard plastic case that has protected my ears from physical hazards. Properly set up, 's can sound good. Would I buy a pair of ?

Used them as surrounds in the early 90's. The actually through a big soundstage too when I tried them in 2 channel mode. The - when set up properly no toe-in can sound haunting, and they are capable of playing really loud! I agreed with the statement because of price vs performance. You are correct when you make the point - removing a speakers crossover would basically destroy it.

Every room is different so I come from the mind of "every room needs treatment - and then maybe eq". Did it because my wife kept putting furniture in front of my speakers Come to the spring gathering and you can make that comparison. Last years was King Klipschorn pretty much by acclamation. As to Bose s, they sound best when sitting disconnected on top of Klipschorns. The Bose s sound quite good hooked up correctly, Dave, but thanks for your contribution.

I remember your posts and our exchanges from more than a decade ago. We had talked at length about computer-based music servers among many other topics from the old days here. I hope your family is well. Erik M. Good Lord, Eric Awesome to hear from you again. Still in the Houston area? I have heard that under excellent conditions and high power they can sound good.

I don't really doubt it, but way too many conditions and violations of PWKs 8 Card which remains my commandments about speaker design. They were loud with a big soundstage. They needed high power to work. A return to impoverished student status forced a sale. Then I discovered Klipsch and horn loaded efficiency. Klipsch sensitivity is degrees from 's EQ'd inefficiency. The difference in efficiency is of course obvious. Pour Lowther horns are in fact slightly more efficient than were our former Klipschorns and current pair of La Scalas.

Moreover, The insertion losses associated with the EQ circuit are not unlike that associated with the passive Klipsch Heritage networks, and even more so with some of the available after-market modern offerings with the dense forests of inductors and capacitors needed to achieve extremely high-order crossover slopes; the last thing a single-ended triode all would like to see looking in front of it. What the Lowthers don't do is deep bass, though that can be very effectively augmented with a fast and judicially placed subwoofer.

I was also able to achieve outstanding results using the bass bins of our La Scalas on either side of the full-range Lowther using a low-pass filter in the range of a couple hundred Hz. Very seamless integration. While I greatly enjoy horns, surely we can agree that comparatively lower efficiency systems can be balanced in terms of power transfer by using suitably powerful amplification. So, again: I thoroughly enjoy our two very large and highly efficient horn systems.

However again with the right room about which Klipschorns are even more particular , and appropriate amplification, the Bose is capable of respectable and quite enjoyable sound reproduction.

I respond to what I hear, not the factory logo displayed on the front of the cabinet. For me, that is the key. Inefficient systems generally become more and more thin and distant as the volume goes down. That's a deal killer for me. In past years, the "Loudness" control, especially variable ones, could make up for this to a degree. No more. The only Bose sized speakers that work for me are mainly Fraziers due to the fact their high efficiencies make them still sound excellent over a wide range of volumes.

While Mods will fulfill requests to move posts we don't much like to edit others posts. You can do this yourself. You'll find "EDIT" in the lower right. Just cut the text and place it below the quote. Not sure what you were referring to, but no worries either way! I also like first order networks when possible. I did extensive experimenting with and without the autoformer, which as you said has the potential to bring certain subjective compromises.

Klipsch does not use them any more to the best of my knowledge -- unless that has changed. We ranted and raved about autoformers on this forum many years ago.
