By Richard A , August 18, in 2 Channel. In the early seventies I worked in my student holidays in a Hi Fi shop. There was one particular speaker that impressed me greatly as it had a very open and detailed presentation though it was a little bass shy. It was way beyond my means so I never owned a pair.
The design was unique I believe, though they were a little like the late seventies Shaninian Obelisk. The top of the speaker was only about three feet off the ground so they were quite small. I believe they were British but again my memory could be blurred! Anyone able to put me out of my misery and tell me what they were?
I have done an Internet trawl of early Seventies speakers but can find nothing that resembles them. Spot on Adam, thank you very much. Just looked them up and they were OA14s.
Anyone got or heard a pair recently? It was the first system of seperates that I had heard. Very nice. Could sound great, but also pretty dubious on some material. I rather liked their sleek amps, and a turntable that I think was a rebadged Yamaha! The designer was a Stig Carlsson, a name that sounds like it belongs to a rally driver!
I think he still does speaker designs as I recall a launch quite recently. Those look interesting, what are they? Sonab OA I will try to attach an internet picture.
They were a bit Marmitey but I loved them. Very open, transparent with brilliant imaging but not much bass. They sounded totally different to any of the other brands we were selling at the time actually the closest were probably Quad electrostatics. I was reminded of the sound when I bought my Boenicke W8 speakers - again very open and detailed with stunning imaging. Bass is a lot better than the Sonabs though! Not completely upward facing, but I've hosted a couple of times the Neat standmounts with the upward firing tweeters and I've always been extremely impressed.
