The MA is a hybrid design with the preamplifier section powered by 4 12AX7A vacuum tubes 2 tubes per audio channel , while the watt power amplifier section employs a solid state design.
There are 10 analog inputs on the MA consisting of 2 balanced and 6 unbalanced inputs, plus 1 Moving Coil and 1 Moving Magnet input for connecting a turntable. Both phono inputs feature adjustable loading for fine tuning the MA to your specific turntable configuration so your vinyl collection sounds just right.
All the unbalanced analog connectors are constructed from premium gold-plated solid brass for superior signal handling and grounding. The MA also has 1 balanced and 1 unbalanced output if you ever want to connect to an additional amplifier that's used in a different part of your residence.
This audiophile-grade DAC features improved dynamic range and improved total harmonic distortion. The DA2 can be replaced by future modules to keep your MA up to date as new digital audio formats and technologies are developed.
The DA2 has received Roon Tested designation from Roon Labs, which can be especially useful if you have an extensive library of digital music. It has been profiled and tested by both Roon and McIntosh for maximum compatibility.
Roon will recognize it and send it audio optimized for its capabilities. No fiddling with checkboxes or dropdowns, Roon Tested devices are automatically identified and configured out of the box for a superior customer experience. The top of the MA is highlighted by some updated industrial design elements. The Autoformers and power transformer are now contained in a new glass topped enclosure capped by a glass name plate encircled with a decorative trim ring.
Key performance specifications and a detailed block diagram are printed on 5 glass panels. The entire unit is wrapped in the classic McIntosh aesthetic with a pair of blue watt meters, a black glass front panel, rotary control knobs, illuminated logo, aluminum end caps with built-in handles and a beautiful stainless steel chassis polished to a mirror finish.

Nowadays that's completely changed with integrated amps now occupying the same space as their multi-chassis brethren. In fact many integrateds claim superiority to separates. In fact there's a new term for these amps that's been floating around - Super Integrateds! From the day that solid state output devices were created an argument has continued to rage on between which is better - tubes or transistors, with equally strong arguments coming from both camps. From as far back as the 60's, instead of picking a side, Mcintosh decided to make products from both technologies and allow the customer to pick their favourite. And then a patter emerged with many customers opting for a tube preamp and a solid state power amp. This gives the benefit of the warmth and detail of tubes combined with the power of solid state and, therefore, the best of both worlds. Taking a page from the recent success of the MA and MA , Mcintosh have decided to make their top of the line Integrated Amp a Hybrid meaning it uses Tubes for the Preamp section and solid state outputs for the Power Amp.

Reckoned to be the most powerful integrated amplifier to come out of McIntosh Labs, the MA pushes out watts per channel, that's 50 W more than the company's previous contender for power champion, 's solid-state MA For this model, McIntosh has elected to combine the warmth of a vacuum tube pre-amplifier with the power of a solid-state amplifier. The former rocks two 12AX7A tubes per channel, while the company's Autoformer technology is promised to ensure that the power amp section delivers all watts to the speakers, whether they have 2, 4 or 8-ohms impedance. The McIntosh nameplate up top is surrounded by a striking ceramic ring that sits above the home of the power transformer and Autoformers, and the glow of the vacuum tubes can be seen between the blue watt meters out front.
