Dynaco pas 3 preamplifier audio

I think the best PAS3 mods are the ones that do the least. Just upgrade the tubes, caps and resistors get rid of the selector and put in a noble volume control. Don't go overboard with the powersupply. If you try to build the ultimate preamp in the pas chassis

Ads are not premitted. Any recommendations? This tube is regarded as the holy grail among the double-triode preamp valves. The extra thick mica spacers support the rugged mechanical construction and the careful TAD quality control proceedure ensures performance stability and low microphonics.

The TAD S delivers a rich, harmonically complex tone and mid-range warmth that is just outstanding compared to any other currently manufactured tube today. Great warm and clean tones and creamy overdrive.

Re: Dynaco PAS-3 tubes? I did a bunch of tube testing in a PAS, and I found the JJ 12AX7 to be quite superior in most respects, the one downside being that they have a high infant mortality. Sound-wise, it was easily the equal to the Telefunken, both testing it and listening. They were also admirably cheap, but they have gone up as people discovered them. You can still get a whole lot more of them, screen for early demise, and still be cheaper than a NOS Telefunken.

Just restuffed the board. But I used it as a line amp, not a phono amp. I had both Telefunkens and Mullards in it for comparison. Both sounded good but I preferred the sound of the original Mullards in it. I don't have a clue how Eastern Europe tubes would sound in it. Or if it needs component upgrades to hear it. I think the smoother mids came from the Mullards. I had a pretty much free source for the parts I used.

I can't remember if the originals were Telefunken or Mullards. First, it was grid emission. One stage is set up to be particularly vulnerable to this I eventually found myself screening my stock to find 12AX7s that would work in this circuit. Next was microphonics: after many hours of testing, I delivered the set to the customer.

Hooking it up to his record player, we immediately heard noise on one channel. In a matter of minutes, this was traced to an exceptionally microphonic tubewhich of course had not misbehaved in my shop.. Back in the shop, I'm once again going through my inventory Once again, after hours of testing, the set has been redelivered. I have not heard from the customer in over a month I choose to interpret this as good news.

At one point in this process, I told the customer that some people would shotgun it and buy all new 12Ax7s He decided not to do that, but at least he now understands the issue. I have worked on several HH Scott amplifiers and the original Telefunken tubes are almost always like new if they were not already pilfered by the previous owner to sell on the auction site.

Good choices, Telefunken or vintage Great Britain manufactured Mullard tubes. I am not into tube rolling. Instead, I roll my eyes SeriouslyI can fully understand how microphonics would be very much dependent on the brand. Would this also be true with the grid emission issue? What I have read is that grid emission is cause by cathode material being deposited on the grid, causing it to become an emitter. Save a few crude tests, I know nothing else That is all it tests.

Almost have as many shields and bugles now as honeybees in my attic exaggerating, Germany in the 's, untouched, un- trialed Telefunken tube The 12AX7 in the scope or Hammond organ! All microphonics, strange emissions and other weird stuff was likely pulled if so and replaced until a tube worked correctly in the circuit.

Picked up an ignition scope cheap for my part, actually using to test ignition systems and before it arrived downloaded the schematic to look it over, familiarization etc. Boy was I worried when I saw the tube lineup! Probably been robbed of the tubes. Was happy to see all the sockets filled under the hood.. Swapped those into my Dynaco FM3 and the well loved Telefunken from the tuner back into the 'scope.

The ignition trace displays look just fine to me, BUT, the tuner stereo separation and imaging perked up nicely.

Suggested Dynaco PAS mods the thermionic watercooler. Both are original in stock form. I have looked up a few mods already, but don't know what would be the best ones to go with. One thing I did notice is that just about all of the mods bypass the tone controls.

I built a Vacuum Tube Audio (tubes4hifi) SP8 preamp. It was challenging for me, and costly. But as TN Allen says, your pas3 is worth more than.

Dynaco PAS3 as phono preamp/phono stage

As am I my friend. I'm waiting for him to finish it up and this project will take off after that. It's been quite a few months of waiting but it was worth it, the PAS chassis from Dynakit Parts is out and is of very high quality. The build can now continue ;. I have personally seen the chassis and bezels at Dynakit and the quality is first class. Now you can build a new PAS preamp without purchasing a donor preamp of unknown origins. I have built Koren's PAS preamp using point to point construction and had no problems with the gain of his design. I used all his component values without any changes. I used MOV4 remote volume and selector available on line in the 40 dollar range.

Dynaco PAS 3 Sound Quality

Overall Rating 4 of 5. Value Rating 5 of 5. Rate this review? I probably overpaid for it but it's hard to find one with a really clean faceplate, which this had. While I knew that David Hafler's PAS design was highly respected in its day, what really convinced me to buy one was a remark by Steve Melkisethian in his Angela Instruments catalog some years back -- that he'd rather listen to a well-serviced PAS than any solid state pre extant! After listening I understand his enthusiasm. While the PAS is a favorite with modifiers, I would hesitate to mess with David Hafler's design -- instead I would focus on upgrading parts and bringing everything to perfect spec -- I'd hate to lose the "PAS sound", as I experience it. I had a lot of trouble getting my PAS up and running.

Yes, we can rebuild your old Dynaco PAS 2/3/3X tube preamp using our extremely popular PAS upgrade kits. This 'new' PAS sounds amazing and.
