Several members of the corvids or crow family, such as ravens, can mimic human speech. The best talking crows may be the ones found in captivity at zoos and wildlife centers. Since they are both native species, it is illegal to keep American crows or common ravens as pets , because wildlife officials fear that it could lead people to "kidnap" baby birds from their nests to sell. He said nothing for a while, and then two ravens started their own conversation. I looked up and spotted a jet-black bird on a utility pole. They squawked at my dog as she dug their hidden crab shells from under mounds of grass.

When he was four years old, Johnny had travelled to nearby Hippa Island with his grandmother and listened to what the ravens had to say. White fishermen passed by without stopping, but a pair of ravens saw the Haida man and flew back with the news.

When a boat from the village went out, the ravens came back to say all was OK. Johnny had asked his grandmother how the birds came to learn Haida. Our dogs played as Johnny continued his story. By the time he was 10, he had been taken to residential school. Years later, he came home and had almost forgotten the language of the birds. He started speaking Haida with his old auntie and found out that she talked with the ravens too.

The ravens told her when someone in the village was about to die. One call, he said, comes when a raven is watching you working on a project, like fixing gears on a fishing boat. The large black birds started up again, clucking and gargling as my dog jostled back into sight.

On any other day, I would have been horrified. But I just smiled as I grabbed her by the collar and bade farewell to the elder and his dog. Then I looked up at the ravens.
