What is an 3 Phase Induction Motor? Diagram, Working & Types
Facebook Twitter. Three Phase Induction Motor:. The three phase induction motors are the most widely used electric motors in the industry. They run at essentially constant speed from no-load to full-load.
However, the speed is frequency dependent and consequently, these motors are not easily adapted to speed control. We usually prefer dc motors when large speed variations are required. Nevertheless, the 3-phase induction motors are simple, rugged, low-priced, easy to maintain and can be manufactured with characteristics to suit most industrial requirements.
In this, we shall discuss working principle of 3-phase induction motors. Like any electric motor, a 3-phase induction motor has a stator and a rotor.
The stator carries a 3-phase winding called stator winding while the rotor carries a short-circuited winding called rotor winding. Only the stator winding is fed from 3-phase supply. The rotor winding derives its voltage and power from the externally energized stator winding through electromagnetic induction and hence the name. Stator :. It consists of a steel frame which encloses a hollow, cylindrical core made up of thin laminations of silicon steel to reduce hysteresis and eddy current losses.
A number of evenly spaced slots are provided on the inner periphery of the laminations. The insulated connected to form a balanced 3-phase star or delta connected the circuit. The 3-phase stator winding is wound for a definite number of poles as per requirement of speed. Greater the number of poles, lesser is the speed of the motor and vice-versa.
When 3-phase supply is given to the stator winding, a rotating magnetic field See Sec. This rotating field induces currents in the rotor by electromagnetic induction. The rotor, mounted on a shaft, is a hollow laminated core having slots on its outer periphery. The winding placed in these slots called rotor winding may be one of the following two types:. One copper or aluminum bar is placed in each slot. All these bars are joined at each end by metal rings called end rings.
This forms a permanently short circuited winding which is indestructible. The entire construction bars and end rings resembles a squirrel cage and hence the name. The rotor is not connected electrically to the supply but has current induced in it by transformer action from the stator.
Those induction motors which employ squirrel cage rotor are called squirrel cage induction motors. Most of 3 phase induction motors use squirrel cage rotor as it has a remarkably simple and robust construction enabling it to operate in the most adverse circumstances.
However, it suffers from the disadvantage of a low starting torque. It is because the rotor bars are permanently short-circuited and it is not possible to add any external resistance to the rotor circuit to have a large starting torque. The rotor winding is uniformly distributed in the slots and is usually star-connected. The open ends of the rotor winding are brought out and joined to three insulated slip rings mounted on the rotor shaft with one brush resting on each slip ring.
The three brushes are connected to a 3-phase star-connected rheostat as shown in Fig. At starting, the external resistances are included in the rotor circuit to give a large starting torque. These resistances are gradually reduced to zero as the motor runs up to speed. The external resistances are used during starting period only.
When the motor attains normal speed, the three brushes are short-circuited so that the wound rotor runs like a squirrel cage rotor. Speed of rotating magnetic field:. The speed at which the rotating magnetic field revolves is called the synchronous speed Ns. Referring to Fig. At a time instant represented by 13 or one complete cycle of current Ix from the origin, the field has completed one revolution.
Therefore, for a 2-pole stator winding, the field makes one revolution in one cycle of current. In a 4-pole stator winding, it can be shown that the rotating field makes one revolution in two cycles of current. The speed of the rotating magnetic field is the same as the speed of the alternator that is supplying power to the motor if the two have the same number of poles.
Hence the magnetic flux is said to rotate at synchronous speed. Three Phase Induction Motor Advantages:. Three Phase Induction Motor Disadvantages:. If you have any queries please comment below. The popularity of 3 phase induction motors onboard ships is because of their simple, robust construction, and high-reliability factor in the sea environment. An induction motor can be used for different applications with various speed and load requirements. Induction motors are used in almost all machinery system of the ship such as crane motor, propulsion motor, blower motor, seawater pump motor, and even small synchronous motor. An induction motor or asynchronous motor is an AC motor in which the electric current in the rotor needed to produce torque is obtained by electromagnetic induction from the magnetic field of the stator winding. Single-phase induction motor: As the name suggests, this type of motor is supplied with single-phase power supply. AC current is carried in the main winding of the motor. The type of single-phase induction motor used depends on the starting arrangement they use as an auxiliary as they are not self-starting.
Identifying Wye or Delta with an Ohmmeter
Three-phase electric power is a common method of electric power transmission. It is a type of polyphase system mainly used to power motors and many other devices. A three-phase system uses less conductor material to transmit electric power than equivalent single-phase , two-phase, or direct-current systems at the same voltage. In a three-phase system, three circuit conductors carry three alternating currents of the same frequency which reach their instantaneous peak values at different times. Taking one conductor as the reference, the other two currents are delayed in time by one-third and two-thirds of one cycle of the electrical current. This delay between "phases" has the effect of giving constant power transfer over each cycle of the current, and also makes it possible to produce a rotating magnetic field in an electric motor. Three phase systems may or may not have a neutral wire. A neutral wire allows the three phase system to use a higher voltage while still supporting lower voltage single phase appliances. In high voltage distribution situations it is common not to have a neutral wire as the loads can simply be connected between phases phase-phase connection.

The three-phase induction electric motor, as well as any electric motor , consists of two main parts - the stator and the rotor. The stator is a stationary part, the rotor is a rotating part. Usually, the rotor is located inside the stator. There is a small distance between the rotor and the stator, called an air gap, typically 0. The stator consists of an outer frame and a core with windings.

The three-phase induction motor is a preferable type of motor. It is mostly used in industrial drives because it is very reasonable and vigorous, economical and reliable. It is also called asynchronous motor because it does not run at a synchronous speed. The induction motor requires very little maintenance and also it has high overloading capacity. A three-phase Induction motor mainly consists of two parts called the Stator and the Rotor. The stator is the stationary part of the induction motor, and the rotor is the rotating part.
AC motors are simple to control, rugged, and cost effective for general purpose applications. These reasons are why they are the most popular type of electric motor across various industries. In this post, we will briefly introduce induction motors and demonstrate how to operate these motors.
An induction motor or asynchronous motor is an AC electric motor in which the electric current in the rotor needed to produce torque is obtained by electromagnetic induction from the magnetic field of the stator winding. Three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors are widely used as industrial drives because they are self-starting, reliable and economical. Single-phase induction motors are used extensively for smaller loads, such as household appliances like fans. Although traditionally used in fixed-speed service, induction motors are increasingly being used with variable-frequency drives VFD in variable-speed service. VFDs offer especially important energy savings opportunities for existing and prospective induction motors in variable-torque centrifugal fan, pump and compressor load applications. Squirrel-cage induction motors are very widely used in both fixed-speed and variable-frequency drive applications.
Ed Edwards. Three-phase motors also annotated numerically as 3-phase motors are widely used in industry and have become the workhorse of many mechanical and electromechanical systems because of their relative simplicity, proven reliability, and long service life. Three-phase motors are one example of a type of induction motor, also known as an asynchronous motor, that operates using the principals of electromagnetic induction. While there are also single-phase induction motors available, those types of induction motors are used less frequently in industrial applications but are widely used in domestic applications such as in vacuum cleaners , refrigerator compressors, and air conditioners , owing to the use of single-phase AC power in homes and offices. In this article, we will discuss what a three-phase motor is and describe how it operates.
The first concept we need to understand about a 3 phase induction motor is the first part of its name — 3 phase power. A single phase power supply uses two wires to provide a sinusoidal voltage. At any point in time if you were to add up the voltage of each phase, the sum would be constant.
