LOG IN. I have a large farm machine shop that I would like to place a pair of Klipschorns in. I know they need to be in the corners, but can they be mounted up off of the floor. Or do the horns need to be on the floor to sound right? The shop is 48Wx72Lx17H.

Posts: Joined: September 15, It's stated up front that Art's listening room is 17' X 12' X 8' making it a marginal setting for the Klipschorns, and as long as you keep this in mind the review does make a sincere attempt to be fair.

It is stated that a previous attempt to review the K horns was declined by Klipsch due to the intended room to be used was even smaller in Art's previous house. The K Horn's life like dynamics are praised which is to be expected from a horn compared to direct radiators. Vague stereo imaging is noted by Art and John Atkinson which is also to be expected from a "room bound" big horn rig which does not have the drivers aligned in phase.

The cabinet seems to have been modified in this iteration with some added MDF panels so that the speakers are not so corner bound as previously, though Art didn't seem to have much luck adjusting the toe-in.

It's an often told story that Paul Klipsch didn't actually have corners in his listening room and used false corners constructed from studs and drywall.

I didn't see any mention of L pads on the mid and tweeter, and from the measurements and comments it seems like the tweeters could have been padded down a bit. The K horns were removed from the room and taken outside to the driveway for JA's measurements. I can't help wondering that if the impedance graph was done with the K Horns in a corner which they weren't outside that the impedance graph would have came out better due to the proper acoustic load being on the bass horn driver which it was designed for.

There is due mention of the K Horn's short comings in the area of the soundstage and stereo imaging, which has come to dominate the high end audio scene via TAS and Stereophile. JA even mentions the possibility of try-amping the K Horns and getting the drivers in phase with digital delay, but I don't know if anyone's ever actually done this. It seems like it would be simple to remove the tweeter and mount it on top of the cab on a sled so it can be aligned in phase with the mid, but I've never heard of anyone trying this with a K Horn either.

How important the soundstage becomes is a matter of opinion, and I for one don't pay it that much attention when going to a concert at the CSO, the real dynamics of the orchestra dominate the sound of live music, and it takes a horn to catch a horn in that regard in my experience.

Many of the orchestral instruments have vague locality, the whole string section for example, though you can pin point the sound of a solo violinist of course. And the English horn section don't have their bells pointed at the audience anyway, so you are hearing much of their sound reflected.

Ditto for the sound being reflected off of the music stands in all the sections. So you pick your speakers to fit your musical taste, and it was ever thus. One quibble with the specs: it's mentioned that the bass horn is "bi-directional", and I think they mean bi-furcated as bi-directional would mean it was something along the lines of an open baffle, or double loaded like Olson' compound horn of the 's.

And yes, 'sound stage' is over-rated my Edgar Horns didn't do 'sound stage' all that well and may be a product of the popularity of small, monkey coffin speakers.

I'm confused. My Edgar Horns do sound stage pretty well. Perhaps my confusion lies in the difference between imaging and sound stage. Imaging is great. Mine are near the corners of about an 18' room. By sound stage, do you mean location of players as to being in front or further back on the stage? I surely can envision a drum kit behind the wall with the right recording particularly live acoustic stuff. What drivers are you using? The TADs went higher and measured better, but sounded a bit flat.

My s just sounded more nuanced with more depth. After listening to the brash Altec Model 19s for a while, I would say that the Edgars don't tend to push an image out in front of the speaker like the Altecs. Could well be placement The whole issue of "stereo" From Ancient Greek stereo- , the combining form of stereos , "firm, solid"!

It is possible maybe even easy to create a convincing two-dimensional "image" with two channels and two loudspeakers. Creating the three-dimensional "soundstage" a term which I 'hate' -- especially when combined with the verb "to throw" or used as a verb itself So what "soundstage" are those high-perfomance loudspeakers reproducing? Good imaging is when material common to the left and right channels at equal volume seems to emanate from center stage, even though there is no center speaker.

It's very easy to accomplish with a very narrow listening sweet spot, not so easy to make the sweet spot wider. That's realized when the dispersion in the directionally locatable frequencies, above roughly Hz, is uniform over a wider angle. Dudley seems to think that's accomplished with a narrower speaker. He's not alone in that belief, but it's wrong. Wider more uniform dispersion tends to be enhanced when the actual driver radiating plane is narrower, not the speaker baffle. That said, if there's an issue with the KHorn, and most horn loaded speakers, it's that midrange and high frequency horns do tend to have narrower, less uniform dispersion than direct radiators.

That makes the sweet spot narrower as well, but you can overcome that by increasing the listening position distance. That's why horns tend to sound better in larger rooms. I heard PKs system in Hope circa His listening room wasn't small, but even so he was aware of the imaging limitations of the KHorn. He got around that by having KHorns in the left and right corners and a Heresy mid wall in between them. Thanks, well put! But dissent will not be tolerated. Or the folded horn I've got the 80hz bass horns with two 15" Velodyne subs that provide a solid bass foundation and punch.

When I had my Vandersteen 3As and a pair of his subs, it did sound staging, but the impact was missing. It was too polite.

I always like Edgar's folded horn for it's footprint and the 80hz does drop like a rock at 80hz. Do you still have the horns? Ah yes, it's all fake sound I'm just listening to Allison Krauss doing the Lucky One. Her voice is dead center and out front while the players are nicely distributed throughout the stage, fiddle here, guitar there, a mandolin, bass over there and the drums in back.

I get it, 2D versus 3D. Dynamics and efficiency are what truly draws me to horns which equates to less distortion and what strikes me as closer to 'live' illusion.

It usually makes me happy. There's always a sweet spot. I do admire speakers that can keep the illusion as you wonder. Well, not all recordings are made that way. Mike forests are out for live concerts.

ORTF array of cardioids. Hi all! I've never heard a multi-way horn spkr that can do justice to real stereo. For me the music making should be good enough, and audible. Which makes the title more than a bit silly, no? I listen to live acoustic music at least once a week. We're not rockin' horned bass here, but the other stuff -- all horny, all the time.

Nothin' adds a little flesh and blood like a truly dynamic reproducer and I wonder ans I wander Yes, room might have been too small for them as they were along the long wall with Steve's bass horn in the center and listeners were along the opposite long wall.
