LOG IN. Evaluating schiit freya preamp and it seems like a good preamp. Mode can be changed to passive which reduces current flow to tubes so electricity use is less. Edit Delete. Do u mean the input selector on remote? By switching to passive it does turn off tubes, and will also power down tubes after not being used for awhile. If only arc could power down tubes when ht was in use, they have power control on remote.

Schiit has a real knack for making serious audiophile gear that's also affordable. In my system I prefer passive mode because I only use a preamp to control volume and want to do this in the most pure way possible. Above all, I prefer the sound in passive mode. JFET buffer mode is more desirable for those who need to drive long cables between the preamp and amplifier s. During my extended listening time with the Freya, I didn't notice much sonic difference between passive mode and JFET buffer mode, but my interconnect cables are only two meters in length.

What's the deal on that? Actually, quite a bit. The tube gain is also noticeably quieter which is more evident across sensitive audio gear; a complaint which the old Freya had often received. As with the previous model, the passive mode offers a solid-state flavor with a more transparent and revealing sound albeit with less soundstage and harmonic bloom compared to the tube gain.

So when the invitation came across my desk to check out the 4 new pre amps from Schiit audio in a real life mano-a-mano duke out, I had to attend. For those not familiar, Schiit recently released four new 2-channel pre amps broken out along a few simple feature sets to replace the current tube-only models. Two price tiers separate by single ended connections only Saga or with the inclusion of balanced inputs Freya. What is especially unique about the 4-product launch is that the exercise is intended to only renew sales for the top performing units over time. Leaving the components with low shipping numbers to contemplate their poor choices in life and essentially unwillingly become part of a previously unspecified, unpredicted limited release schedule. For those who love themselves some science, the approach for disseminating the results was used by incorporating a blind test, where the participants were not aware of what pre amplifier was being played at any given time.
Schiit has all the answers. Or at least they have enough reasonably priced products to furnish a full system sans loudspeakers , whether it be on the desktop or full two-channel. Beyond that, Schiit took the original Bifrost and gave it some upgrades. The Bifrost2 also includes a remote control for source switching and phase inversion and balanced outputs, which is nice.
