Is it worth the extra money? Only you can decide but we're certain it's better than our Award winner, the PDP-LX, and that's really saying something We've seen so many impressive Pioneer plasmas recently, it's becoming difficult to find new superlatives.
But amazingly, the Japanese company's newest model, the KRPA, manages to eclipse even its illustrious forebears. Although the luxurious black finish is bang-up-to-date, the set's configuration marks a return to the two-box design of older Pioneer sets.
The main display is just a panel, with no TV tuner and a strictly limited array of inputs; even speakers are optional. Everything else is found in an external 'media receiver', a slab of glossiness featuring a fold-down fascia panel that hides key inputs, plus card-reader slots. Unusually, it also includes a digital satellite TV receiver, although not to Freesat specification: it'll receive free-to-view unencrypted satellite signals, but without the electronic programme guide EPG of Freesat.
The remaining input sockets are on the unit's rear. So, why re-adopt the two-box design? Well, it makes wall-mounting neater and easier but it also cuts down on the depth and weight of the panel itself: at just 64mm thin, it's possibly the slimmest 50in screen we've seen. Substance to match the style But style and design considerations apart, the KRPA's real appeal lies in its performance.
It boasts two new picture modes: the first is an enhanced version of the automatic picture-adjusting 'Optimum' system found in older sets, modified here with an external colour sensor probe that clips magnetically to the side of the set.
The end results were overcooked for our tastes, but you might like it, and the onscreen graphics are certainly flashy. But we were far more interested in the other new mode, called 'Pure'.
Essentially, it cuts out all the picture processing you don't need, and sets the Pioneer to an almost uncannily accurate 'out-of-the-box' picture set-up that, unless you're prepared to get a specialist picture calibration done, is pretty much as good as it gets in a mainstream TV. Movement, colour depth, black level and detail are all simply fabulous. And even with lower-quality content, the good news continues, with the obvious caveat that not even the best off-air signals look quite as clean as Blu-ray.

In spite of the embarassing acronym, the Pioneer Kuro KRPA is a very high-end TV, aimed squarely at the home cinema enthusiast, and particularly those who want a professional install. Pioneer is aiming this at wall-mount installations too, because the tiny depth of the TV makes it ideal for such placement. It's so thin because all the inputs and media gubbins are in a separate box. The KRP is only available at select Pioneer retailers, but to be fair, there are quite a few of these, and the TV is available online through a number of reputable stores. Design The most unusual thing about this TV is that it consists of two boxes. The only way you would know this wasn't a is if you looked at the back of the TV, where you would find virtually no inputs. All that you'll see on the rear of the set is a power connection, a small proprietary socket for the TV's colour sensor and a set of speaker connections.

If money's no object then it's also not bad for watching a few Euro TV channels, but it's probably not worth the investment if you're only after free-to-air HD because there just isn't enough — and it doesn't support Freesat fully. The KRPA is a superb high-definition display that will really make the most of new hi-def channels and sources and will stand the test of time. For those who prize picture quality above all else, there are TVs, and then there are Pioneer Kuro TVs, and it was sad news that the same day we took possession of the KRPA, Pioneer announced that this generation of Kuro will be the last. A quality brand with a price tag to match, it's the global recession's first big kill of the AV world. The brutal facts are that although LCD still can't match plasma for contrast, deep blacks and response time, it's getting very close, and the top end of LCD is half the price of the top end of plasma. Not that you'll see Freeview or Freesat labels on the Kuro, on the screen or the separate media receiver, in the manual or on the box, although there is a DVB logo on top of the media receiver.

And that's all that needs to be said. The A is far better than even Pioneer's previous plasma TVs. Being a self-consciously premium TV is not a comfortable place to be in these cash-strapped times. But if any set can make a triumph out of such apparent adversity, it's the KRPA, which appears to be Pioneer's most uncompromising model to date. First, connecting all your AV gear to an external box does away with the horrible cable-spaghetti most TVs have. Instead you just get a single lead between the AV receiver and the A's 50in screen, which is a much more satisfactory scenario for wall mounters. Taking all the tuner and connection gubbins out of the A's screen has also helped Pioneer make the set barely half as deep as its regular plasma TVs.
