Jbl speaker cabinet design

Speakers perform a great deal of continuous mechanical work, and for that reason many older speakers have been repaired or need to be repaired. For this guide we are assuming that you are not interested in taking up a restoration project, but are seeking vintage speakers ready for active duty. This means having to understand restoration and repairs to some degree, because many vintage speakers will have had this work done to them. This guide will fill you in on all you need to know to find the right pair of vintage speakers for you. The most important thing to know before moving forward is that vintage speakers are not powered.

Thread starter Adam79 Start date Apr 26, Adam79 Member. Messages I have a custom made JBL speaker that was taken from an old school movie theater during a demo. It's pretty old.. I have it in storage, so I can't take any measurements at the moment, but the thing is gigantic the encloser comes up to my waist line, I'm 5' 10". The speaker is enormous and it has a horn on the top.

Unfortunately I don't have any pics at the moment. It still sound amazing. I acquired it about 15 years ago. I remember lugging it into my rehearsal space at the time and hooking it up to my PA. I had a D at the time and I thought the kick drum rumble was gonna bring down the building. Unfortunately since it was custom made, there's no info or serial. Any idea how much something like this would sell for? Thanks, -Adam. Messages 5, It sounds like an old VOT style speaker.

Just to give you an idea of value, here is an older JBL theater type speaker with a large horn and horn driver on top of a dual woofer cabinet. It has no crossover, which is needed for proper operation. Horns are usually resting on top. Mine looks nothing like either of the ones from the eBay links; those look newer.

My cab is very similar to the one on the lower right side of the cabinet pictures: BKA. It's extremely heavy. Next time I'm at my storage space I'm gonna take some pictures and list it for sale.. I just never use the thing. I'm not even sure how to describe it. Would it be considered a "Vintage Theater Speaker"? Would there have been two of them behind the screen for a stereo sound? I wasn't there for the demo of the cinema.

Thanks for the help, -Adam. I was in a band in and we had two of them, plus the large, metal JBL horns, high frequency drivers and crossovers. These were pretty common in the 60's and 70's for sound systems in theaters, auditoriums, stadiums, concerts, wherever decent sound for that era was needed. Depending on which speaker, horn and driver is in it, those individually might be worth some decent money. Certain old JBL speakers and high freq. If you can get the model 's off the speaker and horn driver, and take pictures, then you can compare with various websites as to the value of them.

You'll need to unscrew the back of the cabinet to see the back of the speaker, where the model is. The cabinet itself isn't worth a lot, but can be repainted to look better and add value. As to how it was used in a movie theater, there were probably two behind the movie screen IF the theater ran stereo sound.

If the theater ran mono sound, then only one would be needed, especially if it was a smaller movie theater. And selling one doesn't help someone looking for a pair of them.

At any rate, due to the size and weight, CL is probably your best bet to sell it. Just for fun, here's a photo of an old outdoor concert speaker system from the mid 70's where some of those 's where used.

I could be completely off the mark here; it's been years since I've seen the thing. I also vaguely remember the speaker being directly in front, i. Hopefully I'll be able to make the trip soon to where it's stored so I can take some pics and get all the info.

It's just too bad that it's so damn heavy on top of me having no vehicle to transport it. I do remember is saying something about the speaker being custom made. Could this just mean that the buyer chose what chassis, speaker and horn brands he wanted? Oh ya, what type of paint would I want to use for the best results?

I think it's already pretty solid, but a paint job never hurts. Thanks, Adam. Last edited: Apr 27, So I got a picture of the speaker sent to me. The speaker IS behind the baffles, and the horn is silver. Do you think the silve and black horns are the same models, just different colors? Unfortunately the cab's being stored upside down, and not in the cleanest conditions, but I'm sure it's fine; the thing's a tank. Here's the pic:. Messages 14, It's hard to say, but generally big cabinets are not worth much at all.

The speaker may be worth quite a bit though. You need to determine what it is. The first time I remember seeing a voice of the theater speaker was the opening night of the original Starwars. Space ships flying across the room in stereo. I've always wanted a pair for nastalgia - but would never move them for a gig.

New gen powered speakers surpass them in every way. I have a soft spot for old gear. That cabinet is an old JBL If the speaker were an original D, it would have an aluminum dust cap on it. So the woofer speaker has either been replaced or re-coned. That model cabinet was available in the config like yours, with the horn mounted inside the cabinet. But it was typically placed on top.

I would remove the back and get the model 's from the speaker and high freq driver, as that is were any value is. Check to see if there is a crossover inside the cab. There should be. Adam79 said:. That cab is old school PA cool. Messages 29, Here's an interesting thread on the JBL forum, it's actually a contractor PA midrange box, not enough bass for most applications for modern full range use I've compared the next generation of those, the Community line to an EV Sx and the EV killed it for bass.

And not super valuable, except for the driver and maybe the crossover. Messages 4,

How to Build Custom Speakers

jbl speaker cabinet design

One of the most popular pastimes in the DIY audio world is building loudspeaker systems. A web search will reveal literally thousands of different designs, a great many of which are at least superficially quite similar. We can be fairly certain that some of the published designs will sound very good, and others awful. This is reflected in commercial offerings as well. There aren't many 'real' audio brands that will be truly awful, but there will be differences.

The HDI enclosure is heavily braced to provide a solid acoustic foundation, and incorporates a bass reflex design with dual rear-firing, computer-optimized flared ports. The sophisticated curved cabinet features a modern design finished in a choice of automotive-grade painted High Gloss Black, or furniture-grade satin Walnut or Gray Oak wood veneers.

Enclosure design for pair of JBL H. Hey guys, new member here. I can't believe I have never been here before, for how long I have been an audio nut! Anyway, I am building a high output sub for a sort of unique situation for a customer. He is going to be using it in a very loud audio room in his home, plus he is wants to play along with it, when him and his band buddies get together. Note- he will not be plugging an instrument into it like a bass guitar, just having it playing the song they are playing at the time. It will be 2 of these drivers in one cabinet, ported, not wanting to tune too low, as this will be used for strictly music, primarily kick drum rock type bass, and loud.

Building your own custom speakers has got to be one of the most rewarding, straightforward and cost-effective DIY activities I've come across. I'm absolutely shocked that it hasn't had a larger presence on Instructables and in the community Some speaker projects can be complete in a weekend, while others can go on for years. Regardless of how much you choose to spend on your speakers, you'll likely be building something that will sound as good as commercial product that off the shelf would cost as much as 10 times more. So, if you've got access to a table saw, a jig saw, a drill, some wood glue, clamps, and a place to make some sawdust, then you've got the opportunity to build your own custom speakers.

You can choose a suitable enclosure from the existing ones, or make your own subwoofer box design.
