View Full Version : Amp sims Phase issue? I keep getting phase issues when I double track guitars with my le pou amp sims in Reaper. I want to quad track and send two tracks each side. The phase is better when I send one track each side.

The same gutar but tracked again. I haven't tried two guitars each side on this recording but can't remember having this problem quad tracking before. Any ideas? I'm using Reaper. Le pou le Tse Le cab On another Forum I was told to tick "auto adjust for recording latency" but I can't find it. I checked Preferences, Audio, Recording as suggested but I couldn't find it. The picture I was sent of the preferences panel is different to mine. I'm running the most up to date version of Reaper.

Any help would be great thanks. Are you sure it's phase issues and not just hearing the difference between the different parts? Can you post the track so we can hear an example of what you are talking about?

Thanks for your reply. Below is a link to a short section. Are you using the stereo switch on the le??? When you say quad tracking, you mean recording the same guitar part 4 different times Both amp sims are set to mono and there's no Chorus or effects like that on the channels. The problem is when I double track guitars on a duplicated track, so all the plugins are set exactly the same as the track before but played another time.

I have eq but no effects on the channels. I find the phase issue when I have the two tracks panned centre. When I quad track I'll have two of the same tracks on one side so I'm bothered I will have the same phase issue as I have when the two tracks are central. Not surprised at all to see phase alteration coming out of a virtual amp.

I like Amplitube and it's output phase is all over the map for different settings. When I create multiple fake gtr amp tracks, I usually end up having to render the tracks so I can nudge them into phase alignment because of this. Just like you would do with multiple microphones on an amp. Note that this assumes you want them phase aligned. Sometimes the sound you come up with is a result of phasing.

If you really want to quad track guitars then you physically need to play the same guitar part 4 separate times. I have rarely found a place where quad tracking has given me an extra benefit over double tracking a guitar part but experiment for yourself. Just to explain a couple things about audio and panning.

When you play an audio clip and pan it left and then copy the same audio track to another row and pan it right then you hear the audio in the center but louder depending on your pan law. It essentially becomes a mono track which is exactly that, the same track coming out of both the left and right speakers that your head hears in the middle. Phase coherence and cancellation is complicated but just learn a couple little things and you should be good.

When you copy the same track and play it at the same time then whatever anomalies are happening within the plugin are causing the phase issues that you are hearing, essentially a chorusing of certain frequencies which is why it isn't horribly prominent but still annoying. So when you are playing the same bit of audio copied twice on the left side it has a bit of chorusing and then do it on the right with the same effect then you have a more prominent effect when combined.

The reason that double tracking works is because our ears hear the microscopic differences in the 2 separately played guitar parts and keep the one panned to the left on the left and the one on the right stays on the right and the parts that are microscopically the same get put in the middle making the guitar part sound like it's all across the range from left to right.

This is a complicated thing and if you have more questions then ask and I will try and explain better. OP, it can help to vary the tone of double-tracked parts that are going to end up on the same channel.

This increases the perceived size of the sound while minimizing the potential for destructive summing or 'phasing' throughout the spectrum. If you do the same and flip the phase of one of the sides then you should hear nothing coming out of the headphones.

If you have panned copies and flip the polarity of one, you will hear sound in the headphones--a very wide, disorienting sound. It's only when you pan opposite-polarity copies to the same channel that they fully disappear.

Thanks for all your help guys. Would lowering the input on my interface slightly for the second guitar take change the wave forms enough to stop the phase issue?

So guitar 1 recorded twice and panned left and Guitar 2 recorded twice and panned right. Is phase more of an issue when panned centre then?

The next two steps are necessary to getting the most out of your REL. In other words, there is no intrinsic correctness to either 0 or degrees as your final listening result.
