Need help with crackling on Epiphone Pacemaker ea Thread starter joshw Start date Jul 7, Messages 5. I picked up a '62 Pacemaker EA 50 non tremolo two days ago and it has started to make a crackling noise when i play certain notes or I can only hear it on certain notes I think this might be the tubes going out.

I believe them to be original. Also will I have to bias them and where can i find out how to do that? One last thing. Where can I find these tubes!!! Messages Congratulations on a great amp! This one is easy to work on and you can learn a lot from it. If there is a 12AX7 in there, someone has probably rewired the amp for it. The intermittent crackling can be coming from a variety of sources. You could have a bad interstage cap or a cold solder joint or loose wire. It's kind of hard to say for sure what the problem areas might be until you have the tubes tested and know what you have.

The schematic is readily available from Schematic Heaven and EL34 world. These amps have a reputation for sounding thin and harsh when overdriven. Don't be too surprised if you find several undocumented changes in the chassis. Both Gibson and Epiphone have a reputation for "creative engineering" when it comes production amps. As long as you don't abuse them, they should last you a long time. To check the bias you should probably make or buy a bias checker plug.

He also tells you how to check you bias at the end of that page. Once you do it, you know forever. If your amp still has any static or crackle you might want to buy yourself a can of caigs deoxit cleaner and clean all the internal parts - sockets, caps, boards, potentiometers, etc.

Is the hum volume affected by the volume knob? These diagnostic steps can help pin down where the hum is originating. These Epiphone amps are very much like their Gibson Crestline cousins.

They share an identical schematic. On the outside they are styled a bit differently but they are the same. On the inside the circuit is laid out with some interesting differences. It is very helpful to acquire tube data sheets for the pinouts of each of the tubes. Then, with pinouts in hand and schematics nearby, you can identify the schematic components and check to verify them. I am advising you to do this for practical reasons.

Don't let anyone tell you "This is how they have to sound". I have found components in these amps that are not documented on the schematics and you would be surprised by their affect on the amp's performance. They are relatively cheap perhaps due to their thin tone and they are wired point-to-point. Do not let the simple design fool you. When they are wired as the schematic, debugged and provided a decent alnico speaker, they are potent little buggers.
