Apple rolled out a really cool new Dolby Atmos surround sound feature to Apple Music this week that might help it attract and keep subscribers as it competes with streaming music leader Spotify. Dolby Atmos spatial audio makes it feel a bit more like music is surrounding you while using headphones, instead of just piping into your left and right ears. Songs with Dolby Atmos are available for free, so long as you're already an Apple Music subscriber. Spotify doesn't yet have a Dolby Atmos option.

Something weird happens to your brain when you play a steady tone at two slightly different frequencies. Try it yourself in the video embedded below. This is an auditory trick called a binaural beat, sort of like an optical illusion for your ears. An entire cottage industry has sprung up around the concept, hawking CDs, MP3s and apps to deliver supposedly healing pulses of sound. Nonetheless, a meta-analysis in Psychological Research examined 22 studies and found indications that binaural beats might affect our brains in some way.

Virtual voice assistant speakers from big-hitters Amazon, Apple and Google have never been so full of smarts. Whether you want to know the news headlines, how many calories are in an avocado around , quick and failsafe scone recipes or whether the cat misses you now you're back in the office, Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant can be found baked into certain speakers, waiting patiently for your next query. Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant products aren't just humble fonts of knowledge, either. These speakers can play your chosen music over Bluetooth or wi-fi and, depending on the brand, also offer access to a number of different music streaming services, including Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer and Spotify. The first thing to consider is compatibility. Most smart speakers are platform agnostic, so they'll work with both Android and iOS devices, but the Apple HomePod Mini isn't much use without an Apple mobile device to set it up.

Zac Hall. The announcement was brief so you might have missed it — a few minutes before the big HomePod preview — but it was on stage at an Apple event. Several AirPlay 2 speakers have since debuted on the market, but not one from the Apple-owned Beats. Apple did ship the very first AirPlay 2 speaker when the HomePod launched around this time last year albeit a little late , followed by Sonos which added support to existing speakers through a software update , but no news from Beats since the brief cameo on the AirPlay 2 speaker slide in June and the current website placement.

I should know, I have one. And it is great because when I am ready to play something on my guitar, I quickly grab my Beats Pill Bluetooth speaker. What I do is quickly remove it from the charging cord and it is ready to go. Everyone from John Mayer to Bruno Mars. Anything that sounds good, I always tell people. Not only do I own the normal sized one, I also own the XL one also.
And the battery lasts pretty long for wireless headphones. Great product. She never takes hers out of her ears!!
