And writing! With ask responses to finally come! Or how to write believable bar and nightclub scenes. I often find myself helping friends with their WIPs and often it as a bartender, I find myself having to correct them on bar and mixology terminology. So here's my quick guide to keeping your lingo on the straight and narrow. Years and years ago, I read a book on cryptography that I picked up because it looked interesting--and it was!
The author was describing a cryptography class that they had taken back in college where the professor was demonstrating the process of "reversibility", which is a principle that most codes depend on. Specifically, it should be easy to encode, and very hard to decode without the key--it is hard to reverse the process. So he had an example code that he used for his class to demonstrate this, a variation on the Book Code, where the encoded text would be a series of phone numbers.
The key to the code was that phone books are sorted alphabetically, so you could encode the text easily--picking phone numbers from the appropriate alphabetical sections to use ahead of time would be easy. But since phone books were sorted alphabetically, not numerically, it would be nearly impossible to reverse the code without exhaustively searching the phone book for each string of numbers and seeing what name it was tied to. Nowadays, defeating this would be child's play, given computerized databases, but back in the 80s and 90s, this would have been a good code He had never considered that question.
As a result, his cipher, which seemed to be nearly unbreakable to him, had such an obvious flaw, because he was the sort of person who could never coldcall someone to ask that sort of thing! In the crypto book, the author went on to use this story as an example of why security systems should not be tested by the designer because of course the security system is ready for everything they thought of, by definition , but for me, as a writer, it stuck with me for a different reason.
It's worth talking out your story plot with other people just to see if there's a "Why not just call the phone numbers? Especially if you're writing the sort of plot where you have people trying to outsmart each other.
This is a good explanation of why it drives me batshit when hacker characters in movies say "Can I break that encryption? And these idiots have implemented it all wrong, clearly had no idea what they're doing, look, all I have to do is this This is one of my favorite tricks, picked up from E. Forester and filtered through my own domestic-homebody lens. Honestly, fic writers have gotten the memo on objective correlatives, but sometimes struggle with how to use them.
Objective correlatives can quickly become a repetitive or b melodramatic. They could be folding laundry or sweeping the floor or cooking a meal or making a bed or changing a lightbulb. The point is to engage your characters in some meaningless, everyday household task that does not directly relate to the subject of the conversation.
This trick gives you a whole wealth of objective correlatives. If your character is taking a moment to think, then they might splash suds around for a few seconds. A character who is not that invested in the conversation will be looking at the sink not paying much attention. A character moderately invested will be looking at the speaker while continuing to scrub a pot. If the character is suddenly very invested in the conversation, you can convey this by having them set the pot down entirely and give their full attention to the speaker.

The reason I recommend having it be one of these boring domestic chores instead of, say, scaling a building or picking a lock, is that chores add a sense of realism and are low-stakes enough not to be distracting. And chores are a cheap-n-easy way to add a lot of realism to your story. Anyway: objective correlatives are your friends. They get emotion across, but for low-energy scenes can become repetitive and for high-energy scenes can become melodramatic.
The solution is to give your characters something relatively mundane to do while the conversation is going on, and domestic chores are not a bad starting place. Hey btw, another worldbuilding thing: You can, and actually should have weird and impractical cultural things.
Nice pretty doves :. A part of you wants to say no , because these are your nice, pretty doves. The logistics of how, exactly, could anyone breed and train a flock of feral birds go unaddressed. An even worse solution would be to not have those birds, editing them out of the world. And thanks to the sheer necessity of constantly regularly cleaning everything, the city enjoys a much higher standard of cleanliness, and less public health issues caused by poor public sanitation.
While I absolutely love your idea, I just want to say that you can easily reduce public bird shitting from Pigeons by offering them comfortable lodgings where they can sleep and feed.

One big entrance for the human servants priests?? So your world is like ours and most major cities have a big feral pigeon population. And most of those cities HATE the pigeons and try to fight them and stuff. And they think that pigeon worshipper town is frigging cuckoo. BUT when comparing, then pigeon worshipper town is ridiculously clean and beautiful. No bird shit everywhere, no ruined house facades and statues from erosion through bird poop.
I think this is a really good example of how research can greatly improve your worldbuilding! Wait, did you choose snakes specifically as a reference to that time when people literally used snakes as currency, or what is a random example? They would also tie them to their calves to protect them from snake bites and lightning. If you happen to rise before dawn, follow the path that leads to the wilderness, where the weeds grow freely. In the early morning light, if you have been patient enough to stay, you will see a man who wanders alone, yet does not think of solitude as his foe.
Watch as he stops by the frozen lake, to smile softly at the fairies that dance atop its surface. Here you can hear his heart sing. Here you can see his spirit soar. Here you can feel his heart beat, but not to the distant cheer of his people.
In this vast wilderness, it is the harsh breeze and whispering of leaves that grant him life. Snow is settling in his hair, but he does not shiver. He murmurs apologies as his feet tread on the flowers that once were and soon will be again, his voice a low murmur not unlike the hum of a long forgotten melody. There is no question as to whether or not he is human.
Look on with sorrow as he turns to the mountains and parts his lips to call for a friend no longer present. Notice how his shoulders slump when he hears no reply, how he chides himself for clinging so stubbornly to ghosts he will never bring back to life. Soon, he has moved on, and you have no more reason to brave the cold. Perhaps, if you keep quiet, the Kingdom of Norway might visit you in your dreams.

Anyway, Prussia: this character, no matter how awesome, is more difficult to type. He stands out in this way as many characters tend to have actions, motives, or descriptions that align rather closely with one specific type over another.
