I have a Hafler DH that I built from the kit many years ago. I saw and heard it before I bought, but did not like it after building it and seeing what was on the inside. It was designed around the time when poly and low ESR electrolytic caps were coming into use and uses some in the signal path and power supply. However, there are 3 electrolytics in the signal path for each channel of the line stage. The phono section also has electrolytics caps, there are uF caps as emitter resistor shunts. I used this DH on and off over the last 10 years or so and recently it started putting out what seemed to be a full rail pulse on power up. This went away after using it, could be an electrolytic cap that reformed, don't know. Electrolytics in the line stage aren't necessarily bad or evil as it really depends on the overall design of the unit. For comparison only, my Heathkit AA amps have one electrolytic in the line imput stage per channel.

The Hafler DH was a pretty decent preamp for its price particularly if you bought the kit and assembled it yourself. It was hardly the last word in transparency or imaging, but it had decent dynamics and was musically accurate. The DH was a much better preamp that its immediate predecessor, the DH But there is another soft spot for me in the Hafler DH Out of production since about , but still my all-time favorite for its inexistent noise, its flat-neutral-wide frequency response and natural delivery, as well as its out-of-league acceptance level.

Hello all. Before I throw in the towel on this problem, I thought I would run it by all the pros here. What I have is a Hafler DH preamp that has a loud pop when the tone circuit is activated.
