Transistor amplifier literature has existed for well over a half century. Why another book on an old subject? What is lacking in the analog circuits literature are detailed examples that give newer engineers gaining confidence in design some exposure to the thought sequences of an experienced engineer. Several amplifiers are designed in this book, step-by-step, with explanation. A few are shown below. One amplifies temperature: a bandgap reference, Paul Brokaw style:.

While going through design details, the actual circuits — most based on a monolithic NPN-PNP array, the CA — are built, measured with measurement considerations included such as probe loading and transmission-line sources , and compared to the theoretical calculations, then assessed.

The following book excerpt page is of cascode amplifier 3, shown above. Power-supply rejection is measured and calculated, and the results compared. PSR is analyzed by considering each supply as an input port and finding the gain from it to the output. No new concepts are required to perform this kind of quasistatic analysis. Measurements of the prototype of amplifier 3 resulted in the following PSR data:.

It is even more sensitive to —12 V. Variations in either are amplified instead of rejected, and this is a weakness of the circuit.

For Q1, as V — decreases slightly, it is attenuated by the R E divider and then amplified. The attenuation is. The sign opposes the positive change through R L2 and the combined gain is thus —3. Considerations that involve calculation from design formulas derived in the first half of the book include.

Most of the time, algebra and a calculator produce reasonable approximations of design parameters, including bandwidth, but the succession of designs shows where calculator analysis mainly of bandwidth begins to fail and a simulator is needed.

Design covers what is to be done before turning on a circuit simulator. The first half of the book presents the fundaments of analog circuits in a refined and clarifying way, covering both passive and active circuits principles. This book also is unusual in that it attempts to address a very broad range of readership, from experienced engineers to those aspiring to be engineers, including astute young pre-university students who are good at math and science.

Consequently, the challenge is taken to develop circuits concepts with a minimum of advanced mathematics as such. The mathematical basis for Laplace transforms, differential equations, and most of differential and integral calculus no less advanced calculus is not actually needed to think in the complex-frequency domain, which mainly involves complex-number algebra.

I have included just enough calculus to bridge the gap for the pre-calculus student yet hopefully not annoy engineers too much. While chapter one starts out slow and easy, the book ends at a level suitable for an advanced analog circuits class or engineers in industry who want to find out what they might have missed. The last chapter expands the scope to mixed-signal circuits and develops both quasistatic and dynamic transfer functions for sampling circuits, including the important cases of DACs and ADCs.

This book is intended to be complementary to my Analog Circuit Design book-set while also enabling newer designers to access it. Even the simpler circuits in this book involve problems that experienced electronics engineers can ponder. I hope that for them, a few useful insights will be added to their already considerable knowledge of transistor amplifiers.

Writing this book has done that for me! Book details can be accessed at Innovatia where there is also a link to the printer purchase webpage.

Looks like a useful book, unfortunately shipping for me costs the same amount as the book! Are there any epub or other electronic copy purchase options?

First of all, thanks for posting these circuits. Together with the explanatory info they are a joy to 'discover'.

I simply love these kind of circuits, and use analog stuff a lot, even in our new circuits!! The ones saying that all gets digital, hey, forget about it. In our sensor world, pre-conditioning and power circuits the world is very analog and always will be. But now I am ranting on a blog with people finding this too trivial. For example adding a few m volts ripple to the power supply to see the effect on the output signal. I guess the habit comes from too many years using a singal injector and a 'scope, but I find it useful.

If your simulator allows it, or you have the patience to do it manually, you can also try parameter variations for things like current gain, transconductance, etc. I have already recommended to the printer I am the publisher that they increase their shipment options to reduce price.

For Europeans and others, there is somewhat of a different solution. Contact me at my email address at innovatia dot com slash Inquiry for a PDF option at a price that you will find is necessarily reasonable. I am trying to encourage open-source access to the book while still receiving some benefit for having written it, and am offering the PDF version on a pay-as-you-will honor system. If you find the book worthless, don't send me anything; if it is invaluable, clean out your savings account!

PDF is better than nothing, but if you are like me, a bound printed version is better to work with. However, the cheapest option — ordinary airmail — could possibly be set up from here Belize if enough of you really want a paper copy with a reduced shipping cost.

Yes, Dennis, I love the picture of the workbench! I had to do a double-take because it resembles my garage lab so much! As I have time, I will read the blog and comments. That was my primary workbench when I last lived in the USA. Most of the instruments are typical of electronics benches, but on the right side is one that is not: a dynamometer. It has been an ongoing decades-long project of mine and others and would fill a hole in the market — if only someone would get to it!

If you or anyone else would be interested in building on what has been done thus far and the project is far along by participating in such a project on an open-source basis, contact me at the email address pointed to by my previous posts for this article. Hi i am new to this forum and to making electronic things. Last edited by openport; 19th May at PM. You can get it as a bittorrent. Then you should have 'The Art of Electronics' by Paul Horowitz and Winfield Hill, ISBN which is not amplifiers, although it contains some stuff about them, but it will stop you going wrong in most areas and it is modern, reliable and highly though of. Perhaps somebody can recommend something more basic. Although it says 'basics' there's a wealth of knowledge about audio in dozens of sections to which you've now got an entry point. It has also proved popular in industry as a reference text. Having previously been fully revised by Steve Winder, this classic textbook covers all the latest developments in the field, matched to current degree module syllabuses in both the UK and USA. Each chapter is followed by a set of exercises, enabling the reader to put the theory learnt into practice, with full answers provided at the back of the book. The reason is the electronic devices divert your attention and also cause strains while reading eBooks. Steve works alongside design engineers throughout Europe to design circuits using components made by Intersil Inc, a US based manufacturer of CMOS ICs used for power supply controllers and for analogue signal processing. Prior to joining Intersil Inc.

It's a very old book, first published , 7th edition published It doesn't cover MOSFETs but it does an excellent job for junction transistors, from first principles to applications. It was written to explain transistors to engineers when they were so new that almost nobody had ever learned about them in college. At high frequency the voltage gain of all amplifiers will drop off at a certain point; a generic profile is shown in figure The major cause of this limitation is the effect of the internal capacitors, and a small signal model of a MOSFET with these internal capacitors can be found in figure Introduction to Electronics iv Power Supplies, Power Conservation, and Efficiency 11 DC Input Power..
