New geographies, old ontologies
See the photos of the event posted on Facebook and Twitter. The ideas of Henri Lefebvre on the production of urban space have become increasingly useful for understanding worldwide post-industrial city transformation. Meticulous research in Vancouver, Lowell MA and Manchester, England, explains how urban public spaces, including differential space, are contested and socially produced. Spatial coalitions, counter-representations and counter-projects are seen as vital elements in such processes. The book contributes critically to the post-industrial city comparative analysis literature.

We invite you to contribute projects and thoughts on what Henri Lefebvre has termed an urban metaphilosophy at the forthcoming Interstices Under Construction Symposium — The Urban Thing. Yet what is this millennial thing that we enter into or that, more precisely, is settling upon us? Consequently, any analysis of the operational levels of the urban phenomenon and its object and spatial fields reveal a remainder irreducable to the logistics attempting to take hold of it. Yet unlike a will to totalise, which saw philosophy historically eschew its city-origination, Lefebvre calls for a metaphilosophy of the urban, a philosophy thrown beyond institutional miring What existential relationships might the urban yet offer that resists or is richer in intimacy than commodity culture? The 'spatial turn' in the humanities and social sciences has been influenced by a range of thinkers, from the work of its 'traditional' founders - Merleau Ponty's phenomenology, Michel Foucault's writing on institutional space, Michel de Certeau's focus on everyday lived space, and Henri Lefebvre's work on the production of social space - to the more recent ideas explored through New Materialisms, topology and digital space. In light of so many developments in ideas surrounding the spatial since these founding authors, it will perhaps surprise the reader of Radical Space to discover that the ideas of thinkers such as Foucault and de Certeau feature prominently in this volume, over more current theorists of the spatial such as, for example, Peter Sloterdijk, Donna Haraway and Rosi Braidotti. The radical component of this collection is therefore not to be attributed to its theoretical or philosophical approach to the spatial. Radical Space is, in fact, not an attempt to 'do' theory.

Particular emphasis is placed upon his teaching strategies at the Architectural Association AA in London, and on an ensemble of projects on which he worked during his first forays in the United States of America such as The Manhattan Transcripts, The Screenplays and The 20 th Century Follies. His stance could be interpreted as a reaction against the tendency of architects of the previous generation to focus upon the autonomy of architecture, rejecting the internalist approaches dominating the epistemological models in Modernist architecture. The point of departure of this reflection was his desire to explore the extent to which architectural narrative could exist and under what circumstances. The importance that Bernard Tschumi attached instead to the kinaesthetic experience of architecture was based on the assumption that within the same subject there are opposing tendencies and forces, and on his desire to employ design strategies capable of bringing architecture back to a consideration of real space and its experience. It is structured around the concept of boundaries of public space and the relation between public space and more private spheres of urban life, like the home. By taking an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach, the meeting will discuss, challenge and rethink traditional boundaries between public and private, legal and illegal, planned and unplanned, formal and informal, natural and social, digital and material, familiar and uncanny. Moreover, the meeting will reflect on the impact of the COVID pandemic on the making and unmaking of boundaries within the public space as well as between public space and home. The meeting is organised as a two-day event, which will be preceded by a seven-day workshop.
However, working with these concepts in many different contexts poses serious challenges; and in any case taking Lefebvre as a starting point for research and action is an endeavor and an adventure, an expedition into unknown fields.
