Yamaha M-85 Amplifier - $450
User Name Remember Me? Pacific Stereo. The Yamaha M that is no longer in danger of living up to its name! Had both an M and C in the lab, and thought it would be fun to show them here. The writeup of the C might come later. For now, let's do this one. For those that don't know, the M was one of our flagship products and had a number of innovative features, including a secondary power supply we called it the X-Power Supply that would kick in on high demand, Auto Class-A operation, very high power WPC , and exceptionally good sound.
Unfortunately, it took us some iterations to get it right. The M was notorious for acting just like its namesake and blowing up at the most inopportune times. And when these blow up, you can be talking about 40 or more parts that need to be replaced.
Over time, production was changed, service bulletins were issued some for us only at the factory and the amp became reliable. The M is essentially an M with all of the changes installed.
So let's have a look at this one, which has been repaired before incorrectly and modified, too. Here's a look at the top:. Factory technician for both Yamaha and JVC. Sonics consultant for Denon. Pacific Stereo store manager, service manager, Central Service lead tech, liquidator at our demise and owner of what's left. Pacific Stereo curator. Authorized servicer for virtually every brand on the planet at one time or another.

I was given an M with a blown channel and C that was similarly unhappy to sell and get my self some funds once they ended up going to AKers when I was still there. One channel of an M is still a ride! Great job with that nightmare you had to fix. And what did you replace them with? Did you upgrade some over stock? Just asking because I have a different amp that I am always looking for suiteable replacements that will fit in the tight space.
Great job. Those main filters were not replaced, as they all were good. Otherwise this would have been a problem I would have had to solve. I do not have a good solution for replacement filters in these; if someone else does, I'd like to know about it! Must've been a real nightmare to deal with. And you did so admirably, as always!
Very nice work as usual! I have 6 P's that are built much like that except rack mount. I was given them from a friend that found them in a closed night club he was cleaning out for a new owner. They left them because they were all broke. Have them all going but 1 but will get back to that one soon.
There was all kinds of similar crap done to these also. Also bad relays, bad factory solder joints and a connector that had a wire crimped in without stripping the wire first. Lots of fun stuff. I don't have measurements, unfortunately. Since this wasn't something I needed to address, I didn't think much about it. Originally Posted by ke4mcl. Find all posts by 20tajk7. I think you left out all the details about small parts - either that or the M80 actually sorta worked when you received it.
Oh, it did. It had been previously repaired, though incorrectly and incompletely. As I said, when these blow up hard, you're talking about parts. Played on an ever increasing amount of equipment that just keeps following me home All times are GMT The time now is AM.

Of course, we have the cracked degraded foam over the transformers. This foam is purely cosmetic and does nothing important. The amp is very dirty, wires are all over the place and there's some sort of modification of the speaker terminal board.
Oh, and look at the right heatsink. The morons who worked on this amp before lost a total of two. Closer up, you can see the carbonized glue which has only been partially removed. This glue dissolves component leads and jumper wires and must be completely removed and its damage remediated. Quite the rats-nest. Let's fillet her, shall we? Now you can see the funky speaker output board and the diode board.
This particular part of the work is exceptionally difficult to do, because we wedge that damn board between the main board and on top of the filter capacitors. And you can't just get it out. You have to remove the back panel, desolder, move, undo, desolder some more, repeat. I absolutely HATE this design. Stupid and unnecessary.
Worse, you can't skip this step, because often, these caps are bad. Happily in this sample, testing revealed the main filters to be just fine. And that's very good, because there are no good ways I know of to substitute in new parts. Want to see what's going on with that speaker terminal board? Of course you do! Someone has decided that different binding posts would be a good idea.

I even used it without the preamp and it sounds amazing. Some people concerned about the amp running hot on class A but what I found was it not the case. If you are on the market for a amp to power your speakers the M will be more than good enough power and sound quality to do it. Highly recommend. It worked great and was shipped well.

For many, serious is high-end, whether English, American, German or Norwegian. Few people think of Japan as a country where high-end producers are flourishing. But that is only partially true. Japan has a long tradition of exotic amplifiers in particular, and they came from the most unlikely manufacturers. For most people, Yamaha is synonymous with pianos or home theater receivers. What many do not know is that they have a long history of high-end hi-fi, which in its time was no match for American or European high-end hi-fi. When we tested them in , it struck us that Yamaha did not actually make any amplifiers in the same class as the speakers. The otherwise brilliant A-S was the closest you came, but an integrated amplifier for a fraction of the price of the speakers? So when Yamaha released the news of the series, the pieces fell into place. With the C preamp, the M power amplifier, and the GT turntable, Yamaha finally had a serious high-end system.
