Jacksonville Beach's usually fickle surf came through for this weekend's big Super Girl Surf Pro contest, which attracted the biggest stars in women's surfing — and a fair number of young local hotshots — to the sandbar south of the pier. A long-lasting Atlantic Ocean swell, though fading, could still dish up glassy chest-high waves Friday and Saturday, leading to Sunday's final. Nothing spectacular, but certainly pretty and certainly quite surfable, giving hundreds of young surfers and families on the beach the chance to see the sport's top superstars in decent waves — and sometimes to even to surf with them. Consider the excitement of surfer River Proctor, 10, who surfed and did a workshop with Carissa Moore of Hawaii, five-time world champion and recent Olympic gold-medal winner in Japan.

Now, only four remain to vie for the first-ever East Coast Super Girl cape. Alyssa Spencer looked unstoppable after a jaw-dropping Round 3 performance over fellow Californian Autumn Hays with an impressive The sheet-glass conditions in her Round 3 heat held through the Quarterfinals in arguably the heat of the event thus far against Challenger Series threat Kirra Pinkerton.

Spencer went on to post two near-perfect 9. Both Caroline Marks and Samantha Sibley took down their Round 2 heats to start the day and the pair of Super Girl Surf Pro victors battled for a spot into the Quarterfinals and Marks showed her world-class capabilities for the win.

But, Marks wasn't done for the day and had to take on current CT qualifier Sawyer Lindblad in a stout Quarterfinal matchup. Lindblad gave her best efforts to track down Marks toward the end of the heat but Marks' 8. My advice to any of the girls on the beach is the sky's the limit. Do what makes you happy, I love surfing so much and that's what makes me happy.

A slower heat made the two young women battle over the main peak on offer and Benedetto's hunting under priority paid off until the five-minute mark witnessed multiple lead changes to put the Floridian on the ropes, but she held strong. Benedetto's buzzer-beater in the Quarterfinals against event standout Chelsea Tuach forwarded the Floridian straight into the Semifinals as she looks for a second-career QS victory.

Super Girl Surf Pro Contest, festival kicks off this week

The most influential female surfers of all time have played several roles in the progression of the sport. It's not only a matter of grace but also one of ability and commitment. Mary Ann Hawkins was one of the first female surfers to show how to get waves ridden in California. She lived a troubled life, despite several career achievements in swimming and competitive surfing. Hawkins could hold her breath for more than two minutes. Marge Calhoun is considered the first female surfing champion. After taking the Makaha International surf contest, she continued to pioneer female surfing in Hawaii. Isabel Letham is the "first lady" of Australian surfing. Letham volunteered for a tandem surf session with Duke Kahanamoku when the Hawaiian champion visited Freshwater, Australia, in Margo Oberg is the first true legend of female surfing and the first multiple winner of world surfing championships.

For the 12th year in a row, more than of the world's top professional female surfers have converged this weekend in Oceanside for the Nissan Super Girl Surf Pro competition, the largest all-female surfing event in the world. This year's World Surf League qualifying event — which began Friday and runs from 8 a. Saturday and Sunday on the south side of Oceanside Pier — has grown in size every year, with now dozens of national sponsors, thousands of spectators and an ever-expanding program of female-centered events. For the third year, the event will include the nation's only all-women's multi-title esports tournament, as well as an all-female DJ contest and a female fitness challenge. There's also a free series of 21 concerts at the Oceanside Pier amphitheatre headlined by British singer Natasha Bedingfield, autograph sessions, classes, speakers, makeovers, a celebrity surf invitational and a booth vendor fair. New this year is Super Girl's first adaptive competition for six female surfers with disabilities, on Sunday. She discovered the sport just two years ago while attending Bethany Hamilton's Beautifully Flawed surf camp in Del Mar. On Friday morning, Stone and Hamilton shared a cheerful reunion at Super Girl Surf Pro, where they will be competing for the first time at the same tournament.

Out with the old—in with the new as the saying goes. The following list, assembled after long debates and plenty of parking lot banter, was assembled following these qualifications: does she rip? And does she look good doing so?

The Super Girl Surf series increases its purpose-driven events with a maiden appearance in Florida and will host a plethora of world-class athletes at the Jacksonville Beach Pier.
