Folded horn speaker cabinets

Folded Horn W-Bin Porting. I just wanted to make sure the same porting rules apply that you would use for a standard box. I just didn't know if having the port on the opposite side of the chamber as the baffle makes a difference in how to tune it or not. Thanks Glenn.

Thread starter Nick Sorenson Start date Feb 10, Messages 1, I heard a rock band with an Acoustic Cerwin Vega 18" in a huge folded horn cab powered by an SVT Classic in the late 90s and remember thinking the tone was great.

I played through a vintage Ampeg V-4b head and 2x15 folded horn cab at a store in the 90s and it also had something special. I remember it sounding raw and alive. I plugged the same head Ampeg V4B head into a GK or maybe SWR cab right next to it and it just sounded like any other new amp from the day good but no real character or vintage feel to it.

This convinced me that the cab speaker is a big part of the vintage sound. Why does nobody do the folded horn thing anymore? Here are pictures of what I'm describing: Acoustic Last edited: Feb 12, Jon Moody Member. Messages Simply put? Bass players seem to be more open and interested in adopting new tech to make their lives easier.

Everything has gotten more efficient, designed more thoughtfully, etc.. Gigantic stacks, while still really cool, aren't necessarily needed anymore for a bass player to have great sound. Jon Moody said:. Spupilup Member. For their time they were awesome bass amps. The combination puts out as much power as the amp head and weigh less.

Messages 39, Needs Coffee Member. Folded horn cabinets did a lot to compensate for the absolutely awful PA systems of the time, too. As Walter points out, they took a relatively small amount of power and really threw a lot of sound out there. That's great if you're playing a stadium or festival gig where the nearest audience members are ' away from the amp. If you played bar or small club dates those cabinets - in addition to being a pain to load in and out - were hard to control.

In a small space they would boom or honk and it was very hard to get any sort of definition. Modern technology has solved all of that; Hugely powerful amps that weigh only a few pounds and small cabinets that will provide good definition in small spaces but are still able to give as much throw as and more extended bass than most of the folded horns ever could.

And, with modern PAs, that throw isn't really necessary anymore anyway. As for the V4b, it was reissued a few years ago. That's a great sounding head, both the reissue and the original.

I always preferred the way it sounded through a 2x15 or an 8x10 fridge, but that's just personal taste. I played through a friend's reissue a couple of years ago plugged into a single Ampeg 2x10 one of the recent models and I was prepared to be unimpressed by the cabinet but I had to admit it actually sounded pretty great. Messages 45, More punch from 10" speakers and we don't need rigs that require a semi-truck and forklift to move them anymore.

After years of schlepping around heavy equipment, there's no way I will ever go back to that stuff. Doesn't mean it still doesn't sound good, you just don't need it any longer to get a good tone.

Because wheels and handles, yo. No more difficult than trundling out the trash on garbage day. Now if we're talking outdoor gig with gravel parking lot, I'll just manage to be somewhere else for a while. I think I hold a record of some sort regarding bass folded horn rigs. Once I bought a used Acoustic the 's forerunner and actually crammed it into and drove it home in my VW Rabbit!

Last edited: Feb 13, BigDoug Gold Supporting Member. Messages 5, I highly recommend small combo amps with built-in DI outputs. I have played several gigs in theaters with PA support, and my GK MB 1x12 combo served as my personal monitor with the DI providing the volume and subwoofers.

I had that same folded horn enclosure for many years, and trust me - it's a pain in the butt to schlep. I am 68 and can still load the Neo cab. The folded horn is also unusable in a small combo jam or gig because the long focus of the folded horn makes actually hearing the bass difficult on stage. Messages 11, Are folded horns like what we used to call W boxes in PA systems as use as subs?

We used to have this huge but modular setup we rented for every gig that had two W boxes, mains and horns on top. The sound guy built custom spacers so it looked like an awesome wall, but in clubs. We used the whole thing at larger outdoor gigs too.

Messages 4, Clubs are smaller, amp watts are cheaper, and speakers can handle those watts. Nick Sorenson said:. On the flip side, you still do see gigantic stacks Nothing has quite replaced the SVT with 8x10" speakers for a grinding rock tone. Messages 3, I suppose answering the question of "what is the intended usage" is a requirement before offering specific equipment? Silver Supporting Member. I wonder if anyone has done a folded horn IR I'd be legitimately curious to know if that's true, or just our perception.

I wonder if they'd offer up the statistics, as that would be fascinating to see what trends are apparent. Needs Coffee said:. Did you hear it live? I sure would have liked to! Again, we're talking about a rig which sounds wonderful only when it's in a space big enough to let it open up.

Those C-V cabinets used to be common in small and medium-sized clubs and they sounded awful because they just bounced low-mid standing waves off the walls and made mud. Get one in a stadium or amphitheater and it was a totally different story!

For a classic sound reminiscent of that era that works better in smaller rooms - the rooms I imagine most of the folks on this forum are most likely to play - I personally feel any cabinet based on the old Electrovoice TL would do a better job than any folded horn.

They also tend to sound really good with those classic heads.

Horn loudspeaker

During all my years in the business, I have been on a quest for the ultimate subwoofer. We developed a lot of horns over the years, and continue to do so, because horns have a number of desirable and beneficial properties compared to vented boxes. Other than building individual horns that are absolutely massive, or building a segmented horn comprised of many separate elements that combine to make one massive horn, there was not a practical way to build a subwoofer horn that was portable and would reach a minimum frequency of 30Hz. I had to look for a more practical way to deliver the deep bass I wanted to incorporate into the horns. Eventually I designed a hybrid box that incorporated a vented section with a long, partially folded horn-loaded section. Although the box was also quite large, heavy and complicated to build, it was smaller and lighter and less complicated than the B-Zero… and it produced massively low bass compared to the B-Zeros. That particular design was really time-consuming to build, so it was impractical from a size and cost point of view. It did go low but the long horn and the vented section still left something to be desired. What I then did was begin to develop a vented box to see what I could achieve with a highly optimized vented box.

Had been browsing the web for good speaker designs and was intrigued by the concept of horn speakers. Thought I would go ahead and make one just to see if the claims on the web were true or not very high efficiency, no cross over distortion, great sound in th mid range, and bass up to Hz without woofers. The designs on frugal-horn. I was planning on recycling drivers 3 inch or 4 inch speakers that I already had so therefore selected the least wide Spawn speakers. The picture shows how the speakers turned out.
