Expand sonos to non sonos speakers
Sonos basically invented the multi-room category of home audio, starting as a software company in the early s before integrating its Wi-Fi-enabled network into hardware a few years later. Its first amplifier which became the Connect:Amp and subsequent speakers were great, but the real beauty of Sonos is its ecosystem of audio products that make listening to music at home really easy. The magic of Sonos is the ability to group any number of Sonos speakers together, provided they are all connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and have them all playing in sync through out the house. Alternatively, they can all be playing different tunes if you'd like. And it's all controlled through a smartphone app. Imitation is the finest form of flattery, so, over the years, a lot of companies have tried to beat Sonos at its own game.

Come June, Sonos is splitting its ecosystem in two. Here’s what it means
Connecting any Sonos player to your router with an Ethernet cable automatically creates a dedicated Sonos wireless network. For many, the PLAY:1 will provide an incredible music experience with deep bass and plenty of power. Sonos can access any music files that are stored on a computer or network-attached-storage NAS drive.
Over 50, channels from every corner of the earth. Plus live and on-demand radio shows from around the world - all streaming direct to Sonos players throughout your house for free.
Service availability varies by region. Anytime you have an external source, such as a TV or CD player, connected to one unit in our system, that external source can be played throughout the entire system. Specifically, it shows up as an option under the line-in category of the music menu, and can be selected for playback in any room with a Sonos player. They can certainly be moved outside, but they are not designed to live outside unless they are in a covered space.
It is simple to set-up, control and expand throughout your home. The Connect: Amp is designed for a single pair of speakers- it is a stereo amplifier, right and left channel.
A single PLAY:5 will play sound in stereo - it has left and right speaker drivers built in. However, if you are looking for better stereo separation, you can use two PLAY:5's in a stereo pair.
This simple software toggle turns one speaker into a dedicated left and the other into a dedicated right. A single PLAY:3 will play sound in stereo - it has left and right speaker drivers built in. Where does the music come from? Not good enough? Do you make an outdoor speaker? Will Sonos work with my existing equipment? Can I connect Sonos to my TV? Can I use two speakers as a stereo pair? Which speaker is right for my room? How loud do you like to listen? Will you be listening in front of the speaker, or do you want to fill the room with music? If so, how big is your room? How high is your ceiling?
How open is your space? The louder you listen, or the bigger the space you want to fill, the more likely you will want a speaker with more power. Choose PLAY:5 for maximum power and the deepest bass. Choose a stereo pair of PLAY:1s to create a wider sound stage, allowing every vocal and instrument to be heard more discretely.

Use sonos speakers in a non sonos system

Your Sonos surround sound speakers are designed to provide you with ambient background channels when watching TV content meaning the volume of the rear speakers are generally slightly quieter than the front. Ambient mode means when you are watching TV, the surrounds act as rear speakers, but when listening to music, they remain quite ambient as surround speakers, which is not ideal for music. We find that you get a much better experience when switching to Full mode.
3 ways to expand your Sonos system
Sonos is the biggest name in multi-room audio. Sure, the likes of Amazon's Echo range and Apple's HomePod have added some much needed mainstream competition, but Sonos is still the name that regular folk associate with sorting a multi-room speaker setup for their homes. Sonos is so simple to set up, whether you want one speaker, a stereo-pair, or in-sync speakers in various rooms; and the array of playback options is staggering — think local storage, streaming services, internet radio, TV audio and more. Cost-wise, there are better priced options, but you're certainly getting what you pay for in terms of performance with Sonos. It does lack somewhat on the smart home front, compared to its dedicated smart speaker rivals , but that's an area where it's continuously improving — not only with its own Alexa-packing speakers , but now with Google Assistant support too, along with other platforms like AirPlay. Sonos now even has a couple of Bluetooth speakers in its line-up; something you would have never believed a few years ago. It can be daunting deciding which are the best Sonos speakers to invest in, but we've got you covered there with our guide below.
The Complete Sonos Buying Guide: Every Speaker, Soundbar and Amp Explained

I also have a sonos one, where I want to be able to tell alexa to do all the functions I previously listed, through sonos app. The Port cannot control your receiver. It can do limited control of some Onkyo and Pioneer units, like switching to the Sonos input when you start playing Sonos and controlling volume from the Sonos app, but no other abilities. So you may want to do a bit more research around those. The catch for you is that your devices need to be controlled through a network connection to the device which works for Sonos and several other devices or an IR connection, same as the device remote.
Add a Surround Speaker or Sub to a Sonos Home Theater
I have an amp and wired speakers and play music through a sirius xm player, plugged into the amp. I would like to be able to add the sonos one speakers to this setup. Best answer by melvimbe 3 March , The answer depends on how you want to use the Sonos One speakers. If you need the Ones and your existing amp to play in sync though, you would again need the Sonos port If you using the Sonos app to source XM audio , you actually can put the Ones and your amp in the same room as everything will play with the same delay. If is does, then local sources wired to the amp can be fed out to the Port and back again, thus delaying the signal by the same amount as the sound from the Ones.
Sonos: everything you need to know
By Steve May TZ. Looking to spend your money on the best Sonos speaker? Sonos is the first brand name many of us look to when it comes to whole-home audio systems — and with good reason. Outside of a working Wi-Fi network, you only need follow a few simple instructions to get your party started. With a Sonos wireless music system, you can stream tunes from Spotify, Amazon HD, Tidal, Deezer or Qobuus the list goes on , to either a single Sonos speaker or specified zones of multiple Sonos speakers. You want Harry Styles simultaneously in the living room and kitchen? No problem!
The Sonos Arc is an outstanding soundbar, on its own or with friends
Having focused on wireless speakers for the past few years, Sonos has returned to its roots with its latest product: the Sonos Amp. In fact, the Sonos Amp goes further, offering a number of features from the Sonos Beam , making it surprisingly well suited to movie as well as music use. Certainly, if you want the best-sounding and most feature-laden Sonos available, this is it; but the Sonos Amp also has a different set of expectations and rivals to its siblings, and that makes things a little more complicated. In fact, by volume, the Amp is marginally smaller than the older model.

The Sonos Move is a great speaker but it might not be for you. If you already are a part of or plan on joining the Sonos ecosystem then this is a great addition to your setup. Not many brands have crossed over into pop culture so successfully. For years name Sonos has been the company to beat when it comes to home audio. But how does that apply once you leave the house?
